Nature of Democracy
Merits of Democracy
•It is an effective form to educate the
public about political, economic and
social affairs.

among the people and prevents the
occurrence of violent revolutions.
•It ensures the people freedom of
speech, conscience, assembly and
action.
•It guarantees liberty and equality, which
are necessary for human development.
•It provides huge personal privilege to
every citizen of the land and stands
against any suppression of thought,
speech or association.
Demerits of Democracy
•It sometimes leads to establish the
majority view over the minority view.
•Party leaders and political power
holders in government control citizens
and party members.
•It does not encourage individuals to
give their opinions.
•It is difficult to prevent corruption and
malpractices.

amateurs and lead to domination of
masses.
•The decision-making process is slow
in democracy as it involves long
debates and deliberations in the
parliament.
Democracy as a form of Government
Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are
elected by the people. One chief factor common to all
democracies is that the government is chosen by the people. It
also helps students to demarcate between democratic and non-
democratic governments.
Democracy is the best form of government due to the following
reasons:
•The rulers of the nation are elected by the public.
•It is a government which is accountable to the people.
•Democracy improves the quality of decision-making.
•Democracy provides a method to deal with differences and
conflicts.
•Democracy enhances the dignity of citizens.
•Democracy is better than other forms of government because it
allows us to correct our own mistakes.
