Sociological Concept in The Help
Summary:
The Help is written by Tate Taylor in 2011 which is adapted from Kathryn Stockett s novel. This film
mainly talked about three women in Mississippi during 1960s : Aibileen Clark who is a black maid
and works for Elizabeth family, Minny Jackson who is the brusque and outspoken maid, and Skeeter
Phelan who decides to write the book about the help . In overall, The Help presents how African
American maids in the South viewed their employers during Jim Crow days.
First, Skeeter is a southern society girl, who already graduated from a college, comes home and finds
that she doesn t easily fit in that society. She has never had a boyfriend despite wanting romance in her
life, primarily concentrate for writing career, either as a serious journalist. Skeeter starts to think about
writing book to change attitudes about race in Jackson Mississippi, which is also the chance from a
New York s editor to develop her career. She purposed to know about the works of a black maid in
Mississippi. Aibileen is the first woman who agrees to work with Skeeter. Aibileen works hard for
Elizabeth family in Jackson. After realizing that Skeeter needs more maids stories to finish the book,

The maids had to work under white dominance to support their family, raise their children and pay
rent and many other expenses. Therefore, they basically have to play the role which socioeconomics
forced on them. However, their sacrifice also viewed how beautiful and strong they were .Therefore,
for the women in The Help the struggles are obvious. Aibileen had denied joining in Skeeter s book
until she saw Mindy her best friend was abused. Either, Mindy would never ever fight if she had not

What Are Emerson s Views On Individualism
Emerson begins his major work on individualism by declaring the importance of thinking for oneself
instead of humbly acquiring someone else s belief. Emerson says, To believe that what is true in your
private heart is true for all men that is genius . The one who scorns personal intuition and, instead,
chooses to admit others opinions lacks the inventive power necessary for strong, fearless
individualism. Emerson says, Trust thyself, a saying that ties along this initial section of the essay.
This simply resembles to believe others judgments is poor spirited, with no inspiration or hope. An
individual with dignity, exhibits originality and is childish unspoiled by egoistic desires but mature.
Emerson currently focuses his attention ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Religion s main drawback is its worry of individual creativeness. Emerson s criticism of society, and
particularly its misguided notion of progress, differs from his earlier comments on the topic. He
debates that society does not essentially improve from material changes, as an example, advances in
technology lead to the loss of some sorts of wisdom: The one that incorporates a watch loses the
flexibility to inform time by the sun s position in the sky. Thesis: Are self reliance and being
independent two sides of the same coin? This question is more like a debatable topic where different
individual have their own perspectives and views. The first objective mentioned above deals with self
reliance and the second mentioned below matches the contradictions of independence together with
self reliance. There is a clear space of overlapping however independence is regarding decision
making within the condition you are in, whereas self reliance concerns management of the resources
necessary to support significant independence. Over the past few years self reliance has decreased
remarkably throughout the world with the increase in dependencies of individuals on others and
entities. Individuals are getting more and more cross dependant and reliable on support either in
materialistic or moralistic means. Finally to be self reliant one need to do things metaphorically and
more figuratively that is in one s destiny

Parents Not Bureaucrats Should Decide What Kids Eat Summary
Should the government control what children eat or don t eat, or should parents step up to the plate

decide what kids eat by Daren Bakst, and First lady s fight for healthier food needs broad support by
William Rice both take a turn on the national issue of healthy eating. Daren Bakst states that it should
be parents that instruct their children on how they should eat and the government should not interfere
with this decision, even at school. But on the other hand William Rice explains that the obesity rate is
rising steadily each year and that we cannot afford not to put a plan into action. Even with these
differences both articles use the same tactics to share information throughout. Parents, not bureaucrats,

In Parents, not bureaucrats, should decide what kids eat Darren Bakst initiates a strong argument by
describing what would happen if the government had control over what children eat, for example,
School boards cannot ignore the higher costs and operational issues created by the rigid mandates of
the Health, Hunger Free Kids Act (Bakst 12). But on the other hand, author of First lady s fight for

Organizations that work most intensively to promote good nutrition, such as the Food Research and

The Effects Of Love In The Miracle Worker By Arthur Keller
If love is judged by its visible effects, it often looks more like hatred. As stated in the quote,
individuals tend to show their affection towards their loved ones in a rather aggressive fashion thus the
process of expressing one s love to another is often interpreted as hatred. However, this
misinterpretation only occurs when one s treatment of love is judged solely based on the visually
observable aspects. These actions actually show an insight into their genuine love, but the clumsiness
in expressing is what people mistakenly perceive as loathing and detestation. As a result, the
relationship between individuals develop contrary to the original intents as it is followed by individual
s actions, inevitably arousing disputes. In William Gibson s play based on Helen Keller s life, The
Miracle Worker, the characters also struggle with similar relationship conflicts revolving around the
idea of visible love ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning, Keller consistently rejected James rude behaviors. At one instance when James
refers Kate as Mrs. Keller instead of mother, Keller scolds James by heavily stating, Mrs. Keller. Must
you always speak of her as though you haven t met the lady? (24). The stage direction of Keller s
heavy tone infers the high volume of Keller s strictness towards James unreasonable attitude. As the
story progresses, the frequent clashes between the two characters gradually build antagonism in their
relationship. Eventually, James starts to fear, and pleads Keller in pain Don t don t (83). James painful
tone mentioned in the stage direction while interacting with Keller proves the corruption of their
relationship since James terror delineates his hate against Keller. The visible effects of love s treatment

