This document provides an introductory guide for participants in the Sakura Science High School Program (SSHP) run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Dear all SSHP participants,
JST would like to extend our warm welcome to all Sakura Science High School Program (SSHP)
participants. The SSHP program has been designed to meet your science and technology
curiosity and to help broaden your science and technology horizon. All of the participants are
encouraged to take full advantages of this opportunity by exposing yourself to science and
technology in Japan with other Asian/Pacific students. JST hopes that all of the participants
return home safely with new experiences, good memories and new friendships gained in Japan.

I SAKURA Science Program (SSP)
I.1 What is SAKURA Science Program (SSP)
The Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (Sakura
Science Program: SSP) is a short-term invitational program
launched by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) targeted at Asian youth in 2014. The
program aims at promoting innovation in Asia by deepening Asian participants’ knowledge in
R&D and through active exchange of ideas and opinions under a multi-lateral environment. The
program sets its goal of nurturing young aspiring scientists in Asia.
SSP has two major programs, one, call for proposal type program, the other, SSHP, a program
specifically targeted at excellent Asian/ Pacific high school students.
I.2 What is JST
Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), a major Japanese funding agency, works
vigorously for the implementation of science and technology policy in Japan with a clear mission
of the creation of innovation in close cooperation with the Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT).
JST is also engaged to provide a sound infrastructure of science and
technology information, to raise awareness and understanding of science
and technology-related issues in Japan in addition to the promotion of
various kinds of international cooperation and exchange including SSP.

I.3 For Active Participation of SSHP
The exchange program, designed and brought to you by JST, has been made available thanks to
cooperation and assistance from many Japanese organizations and the attentive /diligent
people.
The program offers a variety of science & technology related experiences including visits to
universities and top-notch research institutes as well as a hands-on chemistry experiment and
interaction with high school and university students.
JST expects you to take advantage of your opportunities to visit Japan with positive attitude,
sharpened interest in S&T and good pre-tour preparation.

II Important Information for SSHP Participants
II.1 Safety in Japan
[General]
During the SSP program, participants are required to follow the instructions of JST and JICE
(Japan International Cooperation Center, a contracted operator of the program), to stay in good
health and safe. For details, please refer to Attachment 1 “Safety Instructions for SSHP
Participants”.
[For hands-on chemistry experiment class]
If you have an occasion to attend a chemistry experiment class under the guidance of Prof.
Shirakawa, a Japanese Nobel laureate in chemistry, please refer to Attachment 2 “Lab Safety
Rules for SSHP Participants”.

II.4 Preparations before Departure
A) Currency & Tipping
- The Japanese currency is Yen (en).

- Foreign currencies including US Dollar are not accepted. You are advised to exchange
your country’s currency to Japanese Yen at the international airports.
- All major international credit cards are accepted in Japan.
- No tips are needed in Japan.

II.5 Internet Connection/ International Calls
All of the participants will have an internet access through Wi-Fi routers provided by JST to
your supervisors during the program.
International calls can be made with software (e.g. Skype or Google Hangouts) via the
internet.
II.6 Language
The working language is English in this program.
All materials are prepared in English.
Consecutive interpretation into English is provided when necessary.

Upon arrival at the International Airport in Tokyo, please proceed to the immigration, and then
pick up your luggage.
＊In case of Missing/ Damaged Baggage
Please report immediately your lost or damaged checked-in baggage to the airport staff before
leaving the airport for airline insurance.
C) Meeting point
Upon your arrival at the international airport in Japan, a
travel agency staff will greet you at a meeting point in the
arrival lobby on the maps below after the customs with a
signboard shown on the right.

Please keep in mind that the program is subject to change without prior notice. To keep yourself
updated about the latest program schedule through your supervisor. If not sure please contact a
JICE staff/coordinator assigned to your group.
B) Meal request
JST respects the participants’ specific dietary requirements due to medical or religious reasons.
Please note that all of the requests cannot be met.
C) Use of personal information
JST uses personal information of the participant for the official documents and for
communication purposes. JST also uses any videos, photographs, compositions, surveys, etc.
of/by the participant for promotional purposes of SSP / SSHP and JST.

