Apps as Machines — ThingsCon Berlin 2014Martin Jordan
What if your favourite apps turned into little machines? What makes physical objects more emotionally engaging than apps? How do we connect to them through our natural senses and cognitive abilities?
Together we'll break down some of our favourite apps to their elementals and imagine them as physical machines. We'll examine aspects of experience which can bring us closer to the services we use everyday.
How? With a few short hands-on exercises, we'll explore the jobs-to-be-done behind popular apps. Quick prototypes and scenarios of how these might exist as machines will try to uncover what we're after.
The ‘Apps as Machines’ workshop was held during ThingsCon in May 2014 in Berlin — by Boris Anthony, Hannes Jentsch and Martin Jordan
Built With ❤ - Why Developer Experience Matters - DevOps Days Boston 2019Arthur Maltson
One evening you’re browsing Twitter and you stumble on a really cool new Open Source tool. The README is intuitive, the installation is seamless and you’re up and running in no time. When using the tool, error messages are clear and how to fix the issues obvious. Before you know it, you’ve achieved what you wanted and you feel like a superstar! But the experience is very different the next day at work. You just spent a couple weeks fiddling to get a project running locally but now you have to jump through hoops to get the application built and deployed with that dreadful internal tool. Why can’t our day time experiences look like our weekend passion projects? It can!
In this session you’ll be introduced to the concept of Developer Experience and why it matters. You’ll then embark on a journey to build a new tool with Developer Experience as a core focus. You’ll learn how certain targeted approaches can improve the Developer Experience through the entire Experience Lifecycle. At the end of the talk you will be equipped with ways to improve the Developer Experience in your work; whether you’re building tools for developers, collaborating with other developers on a business project, or just building a side project one your own.
This is the version of the presentation given at DevOps Days 2019.
When you're starting or running a company, how do you choose technology? The prevailing advice du jour is something along the lines of "use the best tool for the job." This is obviously right, but it is also devoid of meaning in an unfortunate way that lets people define "best" and "job" as myopically as they like.
Your boss has an iPhone, so of course he wants an app. But does an app really make business sense? Or is a responsive design website enough?
And with hundreds of thousands of apps out there, what will make people choose and use yours? What makes a good mobile user interface? And how can you make sure your company actually delivers one?
Responsive design might make sense if you've got a content driven website. But how should your web team work together when every web page they are making needs to work at any width and resolution? And can you get the content under control to make pages that really make sense on small screens and big ones?
The term "Minimal Viable Product" has become so widely used that is seems to have lost its meaning. There is growing confusion whether the MVP is a "pre-launch" version of an online or mobile produce, or an "alpha" or "beta".
Creating the MVP is an excellent way of establishing whether a business idea is likely to fly in the real world. But, all too often I see people getting tanged up in the technicalities of what the MVP should include. And, when that happens, the purpose that the MVP should serve becomes forgotten or lost.
This presentation shows you how a logical process of creating two MVPs in quick succession will help anyone that is creating a web or mobile product to spend less time and money on creating a sustainable business by minimising the risk of "getting it wrong".
The advice applies to anyone, no matter how big or small the budget. And I can wholeheartedly testify that people who have applied this precise process have:
1. Saved hundreds of hours of efforts which would have taken them in the wrong direction,
2. Helped businesses that had built a product but found uptake lacklustre to reposition their offering to attract a much higher rate of customer acquisition and retention.
Enjoy :)