Analysis Of The Film Green Lantern
As one can imagine, being trapped out in the ocean, hundreds of feet from any kind of safety while an
enormous shark is circling you, has to be the most frightening experience one can endure. Nancy, a
young medical student ventures out to a secluded beach in Mexico to enjoy some time surfing, but
little does she know how close to death she will come. The suspense that builds up as Nancy struggles
to escape her predator throughout the film is what keeps the viewers on their toes, as the entire movie
revolves around her plan to make it back to shore. This being the plot, can seem dull and uninteresting
at first, but as the film progresses, it s hard to take your eyes off the screen. The acting of Blake
Lively, who plays Nancy, helps to make the film even better, as many people know her from her other
acting rolls, such as Sarena van der Woodsen from the hit television show Gossip Girl and Carol Ferris
from the film Green Lantern . The director of the film, Jaume Collet Serra, is known for creating
movies with an extensive amount of suspense. He is able to get an incredible performance from actors,
as well as understand all of the scenes from the perspective of the viewers, thus giving him the ability
to know exactly what needs to take place to keep the film interesting. Because Blake Lively is in every
scene, it is obvious that the film is customized to her and her acting skills. She portrays a protagonist
who most overcome her fear and gain strength throughout the course

The Pros And Cons Of Attending College
High school Seniors are faced with a very important decision regarding their future. Where should a
person attend college following graduation? Attending college is important in helping people receive a
college degree that will help in educating them for a successful future. Deciding where to attend
college can be a challenging choice. The University of Kansas (KU) and Washburn University (WU)
are two colleges where one can obtain a degree. When deciding which college to attend, one must
consider the costs involved, the housing options, and the student activities offered.
When comparing colleges, a person should look at the various expenses and costs of each college. An
expense that comes with attending college is the cost of tuition. The cost of tuition at KU is $330.25
per credit hour based on taking thirty credits annually. AT WU, the tuition is cheaper as the cost per
credit hour is $281. Along with the cost of tuition, there are multiple fees that college attendees will be
required to pay. The campus fees at the University of Kansas is $916 for those enrolled in six or more
credit hours. The fees at Washburn University are far more expensive, as one would pay $1,650 for
taking six or more credit hours. Another cost that college students will be responsible for is housing.
With living on campus, the housing costs at both colleges depends on which dorm one chooses. An
advantage of living on campus is that food costs are covered in the housing plan. For instance, at KU,

Analysis of the Research Process in a recently published Business Research Study
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to analyze a recently conducted business research study in a
view to assess whether the researcher has followed all the basic and essential steps of the Business
Research Process or not. A Formal business research report starts with a brief introduction to the topic
and clearly defines the Statement of the problem. In the subsequent sections, a comprehensive
literature review is presented to give some background knowledge and explain the topic in the light of
relevant past research studies (Sekaran Bougie, 2010). The researcher proceeds with defining his
population, sample size, and methodology for his research study. Afterwards, he develops hypotheses
and uses different analytical and statistical tools to draw results and present his final conclusion
(Saunders, Lewis, Thornhill, 2006). The research study under analysis was conducted by Salim
Darmadi in Indonesia to analyze the relationship between the placement of females in the
Management Board of a firm and the financial performance of that firm. The researcher has reviewed
a number of articles and research studies from relevant Business, Economics, and Management
journals. The paper contains a detailed background and supporting knowledge in the Literature review
section. The author has used different regression models to analyze the dependent and independent

Collaborative Group Experience
Introduction Groups and teamwork are an essential aspect of everyday life. It is suggested that groups
have the potential to outperform individuals (Mottola Utkus, 2009). There are several facets that
impact teamwork, including communication, and cooperation. Conflicts and challenges are also
important aspects that can occur in teamwork. It is imperative to understand effective models, and
actions that can be taken to establish successful work. Experiential learning will be used to analyze a
group experience that the author found to be meaningful. Additionally, team dynamic concepts and
theories will aid in analyzing the experience.

