• Unique 20-month programme for UK citizens
aged 21-35 (19 months in Japan)

7. Language learning in Tokyo
Three strands:
• Japanese language study
• Communication classes
• Help with Japanese Language Proficiency Test
preparation – Scholars are encouraged to take
Level 2 (second highest level)
8. Language learning – Japanese language study
• Intensive classes at a language school in Tokyo
(3.5 hours per day) for 12 months
• Weekly communication classes from January 2019
will run in parallel, focusing on skills required for a
productive work placement and exploring Japanese
language in a less formal environment
9. Homestay
• One-month with a Japanese family, September 2019
• Opportunity to try new experiences
• Located almost anywhere in Japan

21. Application
• Deadline for the Daiwa Scholarship 2018
programme is Thursday 7 December 2017
• An online application system is available from
the Foundation’s website
• Three confidential references must be submitted
to the Foundation by the deadline
22. Selection process
• STAGE 1
• A number (usually 24) of candidates will be invited to a
Stage 1 interview from 12-15 February 2018
• STAGE 2
• Those who pass Stage 1 will sit a language aptitude test
and attend a lunch on Wednesday, 21 February 2018
• STAGE 3
• The final shortlist of candidates will be interviewed by
the Trustees in mid to late March 2018
23. Emoluments
• Tuition - all tuition and examination fees throughout the
Scholarship
• Maintenance grant - for the duration of the Scholarship to
cover accommodation and living costs for a single person
(¥260,000 per month – rent is usually (¥80,000 per month )
• Travel - economy-class travel to and from Japan at the
beginning and end of the Scholarship
• Accommodation - hotel accommodation in central Tokyo for
the first weeks in Japan; then, rented apartments
• Insurance - standard private medical insurance while Daiwa
Scholars are in Japan on the programme, complementing
the Japanese National Health Insurance system
24. Daiwa Foundation Japanese Studies Scholarships
• NEW from April 2015
• Only open to UK nationals who have a degree in Japanese Studies,
comprising a significant amount of Japanese language study
• We aim to support up to three British nationals in Japan and up to three
in the UK who are doing postgraduate studies in Japan-related studies
• Benefits:
• Tuition covered (for duration of course)
• Stipend of £1,000 a month while in the UK and ¥260,000 per month
while in Japan
• Annual UK-Japan air fare paid
• Deadline: last Thursday in January (25 January in 2018)
