Wapda and World Bank
M/s Nippon Koei, and Dollsar in association with Development Management Consultant, National Development consultant
and Pakistan Engineering Consultant were appointed as client representative for the Design and Construction Supervision
of Dasu Hydropower Project on Indus River at Dasu in Kohistan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. The proposed
Dasu reservoir will extend to a length of about 74km.In the feasibility studies it was assessed that new reservoir will
submerge a 65km stretch of the existing Karakoram Highway (KKH) on left bank of river and 75 km of different access
roads on right bank will be submerged in Dasu reservoir, This will require relocation of existing road on higher levels.
In this context the under mentioned works were undertaken.
The alignment of KKH (65km) at high altitude 975 to 1060m, finalization on topo survey maps of Survey of
Pakistan (SOP), and detailed survey in a corridor of 80 m width carried out.
9 km access road for residential colony at an altitude of 220m higher from existing KKH was aligned.
On right bank of Indus river, alignment of road from Komila town to Dam site(12km),Dam Site to Largani
(9km),Largani to Kandia (14km) and Kandia to Uttar Gah (17.8km), was conducted.
Activities performed:
The project encompasses different rural and urban roads, with variable width of 6m to 11m depending upon the terrain
which is flat, rolling as well as mountainous. I was responsible for pavement and geometric designing of above mentioned
road and performed the following activities:
Prepared the typical cross section and Geometric design parameters
Supervised the survey activities by deputing the team of junior engineers and advised on the necessary
amendments in survey.
Conducted investigation and recorded observations, highlighted necessary discrepancies in survey and
incorporated amendments as per ground reality with the help of site surveyors.
Prepared the typical cross section and Geometric design parameters.
Prepared the surface models including triangulation and contouring (one meter minor contour interval and 5
meter major contour interval).
Designed the preliminary horizontal alignment by keeping in view AASHTO design parameters (Design
Speed, Minimum radius, Minimum curve length, and Horizontal sight distance), Geological and geotechnical
information.
Designed the preliminary vertical alignment by keeping in view AASHTO design parameters (Minimum curve
length, K value on Sag and Hog Curve, Stopping sight distance, Maximum grade and Maximum Grade Length),
Hydraulics and Hydrology data, pavement design and maximum reservoir level.
Prepared the earthwork cross section on every 10 m intervals and to avoid high retaining structures, excessive
cut and fill, the levels and location of most feasible points were noted on every 10m interval.
Readjusted the horizontal and vertical alignment on the basis of noted levels and locations on every 10 meter
intervals to make the design economical and viable for construction.
Designed the super-elevation (tangent run out and runoff length) on every curve according to design speed
and maximum super-elevation limit (6.0%).
Designed the toe line and embankment slopes on entire length of roads according to geotechnical and
geological report and then prepared earthwork cross for the cut and fill quantity.
Marked the drainage structures on plan and profile. Height and length of retaining structures were observed
and marked on plan.
Managed the drafting section in preparation of plan, profile and general drawings required for construction.
Reviewed design and drafting works completed by junior colleagues for compliance with original design intent.
Prepared the specification of different items used in road construction and then calculated the bill of quantity
for different items by using the technical specification manual.
Advised and supported the Project Manager and the QA/QA Engineers on any technical design issues arising
from the projects.