Safety Instructions for SSHP Participants
Role of Supervisors
PLEASE PLACE YOUR FIRST PRIORITY ON THE SAFETY OF THE STUDENTS.
A) Students under Your Supervision
Each supervisor is requested to take care of a group of five (5) high school students. Please
make necessary arrangements among supervisors in advance or upon arrival to assign five
(5) students to your group especially when you are not affiliated with any high school.
B) Safety and Health Management for Participating Students
Supervisors are demanded to perform the following tasks to take good care of each
participating student’s safety and health during the program.
Perform the roll call of your group of students before your group will move to a new location
or to board the bus.
Read this leaflet carefully, and carry it with you during the program to obtain the contact
numbers in case of emergency and other important information.
Keep good cooperation with JST and other operational staff to keep updated with the latest
information for any small changes in itinerary and agenda during the program.
When necessary, ask your students about any food allergies or food restrictions in advance.
C) Emergency
When any participant encounters an emergency such as sickness, injury, accident, natural
disaster or fire during their stay in Japan, you would be the person who first receives a call
from them. When you receive an emergency call, please ask JST members or a coordinator
for further instructions. JST decides whether to call #110 for the Police or #119 for an
ambulance in cases of emergency or not.

For Supervisors & Students
A) Participants’ ID Cards and neck straps
ID Cards and neck straps for SSP participants are provided upon arrival in Japan.
Participants must wear the card during the program. There is the information on emergency
numbers printed on its back, so please refer to it when necessary.

B) Travel Insurance:
All participants are insured under an overseas travel insurance
policy by Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Co., Ltd.
You are requested to put your signature on “Declaration &
Authorization” upon arrival in Japan.
The insurance covers the following items with the insured amount in brackets (In Japanese
Yen)
 Injury Death (10 Million) (Fixed)
 Injury Residual Disability (Up to 10 Million)
 Sickness Death Benefit Endorsement (10 Million) (Fixed)

C) Extended Stay due to Passport loss
The cost of extended stay beyond the predetermined program dates due to loss of passport
will not be covered by the SSHP travel insurance. The bearer of the missing passport is
responsible for an additional accommodation fee among others. A responsible supervisor is
requested to stay over with he/her on his/her account when the bearer of the missing
passport is a minor.

Lab Safety Rules for SSP Participants
A) [General Instructions]
1.No private talk
2.No photo and smartphone
3.Don’t touch the equipment and the tools without instructions
4.Be all eyes and ears for any instructions by Dr. Shirakawa
5.Ask a laboratory assistant nearby when not sure or for the next move.
B) [Clothing]
Wear a long-sleeved white lab coat provided by JST to protect your body from corrosive
chemicals.
C) [Hair & Accessories]
All accessories or ties should be removed or secured.
Long hair is at risk to be burnt or caught up in a machine, so such hair must be tied back.
D) [Protective Gear]
Safety glasses, white coats and gloves are provided in the lab to protect your eyes and hands.
Bring along suitable footwear such as sneakers that cover your toes completely to protect your
feet. Sandals are not allowed in the lab.

Seasons in Japan
[Spring] March~ May
Climate：
It is generally pretty warm in spring in Tokyo. The temperature
is moderate. There is not much rainfall. But difference in the
temperature in the day time may be wide, depending on when
you stay in spring. Cherry blossoms open at the end of March
and they ae full open usually in the first week of April. They may scatter away in the wind after
that.
[Summer] June ~ August
Climate:
After rainy season from June to July when almost every day
there is rainfall, it becomes very hot with high humidity in
Tokyo. The temperature even stands at 30 ℃ or higher.
Usually a life indoor and circumstances at public places are
comfortable because they are well air-conditioned. But to
bring a fan and cold beverage like a bottle of water with you
are recommended. Please try and avoid the direct sunshine to
prevent heatstroke.
[Autumn/Fall] September~ November
Climate:
After the typhoon season that may come ashore in September is over,
the pleasant temperature and brilliant blue skies of autumn/fall
make this time of year ideal. The breeze is nice to you. It is especially
beautiful in the middle/end of November when the leaves change color and turn into red and
yellow everywhere. Siberian high pressure systems bring cold westerly winds as a sign of coming
winter.
[Winter] December~ February
Climate:
Winter in Tokyo generally brings clear and crisp skies. The
temperatures are cool and sometimes can dip to freezing at night. It
is quite dry and sunny and it does not snow very often in Tokyo. Just
in case you have snowfall and snow pile, you have to be careful about
slippery road. The public spaces and offices are comfortable and warm.
