The Evolving Relation between Star Formation Rates and Stellar Mass
Quantifying the interplay between star formation and stellar mass is a crucial component to understanding the build up of galaxies over cosmic time. There have been many investigations of this relationship, using both observations and simulations, with the aim of shedding light on how it connects with the underlying physical processes governing galaxy evolution.
In this talk I will present recent work where we have examined the star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass (M∗) relation of star-forming galaxies in the XMM-LSS field to z ∼ 3.0 using the near-infrared data from the VISTA Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey. Combining VIDEO with broad-band photometry, we have used the SED fitting algorithm CIGALE to derive SFRs and M∗ and have adapted it to account for the full photometric redshift PDF uncertainty.
We have also compared our results to a range of simulations where I will show that the analytical scaling relation approaches, that invoke an equilibrium model, a good fit to our data. Within a simplified framework, such a model does not include the modelling of e.g. halos, cooling, or galaxy mergers, suggesting that a continual smooth accretion regulated by continual outflows may be a key driver in the overall growth of SFGs.

BDTM is a bio-degradable track mat made from microparticles that absorb diesel fuel, oil, and grease to provide an environmentally-friendly barrier between railroad tracks and ballast. It can be applied by hand and eliminates the need to remove old mats and install new ones. Pilot tests showed that within 3 months, BDTM reduced petroleum levels in ballast by over 90%. BDTM can also be used to absorb oil spills on water and remediate over 90% of absorbed oil within 2 days by stimulating natural bacterial degradation.

The Rewards Report March 2016
This report explores employee rewards in the UK workplace. It finds that two-thirds of employees received some form of reward in 2015, most commonly cash bonuses, overtime pay, and verbal thanks from managers. Younger employees aged 18-24 were least likely to receive rewards. While rewards can motivate engaged employees, they do not boost engagement on their own - employees must be engaged first. Verbal thanks from managers are highly valued rewards across genders and ages. The report concludes rewards are important for motivation but individual engagement of disengaged employees must also be addressed, and non-monetary rewards like thanks can be as or more impactful than cash.

The report finds that there are two separate issues - the measle effect itself, caused by traces of sodium hydroxide under the solder resist that blisters it when exposed to humidity, and dendritic growth on top of resist traces promoted by flux residues and humidity. It concludes the measle effect is due to inadequate cleaning of PCBs before solder resist application, while dendritic growth poses no issues based on field returns analyzed. Recommendations are made to address cleaning procedures.
