Leadership
DEL-MEM
the del-mem leadership advantage
 LEADERSHIP is a driving theme
 Can leadership be “taught?”
 Leadership is cultivated by each individual and
requires time; it is a process
 Leadership is integrated through:
     exercises during face-to-face sessions,
     personal consultations
     monthly leadership meetings,
     select readings, and
     a dedicated workshop in D.C. engaging
      prominent leaders.
Leadership is woven into the course
curriculum, but outside the classroom, a
                       leadership consultant fosters leadership
                            development through reflection and
exposure to a wide variety of
                                   examples, styles, and tools.

He continues to mentor and act as sounding board
to our students long after graduation.
“The [DEL-MEM leadership session in
DC] offered an opportunity to meet and
work intimately with a diverse and
distinguished group of leaders in the field.
I don't know of any other program in the
country that offers such an important
experience.”

Editor's Notes

  1. The Duke Environmental Leadership program was designed to Create an Environmental Vision for Tomorrow. Online and On-campus. In 2003, faculty and staff at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment began to imagine an educational opportunity for working professionals focused on environmental management and leadership development. Out of their work the Duke Environmental Leadership Master of Environmental Management (DEL-MEM) was created. It was designed to address what we thought was a significant gap in opportunities for non-traditional students to continue their education, advance their careers, and become leaders in environmental management.
  2. 3. With generous support provided by the Henry Luce Foundation, and under the leadership of the former dean of the Nicholas School, Norm Christensen, the Duke Environmental Leadership Masters of Environmental Management (DEL-MEM) program was officially launched in 2004,with the first cohort graduating in 2006. The rigorous academic standards of the DEL-MEM program make it unique in the nation–No similar environmental degree program is offered by any other prestigious university in the country.

  5. A sample of the many courses we offerCourse offerings may vary from year to year depending on student interest and faculty availability!
  6. The strength of the DEL-MEM faculty directly feeds into the strength of the DEL-MEM program. We have been fortunate to have a core group of regular-rank, Nicholas School faculty participate in this program since its inception. DEL courses are taught primarily by regular-rank faculty from the Nicholas School, and specialized courses by appropriate faculty from within and outside the School. All primary advising of master’s projects is by Nicholas School faculty.
  7. The place-based components are what makes our DL program unique – opportunities to meet face to face, meet faculty, develop relationships/connections. Connect with the University.
  8. Follow the same academic calendar as Duke University in regards to breaksSynchronous and asynchronous learning: meetings, readings, group projects, memo’s, assignments, discussion boards, monthly leadership callsPlace-based sessionHow many hours per week should you plan on spending on the program? The answer to this varies, but you should consider the following75-90 minutes per course per week synchronous learning (webconference)Asynchronous time spent in the program varies and different students manage it differently. It also depends on the week and what assignments are due. It also depends on your personal and professional life. Some weeks you may not be able to give as much as other weeks (benefit of 2 week module system). You get what you put into it. When current students are asked this question the range varies between 10-20 hours per week.

  10. Through reflection and exposure to leaders and models for leadership, students build environmental leadership capacity that helps them advance in their careers.LEADERSHIP drives the program. As we were designing the program we wondered, can leadership can be taught? Good question. We believe that leadership is cultivated by each individual and requires time and effort; it is a process. Each month there will is a very brief assignment that relates to The New Psychology of Leadership: Identity, Influence and Power.Extract the essence of a part of the book and pose a question about it. I would suggest that you might wish to read a bit more surrounding the essence part, take some time to reflect on the question and then fire away. 11. Outside the classroom, a leadership consultant creates opportunities for reflection and serves as a mentor and sounding board to students even after they graduate.
  12. The hallmark of our program is the dedicated Leadership Module in Washington D.C.. Here, students are provided a point of reference for theirleadership development through individual meetings with prominent leaders. During this session, students are exposed to leaders from all sectors. For example, we have met with:Peter Seligmann, Chairman and CEO of Conservation International Thomas Lovejoy, President of The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the EnvironmentJames Connaughton, former Chairman of the Council on Environmental QualityFran Mainella, Director of the National Park ServiceLarry Selzer, President and CEO of The Conservation FundRichard Newell, Administrator of the Energy Information AdministrationRobert Bonnie, Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Environment and Climate at USDALinda Fisher, Vice Presidentand Chief Sustainability Officer for DuPontLamar Alexander,U.S. Senator of TennesseeTo complete the experience, student groups assumethe role of "leadership coach." Based on their interactions with the leaders they met, students present analysis and advice relative to leadership on a personal level, organizational level, and more broadly to society. This experience is incredibly unique and is raved by students as the pivotal learning experience over the 2 year program.
  13. who are del-mem students? DIVERSE student backgroundsWe are committed to recruiting and admitting a diverse student body.Students are geographically diverse, representing all regions of the US and internationally. Peerto Peer Learning
  14. Students are geographically diverse, representing all regions of the UnitedStates and internationally. Our students have come from 30 states, 4 countries, & 2 US territories! This diversity fuels discussions as different localities bring different environmental pressures and concerns. International students provide alternative lessons and case studies in environmental management and leadership. The DEL-MEM program adapts to time zone issues by recording all webconferences. To get the most out of your education, it is generally expected that students participate in each weekly webconference. Depending on the geographic make-up of the students in the course, faculty may be able to offer multiple meeting sessions. This diversity allows us to integrate real-world experiences, such as managing group projects, into the classroom to further develop management and leadership skills.
  15. Our students are proof of our success. A significant number of DEL-MEM students make substantial leaps in their careers after graduating. Jim Toomey, a syndicated cartoonist, used his cartoon, Sherman’s Lagoon, his Nicholas School connections, and relationships with Ocean Conservancy and NMFS to highlight the issue of shark overfishing and even testified on Capitol Hill regarding shark conservation. He also was part of the Mission Blue/TED voyage to the Galapagos and presented a TED Talk on shark conservation earlier this year.  Now he is partnering with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) todevelop a series of two-minute videos intended to raise awareness of the importance of oceans and the coastal environment. He’s currently using his comic strip to promote marine and ocean conservation; he is currently devoting his comic strips to promoting awareness of Aquarius Reef Base. He has also been working closely with Sylvia Earle (Oceanographer from National Geographic), Céline Cousteau (granddaughter) Marielle Canter entered the program as the Manager for Energy & Mining at Conservation International. Soon after graduation, she was promoted to Senior Manager of Corporate Environmental Leadership Strategies at Conservation International.Michael Stringer – originally with the Cumberland River Compact in KY as a Local Officials Curriculum Coordinator . Currently the Development Director at Southern Oregon Land ConservancyBill Hicks - Senior Water Resources Planner in VA. Upon graduation, became the Engineering and Construction Director in City of Falls Church.Kristin Barker was a Principal Software Engineer at NatureServe. After graduation, she started her own environmental software companyNina Bellucci-Butler was the manager at a recycling firm. Now she’s the director of the business.