The Making of Melody Jams (CAMPFest 2017)Jamie Kosoy
In late 2015, Jamie received an email from a friend of a friend with an idea for a kid’s game. They were thousands of miles apart, had never met and had never built an app before. Just six months later they released Melody Jams, which went on to top the App Store charts in 130 countries with more than 500,000 downloads worldwide. It also received a Communication Arts 2017 Award of Excellence.
Melody Jams is an allegory for the creative process. In essence, it’s a game teaching kids about empathy; to show how pieces can be more than the sum of their parts. In this talk, Jamie will lift the curtain on how that applies to design and technology: building culture on new teams, learning new languages and processes quickly, the value of prototyping and the eccentricities of the world of apps.
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to deliver a talk at Shift in Split, Croatia.
Shift is a developer conference, so initially, I thought it would be entertaining to talk about what it’s like to work with an engineer, from a designers perspective. The working title of the talk was Things Engineers Hate About Working With (Me) a Designer.
I was going to share the mistakes I’ve made, and learned from, along the way. A manifesto of what not to do when working with an engineer. However, feedback included phrases like “it’s a bit tongue & cheek” and the best talks are ones that are “raw, honest and vulnerable.”
You don’t write code, but you’ve been successful in spite of it. The lines are blurring between design & engineering. Why not talk about how tools have helped bridge that gap?
There was something more interesting to talk about. I realized that I didn’t write code because I didn’t need to. For years I’d been spoiled, and to some extent enabled, by a handful of incredibly talented iOS engineers. The realization didn’t sit well with me.
I scrapped everything and went back to the drawing board.
Tools were my first introduction to a hobby that turned into a passion that has become an obsession
They have been steadily influencing and shaping me as a designer from the first time I sat in front of a computer in elementary school. I would not realize how much they’d impact my life until much much later.
Tools have had a massive influence on me and my work, but had they on others?

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

26. A.I. IS A SUBJECTIVE “RESULT”
● Machine learning allows us to create software with
more complex logic
● This “smarter” software can produce results that
mimic human intelligence
But we don’t really understand what human
intelligence is...so what delineates tasks that require
intelligence from tasks that don’t?
27. Artificial flowers have the same
relationship to natural flowers
as
artificial intelligence has to
natural intelligence.
Useful, but not the same.
AND LET’S BE
CLEAR...
28. Movies are just entertainment.
AND OF COURSE...

29. CODE TRYING TO BE CLEVER
A.I. is the result of “smart” software developed through
machine learning.
And since we don’t fully understand our only point of
reference — natural (human) intelligence — all we can
do is subjectively mimic intelligence.

31. A.I. removes friction.
It’s software that can interact and adapt — on the fly.
And by removing friction, A.I. gives us:
● Quicker adoption,
● Greater accuracy, and
● Faster speed
Which ultimately translates into more productivity.
AT THE VERY CORE...
32. AND IT’S ALL UP FOR GRABS
Everything mankind has ever invented — including all
software apps — will be reinvented using A.I.
A.I. will make everything frictionless
and more productive.
And it will do it completely behind-the-scenes...
33. ON A PATH TO UBIQUITY
“The most profound technologies are those that
disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of
everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.”
~Mark Weiser
Scientific American, 1991
34. CHANGING EVERYTHING
Can you think of anything that doesn’t have a
software element to it today?
Everything that is software today — or will be in the
future — will get the “A.I.-powered” treatment.
Remember, Software is Eating the World…?
And today, A.I. is eating the software.

36. EMPOWERING OUR WORLD
A.I. is the bridge between our world
and the computer world.
A bridge that understands how both sides work
— and translates between them.
And brings out the best in both.
37. “In 2018, half a billion users will save two hours a day as
a result of AI-powered tools.”
~ Gartner, 2017
38. THE A.I. REBOOT
A.I. is a tool for augmentation, not replacement.
Augment your staff
A.I. can empower your staff to be (exponentially) more
productive:
● To work faster, and
● To work more accurately
Augment your customers
A.I. can make it easier for your customers to adopt, use, and
support your products.
(e.g. Alexa)
Stick around for examples
39. A.I. can reduce friction in nearly any business process.
But stay focused on small, precise tasks.
General A.I. Narrow A.I.
‘Replace’ mindset ‘Augment’ mindset
THINK BIG, BUILD SMALL
40. “Anything that a typical human can do
with 1 second of thought, we can probably
now or soon automate with A.I.”
~ Andrew Ng
Former lead of Google Brain project

47. IN SHORT...
You don't need to know A.I. to use it.

Who uses software?
Who knows how to write software?

50. Just add skills…
Most implementations do not require a new team,
All you need are some new skills.
AND HOLD OFF ON NEW TEAMS
51. ● Right technical expertise to cut through the hype
of new offerings, and
● Right business acumen to know where to best
apply those technologies.
WHAT SKILLS DO YOU REALLY
NEED?
( Sound familiar? )
