Empathy map and Defining the
problem
Interview with my friend – a lawyer
turned entrepreneur.
Say
• Education is for learning , self discovery, exploration , broadening of horizon…
• Job is for putting your talents, interests and capabilities to good use… Financial security , career
development are also important.
• Education ( degree ) does not prepares you for what you want from job. Life experiences do !...Exposure to
people , places and things. Our current system does not provide enough exposure.
• My degree ( education) prepared me only partly for the job. ( general disposition and skills)
• To get into any new field you require some knowledge , some background.
• I had no idea how the job is going to be. Nobody told me and I didn’t bother to find out. It just came as
the next step…
• Unless someone experiences something first hand, they would never understand it really.
• I would recommend someone to first work in an area that interests them and then perhaps go in for any
training / course unless of course if it’s a technical work.
• Do what you really enjoy /or are passionate about...everything else works it way around.
• My life trajectory has helped me reach the current level of consciousness really fast . The material success
helped me take this difficult decision of leaving it and doing what I am doing. If I had not attained it , I
would have kept running after it.
Law firm experience Handicraft entrepreneurial venture
I liked it for the first few months because it was new. I
was learning new things.
I do like it. There are struggles but I know I am getting
where I want to…
I didn’t know how its going to be… It’s not exactly how I thought it will be…its challenging ,
its monotonous because of the clerical work that it
involves.
The law degree prepared me about 40% for the job The law degree prepared me about 25-30% for this one.
Do
• This was a telephonic conversation so I didn’t get to do direct observation.
• There are unusually long pauses before responding to the questions-
What is the purpose of a job and that of education?
Think and feel
• Professional decisions aren’t a straight line - fixed course thing.
• One must do what one really like to do…for which it is essential that he/she tries it out. That’s the way it
should be ...work for some time …get relevant experience to see if you like what you are doing and then go
in for formal education in that field.
but
• Financial security and material success is important before one sets out for other non –material goals.
• Real life experiences are the best teacheres.
Problem Statement
• Students need a way to experience what they would
want to do in their career at a later stage because
one really doesn't understand what truly
motivates them unless they actually do it .
