Car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers in the US. Teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are four times more likely to die in a crash than adult drivers aged 25 to 69. Newly licensed teen drivers have the highest risk of fatal crashes in their first six months of driving. In 2008, over 5,800 fatal crashes involved teen drivers, accounting for 12% of all crash fatalities reported to police that year. Males and unbelted drivers comprised a majority of teen fatalities.
