Rational functions are functions of the form f(x) = p(x)/q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials. For example, comparing f(x) = 2x/(x^2 - 4) and g(x) = (x+2)/(x-3), f(x) has a vertical asymptote at x=2 while g(x) has vertical asymptotes at x=-2 and x=3. Horizontal asymptotes of rational functions occur when the degree of the numerator is less than the degree of the denominator.