The various challenges and conflicts impacted all the members of the group, and resulted in a subpar
presentation. As the presentation was a significant portion of our final grade, it was imperative for the
author as well as several other members to take initiative and salvage the presentation before it was a
complete disaster. The author behaved in this manner to ensure the requirements of the assignment
were met, and the presentation was delivered in order to avoid failure for the assignment. The other
members of the group that also took initiative to complete the assignment were motivated to achieve
these goals as well. The individuals that lacked participation were fueled by conflict and determined to
create a negative experience because of refusal for agreement. The individuals removed themselves
from the group and choose to work on aspects of the presentation alone. This impacted the group
negatively because there was lack of communication, and opinions from everyone involved. Joan
Bunashe and Lindsay Broder suggest that conflict isolates individuals and can have an impact on
creativity and productivity (Bunashe Broder, 2015). The actions of the individuals who refused to
participate in the group obstructed the presentation flow, and resulted in a negative experience for

I dreaded having the feeling of uselessness because I was unable participate in any sport. This meant I
was unable to play for my high school upcoming season. I became determined to learn as much as I
can about other performance issues that athletes might face. In the future I intend on applying for a
PhD program in sport psychology to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to work with
athletes and coaches on performance issues. Since deciding to change my major to psychology in
college I have been involved in volunteer work in order to undertake further study to prepare me for
the sport psychology field. I was a volunteer student assistant coach for the University of West
Georgia Women s Soccer Team. I worked individually with players to improve skills and helped

Canada s Nuclear Arms Race
Right after the end of World War II with the Allied forces rejoicing over a marginal victory over
Germany, a new and different kind of war was brewing over the tensions of the Western and Eastern
blocs, a kind that wouldn t be fought on the battlefield. The Cold War began in the year of 1945 and
lasted all the way until 1991. A cause of the Cold War was the tension between two former allies of
World War II, the United States of America and the Soviet Union (also known as the USSR, which
stood for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The United States had a democratic government
and a capitalist economy, while the Soviet Union had a communist government, each trying to spread

The Korean War was essentially a war that was started when North Korea decided to invade South
Korea, each backed up by their respective allies. When Canada first intervened in the war, Canada
supplied three Royal Canadian Navy destroyers (HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Cayuga, and HMCS
Sioux) and a Royal Canadian Air Force transport squadron, the No. 426 Thunderbird Squadron. After
being pressured by the American, UN, and domestic pressure, Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent
announced that the Canadian Army Special Force (CASF), later dubbed the 25th Canadian Infantry
Brigade Group, was to be created and used to expand contributions to South Korea. This was very
important because the extra squadrons and machinery helped turn the tides in many battles within the
war. Canada also contributed 26000 as part of a United Nations force which consisted of 16 countries
at the time. These troops were sent for both combat and for peacekeeping after the war. Out of the 516
Canadians that died, 312 died from combat. The peacekeepers that were left behind after the war
stayed for three years as military observers, and the final few Canadian soldiers left Korea in 1957.
These troops were extremely important to the war because they provided backup and aid to the UN
force, and also acted as peacekeepers after the war was over to ensure that the Korean War wouldn t
have a repeat. Lastly, Canadian forces helped

Overview Between Phonetics And Phonology
At the very beginning, I want to sheds the light on the definition of both Phonetics and Phonology.
Phonetics is considered the study of sounds of any language, it relates to the mechanism of how
sounds are produced and the way of speech sounds production. Phonology studies how those sounds
are put together to create meaning. It studies the rules of language that govern how those phonemes
are combined to create meaningful words. Hereunder detailed features of each branch of linguistics
are explained.
On one hand, Phonetics is talking about the physical aspect of sounds; it studies the production and
the perception of sounds, called phones. Phonetics is the term for the description and classification of
speech sounds. Sounds within phonetics are divided into vowels and consonants. Vowels are
embodied in the letters (i e o a u). Whereas, consonants letters are embodied in the rest set of English
language alphabets. Vowels and consonants describe the articulation of English language. Whereas
there is another branch of phonetics called Acoustic phonetics that is related to the study of how the
sounds are transmitted, in other words the journey of sound from the mouth of the speaker tills the ear

and determine where each sound source is occurring, i.e., at the larynx or at a constriction within the
vocal tract. There is difference between phonemes and allophones. A phoneme, is the smallest
contrastive unit in the sound system of a certain language. A phoneme is the smallest part of an
utterance that cannot be changed if we want to retain the meaning. For

My Personal Statement For College Students
In life, we have to make everyday decisions. Some of the decisions are harder to make. For example,
as college students, we struggle to decide what major to study. As we are growing up we discover
more and more things that we like to do. When I was a child, I remember the sweet words of my
elementary teacher, Ms. Amy, Karen, as you go through different life stages, you will discover
different interests in your life . Now that I am an adult, I agree with her because every day in my life, I
experience something new and worth it. Not starting college right after high school gave me the
opportunity to discover a career that I never thought about it. I always thought that I will enjoy being
an accountant because my favorite subject is math, but after working in a job that exposes me to that
field I discover that I did not want to do that for the rest of my life. However, when I started working
in a field that I found uninteresting, it helped me to discover my passion for technology. This became
an important element in selecting information technology as my career. Exploring different careers
fields help me to decide my college degree. Researching for facts about information technology has
become an influential element to know more about my future professional career. Perusing articles
give us particular data on themes that we are intrigued. As an information technology major I have

the implementation of altruism by the rich to help the poor and less fortunate. These two character
foils originate from similar backgrounds and beginnings Hugo even has the two live together for

