 The bottom level of the hierarchy

 For example, the word “cat” consists of three
different phonemes made up into the full
word: “kuh,” “aah,” and “tuh.”

 Breaking down words into phonetic units
 An awareness as to how the letters on the
page come together to make sounds and form
words
 Allows for written words to be stored
 Allows for written words to be spoken
Dyslexia
 Individuals have a deficit in this phonological
processing
 Struggle to deconstruct words that are written
into phonemes
 Stops the ability to move up the hierarchy
and gain deeper level comprehension
