THREE GORGES DAM This dam will become the largest dam in the world after its completion.
XILING GORGE QUTANG GORGE WU GORGE
LOCATION This dam is being build in the China on the YANGZI river. This river is the third largest river in the world. BASIC IDEA First of all the idea of dam on the YANGZI river was given by SUN YAT SEN the father of the modern CHINA In 1919.
BASIC GOALS It will become major source of electricity for china’s growing electrical consumption. It will provide a good restriction in floods in YANGZI river which caused death of 1 million lives in the past 100 years. It will also be a large reservoir of water. Flood control, power generation, improved navigation .
Dam A Hydro Power Station for electricity. Navigation Facilities for trade. It consists of three parts.
This dam was the dream of many Chinese generations. In 1950 after devastating floods in YANGZI river MAO TSETUNG ordered feasibility studies on damming the river. It will be completed in 17 years. Its construction was started in 1993. It will be completed in 2009
CONSTRUCTION 250,000 workers are involved in the project. Amount of concrete used in the project is 26.43 million Cubic meter twice that of ITAIPU project in BRAZIL currently world’s largest dam. After GREAT WALL it is the largest project In CHINA. Three Gorges reservoir will include 632 square Kilometers of land. The ultimate structure
EFFECT ON PEOPLE 1.2 million people will be resettled by this dam. New land is provided to 300,000 farmers. This project will drew 13 big cities and more than 100 towns. 1351 villages will be effected. One of the tragedies of this [project], if just from a regional standpoint, is that the land that is going to be flooded is some of the most fertile in China.
EFFECT ON ENVIRONMENT This project is environment friendly. CHINA burns 50 million tons of coal each year for energy effecting environment due to sulphur and carbon dioxide. This project will reduce the consumption of coal. Although due to this project some species will be disturbed but overall effect of the project on the environment is friendly. Due to large consumption of coal carbon dioxide and sulphur causes acid rains.
CAPACITY This dam consists of 26 hydro power turbines which will produce 18200MW of electricity. This capacity is equal to the output of 18 atomic power plants. After this project CHINA has embraced an energy dinosaur. The reservoir will be 370 miles long and stores 39.3 billion cubic meter of water.
This dam will be 525 feet deep. Head of the dam is 185 meter high. 1.2 mile stretch of concrete. Cost of the project will be $37 billion. Annual power generation will be 84 billion Kilowatt-hours. One third of total cost of dam will be used for the resettlement of people. One ninth of the county’s total power Generated. SPECIFICATIONS
The impact to international trade is indirect. Large amount of machinery is required for dam that is imported. Government has imported 680MW turbo generators and 50 KV high voltage transmission lines. These equipments are expensive and amount of International trade is significant. INTERNATIONAL IMPACT
Three Gorges Project Development Corporation intends to raise a quarter of the total project costs from overseas. EXPORT CREDIT AGENCY SUPPORT FOR THREE GORGES DAM CONTRACTS Brazil, Germany, Canada, Sweden,France,Switzerland
MAJOR OPPONENTS People that are resettled are the main opponent of this project. WORLD WILD LIFE department strictly opposes this project…………..YANGZE Dolphin, Chinese tiger will be demolished. Overseas Chinese Ecological society, friends of earth oppose the project. WORLD BANK also criticizes this project.
A Chinese Journalist Dai Qing She also calls for a halt to construction and supports the idea of a series of smaller, less disruptive construction projects on tributaries of the Yangzi The River Dragon has Come
DISADVANTAGES Environmental damages. Risk of earthquakes and landslides will increase. It will also threaten the riverps wildlife. Project will have a negative impact on Chinese culture. Due to this dam 800 sites of local culture will be submerged. Real cost estimated to be closer to $77 billion
The dam will also destroy scenery and a source of tourism. Will destroy 1300 archeological sites. Will flood many historical sites. Erosion
Pollution from industrial and residential sources to concentrate in the river Silt accumulation. Lose 115,000 acres of arable land.
This dam will play the role of back bone in China’s economy in future. Chinese Government fully supports this project. China’s power output must rise 8% annually to keep pace with 6% annual Increase in gross national product. It Supply mainly power to central China. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?
symbol of their nation's vitality Employment Flood Control Lessen the frequency of large floods from once in 10 years to once in 100 years.
ADVANTAGES Supporters say the benefits of the project outweigh the costs. Dam will relieve the danger of flooding. 10,000-ton ocean-going freighters to sail directly Generated electricity is equal to the 40 million tons of coal. Replace high-sulfur coal (75% of energy supply)
Small dams vs three gorges dam Deep draft vessels can go as far inland as Chongqing Will increase transport by 400% Will provide energy to 60 million residents currently without power.
And So… Will this be a good or bad thing for China? No one knows, the benefits seem to match the pitfalls, and the Chinese have persevered for 5,000 years. Likened to the Great Wall in scope, only time will tell about… The Three Gorges Dam
