6. Japanese Course in the UK, August 2019

Japanese culture

7. Language learning – language study
• Waseda Language Centre https://www.waseda.jp/inst/cjl/en/
• There are five 90-minute periods from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday
• Course and subjects will be determined after a Test which students will take
on enrolment to determine their Japanese level.
• Scholars will take 2 to 3 classes a day to make up the required 26 credits a
year from the Waseda Center for Japanese Language
• Scholars will be able to choose different courses related to literature,
philosophy, grammar etc
• Scholars will be able to take classes from other Waseda faculties too
• Scholars need the Foundation’s approval in advance for any absences
(other than health-related)
8. Language learning
• 2 terms a year: These will be 27 September to 26 January in 2018
(followed by a make up week) & 6 April to 26 July in 2019.
• There will also be special classes for Daiwa Scholars in March.
9. Homestay
• One-month with a Japanese family, August to
September 2020
• Opportunity to try new experiences
• Located almost anywhere in Japan

15. Application
• Deadline for the Daiwa Scholarship 2019
programme is Thursday 6 December 2018
• An online application system is available from
the Foundation’s website
• Three confidential references must be submitted
to the Foundation by the deadline
16. Selection process
• STAGE 1
• A number (usually around 25) of candidates will be
invited to a Stage 1 interview in February 2019
• STAGE 2
• Those who pass Stage 1 will sit a language aptitude
test and attend a lunch in mid-February 2019
• STAGE 3
• The final shortlist of candidates will be interviewed by
the Trustees on 14 March 2019 (tbc)
17. Selection process
• All interviews take place at Daiwa Foundation
Japan House in London
• All candidates will be notified of the Foundation’s
decision by letter
• The selected candidates will have a residential
Japanese language course in the UK in summer
2019
• The selected candidates will depart for Japan in
September 2019
18. Emoluments
• Tuition - all tuition and examination fees throughout the
Scholarship
• Maintenance grant - for the duration of the Scholarship to
cover accommodation and living costs for a single person
(¥260,000 per month – rent is usually (¥80,000 per month )
• Travel - economy-class travel to and from Japan at the
beginning and end of the Scholarship
• Accommodation - hotel accommodation in central Tokyo for
the first weeks in Japan; then, rented apartments
• Insurance - standard private medical insurance while Daiwa
Scholars are in Japan on the programme, complementing
the Japanese National Health Insurance system
19. Daiwa Foundation Japanese Studies Scholarships
• NEW from April 2015
• Only open to UK nationals who have a degree in Japanese Studies,
comprising a significant amount of Japanese language study
• We aim to support up to three British nationals in Japan and up to three
in the UK who are doing postgraduate studies in Japan-related studies
• Benefits:
• Tuition covered (for duration of course)
• Stipend of £1,000 a month while in the UK and ¥260,000 per month
while in Japan
• Annual UK-Japan air fare paid
• Deadline: last Thursday in January (24 January in 2019)
