Most people during the Middle Ages lived in the country and worked as farmers for local lords. Peasants grew crops and had small gardens and livestock. City life was crowded and dirty, with many working as craftsmen in guilds. Most homes were small, one or two room structures that were dark and smoky. Peasants wore plain wool clothing while the wealthy wore finer materials. Peasants mostly ate bread and stew with meat saved for special occasions due to lack of refrigeration. Education was limited with most learning trades, while some wealthy children were tutored or apprenticed.