St. Thomas More Discourse Community
Before delving into the the discourse community, it is essential to provided clarity for the term that is

Discourse, with a capital D, for ways of combining and integrating language, actions, interactions,
ways of thinking, believing, valuing, and using various symbols, tools, and objects to enact a
particular sort of socially recognizable identity. (Gee, p. 441). With this, a Discourse community is a
group of people that embody language, actions, beliefs, symbols and so on. St. Thomas More parish is

Otherwise, we have dogma, doctrines, and creeds that we also believe. (Kane). To someone outside of
the Catholic church, they would not hold the same beliefs to be true nor understand the reasons for
their belief. Nevertheless, these traditions have been passed down for generations and are still upheld
today. As Kane pointed out, Catholics believe that Holy Communion is the body and blood of Christ.
Having very traditional beliefs, the Catholic Church uses numerous different terms and practices that
are not familiar with non Catholics. Inside of the Discourse community, Catholics have set terms that
are used widely to discuss different matters. For instances, the term priest is used to describe what
others would typically call a pastor. In addition to the terms used, there are also rituals that are based
on their traditional beliefs. The most drastic of them would be the Eucharist. This tradition is referred
to by Catholics as Holy Communion and is referred to by protestants as The Lord s Supper. Meg Kane
described the differences by saying, Catholics actually believe that the Eucharist is the body and blood
of Christ. It has much more meaning behind it than other communion services. (Kane). Drastically
differing from other religions, Catholics believe that their priest was granted the ability by God to turn
the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Traditional values and the faith of
Catholics largely affects the Discourse community and

Alka Seltzer Temperature Change Lab Results
How does the dissolve rate of the Alka Seltzer tablets change as the temperature of the water changes?
The dissolve rate is being affected by the temperature of the water. Temperature is a measure of
kinetic energy in molecules (NYU). The higher the temperature, the higher the kinetic energy. Energy
is required to create a reaction. Molecules with more energy come into contact with each other more
often. The molecules of the reactants have to come into contact with each other, so more energy in
molecules result in faster dissolving time.
If the temperature of the water increases, the dissolving time of the Alka Seltzer tablet will decrease.
This is because molecules of warmer water contain more energy than molecules of cooler water. The
extra ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of our flaws was that the temperature of the water was not exactly the same when we did the
different trials. The temperatures were slightly off from our recorded value during the experiments.
The change in temperature would affect the time it took for the Alka Seltzer tablet to dissolve in the
water. If there was a direct relationship between water temperature and dissolve time, we would not be
able to see it because the temperatures are off and the dissolve times are not associated with the
correct temperature. Another flaw is that we did not use the same amount of water throughout the
experiment. We used a beaker to measure the water, which did not result in accurate measurements.
The difference in amount of water could result in a difference in reaction time. The third flaw in the
experiment was that during the reaction of the warm water, the water in the cup overflowed and
spilled, bringing some of the Alka Seltzer tablet with it. There were different amounts of tablet in
different areas of the water, which means a different amount of Alka Seltzer remained inside of the
cup in each trial. This difference would mean that data for the warm water would fluctuate and we
would not have accurate

Spaying And Neuter Pets Essay
the Arms of an Angel and there are dogs and cats sitting behind a closed kennel door looking at the

on the radio. There are many millions of animals that are unloved, neglected and abandoned in shelters
each year because people do not participate in getting their animals spayed or neutered or the animals
are over bred for profit.
Animal overcrowding in shelters is only one reason of many as to why pet owners should spay or
neuter their pets, but it is the most important reason of all. Shelters all over the United States are past
the overcrowded level and even dog rescue groups are finding it harder and harder everyday to find

When you think about all these situations, the amount of animals in a shelter can rapidly increase
every day, and this is very sad that we have done this to our furry friends .
Spaying and neutering your animal can not only help with the overcrowding in shelters but can
actually be beneficial to your home and pets. Male dogs and cats when un neutered have a tendency to
mark their property. When they mark their territory it can lead to a very unpleasant smell in and
around your home. Have you ever walked a dog and noticed them peeing frequently on fire hydrants,
trees, corners or certain sections in the yard? This would be your male animal stating that he is a male.
When you neuter your male animal, this behavior decreases and thus you can have a cleaner smelling
house. Also, it is a recognizes concept amongst pet owners that getting your animal fixed can help
with behavioral issues such as aggression, dominance, and also sexual arousal around a female animal.
Female dogs and cats go into a heat cycle, similar to that of a female human. Their cycle causes them
to bleed for about two weeks and can make quite the mess if you are not planning for it. Also, spaying
can help with the females behavior as well; they mellow down and are less fussy. If you re a female
you know that when you re on your cycle you can be temperamental, it s the same for female dogs and
cats.
There is also health related issues that are more prominent in animals that aren t

