Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. 1) Get organized
In middle school, it’s easy to get away with disorganization. In high school, with six
different classes all over the campus, strange new schedules, and a bunch of
people you’ve never met before, organization is key to staying sane! Buy sticky
notes, a few three-ring binders with dividers, notebooks,
highlighters…whatever it takes to keep you on track! Also, those calendar
organizers (or reminder binders, as my school calls them) that are given out at the
beginning of the school year are more crucial than they appear. You can write down
all your homework and assignments in them, and they’ll be a life-saver to you for
the rest of high school…so make sure to use them!
3. 2) Participate in the club community
Find a club that interests you, and join one. Clubs are awesome in that
you can meet with people who enjoy similar things that you do, make a
whole bunch of new friends, and participate in lots of cool activities. If
you’re very involved with a certain club, this could also be great for college
apps (in the very far-off future!).
4. Alternatively, you can also start a club! You can invite friends
to join and meet new people through recruitment. It’s a great
way to really get involved in your high school. Also, being a
club president for all four years of high school is a great way
to show colleges your commitment and drive.
5. 3) Take appropriate and challenging classes
This might seem intimidating, but seriously: take the leap! Taking challenging
honors or AP classes is a great way to grow mentally and improve your GPA. If
you are not ready for these classes, take others that can help you build skills you
need.Teachers definitely demand a lot more in high school, and this is going to
sound cheesy…but if you believe you can do it, and you work hard at it, those
classes are perfectly doable. YOU ARE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE!
7. 5)Know what you believe in, and prioritize that
above all else.
High school will make you question some of your smallest values, and whether or
not you choose to stick to your beliefs is up to you. But in a place where you will be
extremely independent, you have to stand up for yourself. Don't make
decisions that don't accurately reflect who you are in terms of morals
just because you want to appeal to other people. Be smart! You have your
morals and priorities for a reason, so now is the time to enforce them on yourself.
8. 6) Know where your classes are located without needing a schedule.
The big switch from middle to high school was easier for me than moving from
elementary to middle school, and one of the biggest reasons why is because I knew
that memorizing the locations of my classes beforehand was extremely important.
One of the biggest things that bugged me about starting high school was
wondering whether or not I would successfully be able to locate each of my
classrooms in the five minute breaks given in between classes. Prepare for that
properly by looking at a map of your school and then figuring out the best
routes to each class from the previous one.
9. 7)Befriend upperclassmen
They really aren’t that scary in reality! When you first enter high school,
everyone will look so intimidating—especially the juniors and seniors. I
remember entering high school, seeing someone with a fully grown beard,
and freaking out. Friendships with upperclassmen, however, are some of the
most rewarding friendships high school has to offer. Upperclassmen are
almost done with high school. They’ve taken the classes you’re going to
take and have countless pieces of advice to offer. They’re also great tutors
and can show you around campus if you’re lost—don’t miss out! Snag one
while you can. Inside that hormonal, sleep-deprived shell is an actual human
being.
10. 8) Attend School Events
It might seem daunting to go to high school events, but
really—do it! Football games, dances, movie nights,
fundraisers, etc. are great ways to meet new people, get
to know your school better, and have a lot of fun. I know
lots of people who dearly regret not getting involved
during freshman year because they thought school
activities were lame or because they were too scared to
try them out. Freshman year is the year where you’ll have
the most free time, so make use of it!
11. 9) Get to know who your counselor is.
This person will help you with many of the concerns you may
have. You can always ask him or her for help because they are
there to help you. If you can't get help from a teacher or parent
about a problem, going to your counselor is a good idea because
they are meant to help high schoolers. Getting to know them
allows them to become familiar with you and know who you
are, too.