Key Project – Gardendewal-Chagcharan Project Afghanistan. The project encompassed a 366km of road, with
variable width of 9m to 11m depending upon the terrain which was flat, rolling as well as mountainous. The assignment
included the detail design road network which comprised major roads and At-grade signalized junctions. The project
aimed at reduction of overall travel time and provision of comfort and high level of service to road users as well as
increase in the land value of the project area.
Activities performed:
Supervised the team of surveyors to carry out a detailed inventory survey of the road and detail topo graphic survey in
order to obtain information on alignment / width and condition of the road as well as to examine and report on the
condition of existing structures.
The assignment comprised extensive and intensive field and desk study. Major steps followed included:
Used x,y,z coordinate data in Excel format in design software to generate 3-dimensional digital terrain (DTM)
model, on which the final design was based .Used this data to prepare the horizontal and vertical profile of the road
from which substandard horizontal and vertical locations were identified. Marked different locations where
realignment was required and additional survey works were implemented to enable sufficient data to be collected for
the detailed drawings. Designed road alignment for the Section 0 – 100km, generally following the existing
alignment and incorporating “minor” horizontal alignment corrections to eliminate poor standard curves or steep
vertical gradients and ensured that it will be across cleared agricultural land.
At some locations, avoided an extremely steep gradient and substandard curve section (15-20% grade and
curve 15m radius. This realignment was across lightly grassed soil covered hills. The soil was weak and unsuitable
for agriculture.
Proposed the alignment above the minimum requirements of the Afghanistan Interim Standard, Making of
significant deviations from the existing alignment in some locations. It was observed that by following the existing
alignment, it was not possible to provide the minimum radii criteria set out in the design standards
After fixing the line of direction and design parameters, I designed the preliminary horizontal alignment by
keeping in view The Afghan Standards (Design Speed, Minimum radius, Minimum curve length, and Horizontal sight
distance) as well as Geological and Geotechnical study. After completing the preliminary design of horizontal
alignment, I designed the preliminary vertical alignment by keeping in view Afghan standards for vertical design
parameters (Minimum curve length value on Sag and Hog Curve, Stopping sight distance, Maximum grade and
Maximum Grade Length), Hydraulics and Hydrology data, pavement design.
In order to prepare the earthwork cross section, the level and location of most feasible point was noted on
sections of every 20m interval to avoid high retaining structures and excessive cut and fill.
I redesigned the horizontal and vertical alignment on the basis of noted levels and locations on every 10 meter
intervals to make the design economical and viable for construction then I designed the super-elevation (tangent run
out and runoff length) on every curve according to design speed and maximum super-elevation limit (6.0%).After
computing the super-elevation on every desired curve ,I provided the widening to facilitate the tracking of larger
vehicles ensuring that there was enough width for two design vehicles to pass each other on a sharp curve without
colliding.
While applying different cut slopes on different materials as in above mentioned table, prepared earthwork
cross section for the cut and fill quantity. Subsequently introduced the drafting section in preparation of plan, profile,
general drawings, and general detailing on plan and profile drawings required for construction.
After completing the Geometric design, I managed the plan for road marking in accordance with Afghanistan
Interim Standard. Where available information was not enough.
Established the location of no-overtaking lines based on the MUTCD method.

towards facilitating the social, economic and industrial development of the southwest zone, which encompasses
Bangladesh’s second major port, its third main city and an important inland port.
Activities performed:
I designed the preliminary horizontal alignment of the main 7km bridge, 62km approach road by keeping in view
Bangladesh Bridge and geometric Standards. After completing the preliminary design of horizontal alignment merits and
demerits of alignment were discussed with Structure Engineer, River training, environmentalist and Social Experts
.Necessary amendments were made in the design to render it most economical, viable and safe design. Infact all
endeavors were made to render the design most practicable and perfect.
Final vertical profile of selected route was designed by keeping in view Bangladesh standards for vertical design(Minimum
curve length ,K value on Sag and Hog Curve, Stopping sight distance, Maximum grade and Maximum Grade Length),
highest flood level of river and cross drainage structures of approach road.
One of the notable challenges posed at the commencement of the project was time limitation. The entire designing
including the collection of vital data from primary/secondary sources, data analysis, field studies, and consultation with
experts of related fields, culinary to submission of final report was desired to be completed in a span of 9 month. However,
by chalking out a workable schedule, due planning of design activities, including site visits, meeting/discussion with stake
holders, geometric designing, preparation of design drawings and finalization of design report, was accomplished
successfully before time, which earned me due appreciation from the Project Manager. It was noted by the Project
Manager that quality of work conformed to the internationally recognized quality, to the satisfaction of Bangladesh
Government and donor authority.

Key Project – West Seti Hydropower Project; funded by World Bank. 74 Km hilly areas approach road to Seti
hydropower project involved high expertise in designing. Design review of different access roads from urban areas to Dam
Axis.
Activities performed: Detailed design of the road was carried out by another local consultant and the task which was
given to me, to review the design with all respects. Though the magnitude and scope of work was not that big yet it was a
challenge that to minimize the cost by reducing cut and fill quantities as well as to check the design from safety and
economical point of view. Initially a site visit along with senior experts was undertaken and various discrepancies in design
as per site were observed for further amendments to render the design more safe and economical. Design of the alternate
route on different locations was prepared and cost worked out. It followed marking of critical points on vertical alignment
and preparation of different options to minimize the cut and fill. A comparison with previous design revealed that most of
the locations were more economical and safe within the AASHTO 2004 geometric design parameters.
