WHAT IS DAOISM?
Daoism is a philosophy, a religion, and a way of life that arose in the 6th century BCE in
what is now the eastern Chinese province of Henan. It has strongly influenced the
culture and religious life of China and other East Asian countries ever since.
Daoism, also spelled Taoism, indigenous religio-philosophical tradition that has shaped
Chinese life for more than 2,000 years. In the broadest sense, a Daoist attitude toward life
can be seen in the accepting and yielding, the joyful and carefree sides of the Chinese
character, an attitude that offsets and complements the moral and duty-conscious, austere
and purposeful character ascribed to Confucianism. Daoism is also characterized by a
positive, active attitude toward the occult and the metaphysical (theories on the nature of
reality), whereas the agnostic, pragmatic Confucian tradition considers these issues of
only marginal importance, although the reality of such issues is, by most Confucians, not
denied
What does dao mean?
The term dao predates the rise of Daoism and is used
in all schools of Chinese philosophy, including
Confucianism. Its literal meanings include “way,”
“path,” “road,” “course,” “speech,” and “method,”
among others.
Yin-yang symbol
The most well-known Taoist symbol is the Yin-Yang: a circle
divided into two swirling sections, one black and the other white,
with a smaller circle of the opposite color nestled within each half
Tao Te Ching
Tao Te Ching translates very roughly as "the way of
integrity". In its 81 verses it delivers a treatise on how to
live in the world with goodness and integrity: an
important kind of wisdom in a world where many people
believe such a thing to be impossible.
Gong, Guan
A Chinese daoist temple, generally called Gong, Guan or
Miao in Chinese, is the holy hall where Daoists perform
their religious ceremonies.
Daoism Population
Taoism, also known as Daoism developed around 2000
years ago in China, and today, there are some 12 million
followers of the religion.
WHAT ARE THE BASIC TEACHINGS OF DAOISM?
These 4 Teachings of Daoism Will Help You Navigate Life
1. SIMPLICITY, PATIENCE, COMPASSION
“Simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to
the source of being. Patient with both friends and enemies, you accord with the way things are. Compassionate toward
yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world.”
2. GOING WITH THE FLOW
“When nothing is done, nothing is left undone.”
3. LETTING GO
“If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. If you are
not afraid of dying, there is nothing you cannot achieve.”
4. HARMONY
“Tao engenders One; One engenders Two; Two engenders Three; Three engenders all things. All things
carry the yin (femininity) while embrace the yang (masculinity). Neutralising energy brings them into
harmony.”
WHO IS THE FOUNDER OF DAOISM?
Lao Tzu, also rendered as Laozi and Lao-Tze, was an
ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is the reputed
author of the Tao Te Ching, the founder of philosophical
Taoism, and a deity in religious Taoism and traditional
Chinese religions
QUOTES
Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself
is true power.
Do the difficult things while they are easy and do
the great things while they are small. A journey of
a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is
accomplished.
LAOZI
WHAT ARE THE BELIEFS AND PRACTICES IN DAOISM?
1.They are not allowed to tell lies, steal, commit adultery,
commit murder or drink alcohol.
2.They can eat unprocessed whole grains, fresh
vegetables and very little meat. However, fish and other
seafood should be consumed only once a week
3.Taoism focuses on becoming perfectly aligned with the
natural world in this life, instead of escaping it after death.
4.Daoists believe that suffering ang unhappiness happen when
people are living Against the Dao (the way of nature)
HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS
CHINESE NEW YEAR (Late January or early February according
to the western calendar)
HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL (the dead who have not had a
Proper funeral)
how does daoism differ from confucianism
While Daoism emphasizes belief in nature and dealing with life in
a natural manner, Confucianism is based on human conduct as
opposed to religion and belief in God Focus. Daoism focuses
majorly on nature; Confucianism is focused on improving society.
Daoism is female oriented, rejects institutions, and is
spontaneous. Confucianism is male oriented, likes
institutions and rituals.