The Consequences Of Improper Hygiene And Social Safety
Many people don t understand the consequences of improper hygiene. However, they also don t
understand the benefits of correct hygiene. This results in being unclean and unsanitary, which can
lead to issues in the professional world, a person s overall health, and their social life. Proper hygiene
leads to a better chance of getting a job, overall body health, and it improves self esteem and social
acceptance.
Has anyone ever imagined a device that can improve their hygiene without them needing to do any

flexibility of the courts when it comes to precedent. Although precedent is largely unquestioned by
Irish Courts, that doesn t mean that it s a rigid, fixed rule.

It upholds the concept of legal certainty of law and is committed to the Doctrine of Stare Decisis.
Similar to the Supreme Court, the High court will depart from precedent but is unlikely to do so. In
Attorney General V Residential Institutions Board, Hogan J decided a case but would have done so
differently if it wasn t covered by recent authority. Thus he was compelled to follow precedent with
deep personal reluctance . It is clear that the High Court is reluctant to depart from Precedent. In
Kearns v Manresa Estates Ltd [1975], Kenny observed that the High Court will not depart from
precedent unless the case has been wrongly decided. There are practical reasons for this. The High
Court is the court of first Instance and it ought to ensure predictability and stability. There is the option
to the Supreme Court if the parties involved are not happy with the decision. The Supreme Court can
be more flexible and can take into account other facts of the case. Both the Supreme Court and the
High Court have the possibility of departing from president. This proves that the Doctrine of Stare

Treatise On Pornography
An Open Secret: A Treatise on Pornography
In the 1980s in America, a war raged. There were casualties and broken lives. What transpired during
that war changed the face of America for generations. This was not a war between countries however;
this was a war between women: what they called the The Feminist Sex Wars . Anti porn feminists led
by Andrea Dworkin debated with pro sex feminists on subjects such as prostitution, erotica, and
pornography and their position within feminism and our society. Dworkin and her supporters argued
that these were products of a patriarchal society, that these were extremely harmful toward the image
and status of women. Others such as Susie Bright argue that prostitution and pornography can be
feminist or empowering to women, and are not intrinsically harmful. In this paper, I will endorse the
view of radical feminists that pornography is harmful, not only for those who appear in it, but those
who consume it.
Before we explore the topic of pornography and its harms, we must look at what radical feminism is.
Radical feminism, the theory espoused by leading critic of pornography Andrea Dworkin, is the idea
that women are biological class which oppressed by the dominant class of men. Patriarchal power
surrounds women completely, through all media and institutions. According to radical feminists, it is
only through the complete destruction of all patriarchal institutions can women truly be free. It is
through this lens that the anti porn

The Red Wheelbarrow Rhetorical Devices
William Carlos Williams used many different forms of rhetorical devices to portray his overall tone or
message for certain lines of his poems. In The Red Wheelbarrow , William s used alliteration,
imagery, and form to present his theme. The overall theme of this modern poem explains the ties
between the natural world and man. The wheelbarrow acts as a symbol of strength, describing how
nature takes care of the world without the presence of man. The author specifically articulated this
poem s stanzas in order to step outside the lines of most poems. Throughout the poem many forms of
alliteration are presented. In line 1 the repeating s sound is strategically placed to create the sound of
rain as the reader deciphers the poem. The

Resistance To Affirmative Action
Resistance to affirmative action has existed from the time it was introduced (Allen, 2011; Kaufmann,
2007), and in many instances, the U.S. Supreme Court has played a crucial role in determining the
extent to which it can achieve its original goals (Zamani Brown, 2003). One of the earliest cases to
challenge the use of affirmative action was DeFunis v. Odegaard (1973), of which the court found the
University of Washington Law School s use of race in admissions to be unconstitutional (Platt, 2007;
Zamani Brown, 2003). The law school was accused of having separate admissions procedures for
students of color by giving less weight to their predicted first year averages. As such, DeFunis argued
that underqualified students of color had been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kirwan (1994), a federal court ruled on the constitutionality of race based merit scholarships. In this
case, the merit based Benjamin Banneker Scholarship, earmarked for African American students,
sought to attract academically talented African American students to the University of Maryland at
College Park. The court ruled it was not permissible to maintain separate financial merit awards
according to race (Shapiro, 1995), illustrating the increasing difficulties postsecondary institutions
faced to designate a fellowship or scholarship specifically for racial/ethnic minorities (Platt, 2007). In
fact, efforts to prohibit affirmative action in the United States really ramped up in the mid 1990 s. For
instance, in 1996 the Supreme Court upheld California s Proposition 209, an amendment to the state
constitution that banned both discrimination and affirmative action programs that give preferences to
groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity, or national origin. To that end, race
could not be used as a consideration (e.g., admissions and hiring decisions) in public education
(Alvarez Bedolla, 2004). In addition, in Hopwood v. Texas (1996), the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
issued a decision ending affirmative action in both private and public college admissions in Texas,
Louisiana, and Mississippi. More litigation continued in 1997 (Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v.
Bollinger) that challenged the use of affirmative action in undergraduate and law school admissions,
and in 1998, Washington voters passed Initiative 200, a nearly identical policy to Prop. 209. In 1999,
Florida Governor Jeb Bush pre issued an executive order ending consideration of race and ethnicity in
public college and university admissions, public employment, and government contracting. Such
attacks on affirmative action policies are prompting colleges and universities to abandon race sensitive
programs, such as scholarships, academic enrichment programs,

