The Three Gorges Dam project in China is the world's largest power station in terms of installed capacity. Started in 1994 at a cost of $180 billion, the dam will provide electricity for 350,000 homes when completed in 2009. It uses as much steel as 63 Eiffel Towers and is as wide as the Golden Gate Bridge is long. While the dam will generate clean energy, it has also displaced local residents and flooded large areas of land.
