The school implemented new programs in math, literacy, and curriculum development. Challenges included raising achievement levels in math and science. Communications with parents improved through new newsletters and websites. Technology infrastructure was upgraded and more training was provided for teachers. New leadership positions were filled and facilities saw many renovations including a new high school construction. Audits were conducted and policies reviewed to ensure financial stability and business operations were running effectively. The school remains committed to providing excellent learning environments to prepare students for an ever changing world.
The document discusses overcoming barriers to accessing advanced science content through online education. It proposes a case-based science curriculum delivered through an online learning platform that allows students in impoverished or rural schools to access real-world scenarios, expert explanations, interactive simulations and immediate feedback through assessments. The platform would facilitate peer discussions and interactions with teachers to reinforce learning, while providing definitions of advanced scientific terms. Teachers would require training to facilitate online learning as constant student engagement is important but not through negative reinforcement.
- Open educational resources (OER) provide financial savings for students by reducing the cost of textbooks and course materials. However, OER may be of lower quality than traditional resources and require additional work from instructors to evaluate and integrate into their courses.
- OER can give instructors access to new, alternative teaching materials and force them to be more creative in their lesson planning compared to relying on pre-existing textbook content. However, this added work burden is a drawback.
- While OER democratizes education by making materials widely accessible, some students may still lack reliable Internet access to take advantage of online OER. Accessibility for disabled students is also a concern.

Making Teaching and Learning Awesome with "Open"David Wiley
This presentation discusses how open educational resources (OER) can leverage the full capabilities of the internet for teaching and learning. OER are freely accessible, irrevocably licensed materials that allow users to retain, reuse, revise, remix and redistribute content. Studies have found OER lead to equivalent or better student outcomes compared to traditional resources at a much lower cost. When instructors remix OER to align with learning objectives or rethink assessment strategies, even greater learning gains can be achieved. Open education infrastructure promotes innovation through reduced costs and broad permissions for experimentation.

Using text-to-speech in exams - practical solutions and pitfalls, UK perspectiveAbi James
Presented by Paul Nisbet and Abi James at the BDAN International Conference, March 2014.
Since 2012 the JCQ Access Arrangements have acknowledged that candidates using a Computer Reader or text-to-speech technology are reading independently making such provision available to candidates in exams that test reading skills for the first time. While use of digital exams with text-to-speech has been widely supported in Scotland through the work of SQA and CALL Scotland for a number of years, the rest of the UK has not had equivalent access. From 2013/14 exam boards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland propose to provide digital versions of exam papers to schools for text-to-speech users. This paper will draw on experiences in Scotland and the work of the BDA New Technology Committee to identify processes and best practices within schools for using these digital papers and to identify the best text-to-speech technology to maximise the benefits for students.
Inclusively enhancing learning from lecture recordings: using Synote without ...Jisc
The government have clarified changes to the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), which mean that universities need to find ways to make teaching and learning more inclusive.
This demonstration will enable participants to experience how Synote has been used at the University of Southampton and other universities to address DSA cut by enhancing a lecture recording through providing an online searchable interactive transcript time synchronised with video, audio and notes.
Automatic machine captioning is affordable compared with professional human captioning and notetaking and can give just as good results when students are provided with the ability to correct any speech recognition errors in the transcript.
The document discusses using an electronic Record of Professional Development (eROPD) with PebblePad instead of a traditional paper-based system. A pilot project was conducted with 10 PGCE students to produce their ROPD electronically. Some benefits found so far include having access anywhere at any time, ability to include different media types as evidence, and no large paper folder to carry. However, it also takes time to set up profiles correctly and training is needed for students on using the technology. Overall the eROPD approach shows potential but still has areas for improvement.
The document summarizes a mobile learning (m-learning) project in Tanzania that aimed to address problems with e-learning accessibility by using mobile phones to provide educational content and facilitate communication. The project provided secondary teacher trainees with mobile phones containing study guides, presentations, videos and quizzes for three courses. While students found the mobile resources useful, project managers struggled to gain full support from course lecturers. For future scaled-up efforts, more involvement of and alternative roles for lecturers are recommended, along with expanding the mobile content. The project demonstrated the potential of m-learning to empower learners through accessible educational materials.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