The Benefits of a Gap Year Essay
Taking a gap year off between high school and university has become a popular alternative among
many adolescents. A gap year is a period of time, usually an academic year, when a student takes a
break from formal education and routine ( Gap Year. ). This time off provides a break after many years
of formal study and is often spent travelling or working. In the past, taking a gap year resulted in
problematic return into education. Today, however, they are generally seen as positive and are
supported by Universities and employers. The idea behind a gap year is that it offers opportunities
practical experiences, which enable young people to learn more about themselves and what they want
to do in their future. While education is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Greg Kristof, a gap year taker and now sophomore at Harvard University, stated in the interview
that I conducted, In America it seems that college is a huge rite of passage when actually it s a huge
investment . Differences in the US schooling system, including more travel experiences and
extracurricular activities conclude in the need for a gap year being decreased. Additionally, there s a
sense of ignorance towards gap years in the US. In is common for American high schools to provide
students with counselors and programs to help them prepare for college. In conjunction with this, AP
tests and the SATs are designed to streamline the college application process; making continuing on to
college is a natural and expected next step. Gap years are not as common in the US due to the
unfamiliarity of gap years and the different schooling system.

Of Mice Vs Mice
Have you been dealing with mice in your home for years and can t seem to get them out? You re not
alone: mice are incredibly clever creatures that are nearly impossible to catch, let alone eliminate. First
of all, mice have incredibly senses. Their hearing range is wide and includes incredibly high pitched
sounds, which makes it easier for them to hear you coming. And their smell is very strong: they
actually recognize living creatures almost entirely by smell. Some mice can even track intruders and
friends by sniffing out their footprints. And while mice have fairly poor vision, they make up for it
with their sense of touch. Those cute little whiskers detect vibrations and send these sensations
directly to their brain. However, long tactile fur also threads through their coat, giving them an even
stronger sense of touch. They can often literally feel your footsteps from across the house. ... Show

Real World Periodic Motion Analysis
Real World Periodic Function One of the key characteristics of periodic motion is its period. The
period, T, is the time required to complete one full cycle of the motion. I chose a sprinkler because it
takes approximately five seconds to move from maximum displacement in one direction to maximum
displacement in the opposite direction. It again takes another five seconds to go back to the starting
point. In this case it takes ten seconds to complete one cycle of oscillation, and the period is ten
seconds. Since the sprinkler has a motion that repeats in equal intervals of time, it is therefore a
perfect example of periodic motion. As to derive the functions used in this paper, I had to gather data
for use in the analysis. This is

Special attention should also be paid to the factor of stress. The workers have to deal with two
different forms of stress. On the one hand they suffer under the high pressure and frequently abusive
work environments and on the other hand the stress which is forced by their supervisors if they do not
for example manage to produce the expected quality standards.
1.1.2 Working Hours
The offense against the observance of working hours points out another example of the inhumane
labor conditions at Nikes manufactures. The Code of Conduct foresees a weekly work load of 60
hours. In addition all workers have the right to one day off a week. Further conditions are set down in
local employment laws. Overtime hours should only be disposed if necessary and workers have to be
remunerated for that. Many suppliers have thus reduced the number of overtime hours so that they
confirm to the Code of Conduct. However, workers must now complete the required number of units
in a shorter amount of time in order to satisfy the sporting goods manufacturers production schedule.
Workers complained about increased stress caused by tightened production schedules and new
production system introduced by management to offset the reduction in working hours. The reduction
of working hours which at first appeared advantageous has apparently turned into a detriment for
workers.

Another example of the inhumane conditions in the Nike factories is the low wages. A

away society. Consumption plays a big part in our lives and causes us to live in divided societies. It
may make us feel like we fit in buying new gadgets and clothes and also give us that sense of
belonging but we don t take into account what happens to the old items and packaging. People do not
want to look at the problems caused. I will use this essay with the evidence I have read ... Show more

We often question how our food and clothes can be sold so cheap, this all comes down to where it is
made or grown. Our clothes are made overseas in factories by women and in some cases even children
in unsuitable conditions. They work long hours and don t get paid much in return, it is said to be less
than what they can afford to live on and made to work extra hours. This is why large stores like
Primark and Asda can sell their clothes at such little cost. Some of the workers are said to be working
60 to 90 hours every week for as little as £17 per month. (Making social lives pg.88) The workers in
the factories are grateful for their small wage and would struggle if the factories were to close and
business was took elsewhere.
The growth of consumption has caused a large increase in rubbish. This is due to people having more
choice when out shopping. Many years ago women stayed at home and men went to work but now
that both men and women are out earning there is a lot more disposable income which ends with
people buying luxuries and upgrading items they already have. This results in the old ones being
thrown away. People are constantly upgrading and renewing items to better models. Mobile phones
bring out new models every year which people feel the need to buy to keep up with the trend and
because they want the newest gadgets on the street. Pcs have changed to laptops which gives the pc no
home except out to be collected on bin day. This causes a problem

Animal Shelter Advertisement Analysis
There are millions of animals are in shelters nationwide. Among those millions of animals in shelters,
there is proximity 31 % or 2.7 million of those animals that are euthanized each year. The Shelter Pet
Project. org is a website not that sells dogs, but to spread the word that pets in shelters are wonderful
and lovable., and encourage people to consider going to their local animal shelter and adopt a pet
instead of buying one from a breeder. In this ad they are advertising a new website, this website is
used to make shelters the first place potential adopters turn when looking for a new pet. This ensures
that all the pets find loving homes. The advertisement is a happy, healthy, beautiful dog staring
directly at the viewer with a happy look. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a very subtle way, I think that the ad seeks to make everyone want to adopt a pet. The happy look
that this dog has in the ad is joyful and makes the viewer want to smile. For any person, this would
pull them right to the ad. Hoping to get the same look from an animal, the people viewing this add
would adopt a dog. Also, this ad demonstrates a pet being a symbol of family and love. By talking
about the dog being happy, healthy, clean, and doing tricks, family and love are brought into
perspective. The picture of this ad reminds people that not all horror stories heard about shelter pets
are true, that even shelter pets that might be mutts can still be happy, and reminds everyone that
shelter pets want love

The Monkey s Paw by W.W. Jacobs
Would you want three wishes to be granted to you? You probably said yes, but have you ever thought
of anything that could go wrong with your three wishes? In W.W. Jacobs, The Monkey s Paw , the
story is about the White family who received a monkey s paw that allows three wishes to be made.
They find out that this monkey s paw is one big troublemaker that causes havoc and unrest. Overall,
The Monkey s Paw , had very distinct and believable characters and a great plot that was fraught with
danger and suspense. One element I like in The Monkey s Paw was it had very distinct characters. For
instance, Mrs. White s unawareness of what s going to happen really contributes to the outcome of the
story. If it weren t for Mrs. White s naïve and unwary personality, the book probably would have been
different as this quote suggests. Wish! she cried in a strong voice. It s foolish and wicked, said Mr.
White. Wish! repeated his wife. (192) When she had forced Mr. White to make this wish she did not
know that Herbert would come back as an undead corpse. Every mom wants her kid, but she did not
realize that bringing her son would make things even worst. Along with Mrs. White s unwariness, Mr.
White s interest in the paw without a doubt contributes to the developing story. I deem that Mr. White
paid no attention to the warnings Sergeant Morris conveyed. Pitch it in the fire like a sensible man
said Morris. Mr. White shook his head and examined his new possession closely. How

Tim Donaghy Case Summary
Introduction Edwin J. Delattre describes in Some Reflections on Success and failure in Competitive
Athletics that competitive athletics require a touchstone relationship of competitors i.e. that
competitors have a moral and logical obligation to not engage in cheating. Competitive sports leagues
and organizations have taken several measures to achieve competitive balance or fairness in regards to
the spirit of competition. Competitive leagues have implemented the draft process to ensure that teams
with the worst records are able to acquire top draft pick players to help improve losing teams, and
salary caps to prevent a select few teams from acquiring all of the talented players and depriving the
rest of the league from being able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First issue: according to Donaghy, he was placing bets on NBA games for four years. Donaghy s
admission beings into questions if other referees were aware of his activities and if other referees were
aware of Donaghy s fixing games were these other NBA officials were active participants in this
crime. If other officials were involved, it would question NBA commissioner David Stern claim that
Tim Donaghy was a rogue official fixing games only without any other NBA officials or
administrators assistance or knowledge of his illegal activities. Although FBI officials were only able
to prove Donaghy was the only official involved and Donaghy was the only official to be indicted and
convicted, it is difficult to convince many in the public that other official had no knowledge or
participated in betting on games, NBA commissioner Stern admitted suspicion of the other NBA
officials integrity will be an ongoing issue when according to author Michael Bush Mr. Stern said he
knew his referees would be under an incredible amount of scrutiny this season due to last summer s
betting and game fixing scandal involving then referee Mr. Donaghy. And with Mr. Donaghy s latest
allegations, Mr. Stern said it s no surprise some fans have become a bit distrustful. (We have an issue).

Executive Summary The adoption of IFRS around the world is occurring rapidly to bring about
accounting quality improvement through a uniform set of standards for financial reporting. However,
accounting quality is a function of the firm s overall institutional setting, including the legal and
political system of the country in which the firm resides. This paper documents the prospects of IFRS
adoption and their impact on the financial reporting environment of Bangladesh considering the
underlying institutional and economic factors. It argues about trade off between the scale advantage of
IFRSs (designed globally by the highly sophisticated authority) and the local advantage of
decentralized adaptation. It is also an effort to focus on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Belkaoui,1994). Despite the difficult process Anderson (1993) said a set of international accounting
standards will allow new horizons of evolution due to the fact that comparative analysis of the rates of
returns established based on the balance sheets and profit and loss account between the companies
being in competition become relevant . The comparison, as the basic form of economical judgment
can be realized only if the accounting system is unique for all the companies involved in the analysis.
Also harmonization is absolutely necessary because national standards of financial statements are
virtually useless; financial markets in more regulated countries are threatened with a loss of market
share; and multinational corporations must prepare multiple reports for different nations they do
business in. (Nobes and Parker 1991). In order to accomplish this target the accounting profession
developed the solutions like: the American solution GAAP or the European solution (British solution
to be read) IAS/IFRS. On the backdrop of getting a single set of international accounting standards
(since October 2002, the IASB and FASB have been working systematically toward convergence of
IFRS and U.S. GAAP), IFRS is rapidly gaining acceptance as over 100 countries have recently moved
to IFRS reporting or decided to require the use of

American labor union leader. Samuel founded the American Federation of Labor and served as the

Workers in New York City are trying to raise their paycheck to $15 per hour. The workers message
was they cannot survive on their paychecks. Who is involved in it? Retail workers from Walmart and
other chains, home care and child care workers, convenience store and dollar store workers, adjunct
university faculty and others have joined strikes to demand a pay raise to $15 per hour. What are they
doing to try to change this? New York workers went on a Strike for $15 . Rallies had been planned for
1,000 cities across the nation, New York state has approved a law to gradually increase the wage to
$15. The past is related to today because they are both trying to change something. In the past, they
were fighting for better wages, reasonable hours, and safer conditions. It also tried to stop child labor,
give health benefits, and provide aid to workers who were injured or retired. And today, workers are
trying to raise they pay check to $15 per hour. In New York, workers are going on strikes to raise their
pay check. This impacts me because once I get a job, if the paycheck is still $7.00 then I won t have
enough money to get the things I need. Or, when I have a house or apartment, what if I can t pay all
the expenses because I don t have enough money. This is how it impacts

Child Abuse Is A Social Problem Essay
Child abuse is a social problem that continuously produces a wave of concern. The State of New
Jersey Department of Children and Families explains that Abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional
harm or risk of harm to another child under the age of 18 caused by a parent or other person who acts
as a caregiver for the child (2016). The harsh reality of child abuse and its consequences is recognized
throughout this essay. The cost of child abuse can be understood through direct and indirect costs.
Direct costs describe those of the child welfare system, judicial and law enforcement, health and
mental health systems (New Jersey Child Assault Prevention, 2015). Comparatively, indirect costs
apply to much more long term problems/a turn of events the child victim and their abuser(s) may
have. These costs involve the effects abuse has or may have in regards to education, mental health,
substance abuse, teen pregnancy, welfare dependency, domestic violence, homelessness, juvenile
delinquency and adult criminality (New Jersey Child Assault Prevention, 2015). It costs a substantial
amount of money to deal with child abuse. Moving away from these consequences, it is arguable that
children exposed to violence or abuse, if left unaddressed or ignored, are at an increased risk for
emotional and behavioral problems in the future. They may not be able to express their feelings safely
and as a result, may develop difficulties regulating their emotions (Joyful Heart

The study used a 5 item Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) developed by Diener et al. (1985) to
measure undergraduate student s life satisfaction and were measured using a 5 point Likert scale,
ranging from 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree with a high overall reliability of 0.78 in this
study. Students were asked to state their degree of satisfaction with several aspects of life including
educational experience, academic performance, friendships, health and living environment. Results
show that there was a significant negative correlation between the two variables with higher levels of
perceived stress associated with lower levels of satisfaction with life (Alleyne Greenidge, 2010)
Next, the study conducted by Kamarudin Rafidah, Aris Azizah, Mohd Daud Norzaidi, Siong Choy
Chong, Mohamed Intan Salwani and Ibrahim Noraini from Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia
and Putra International College, Melaka, Malaysia was to examine the relationship between stress
factors (health, social and academic) and the level of perceived stress at three different periods of a
semester (beginning, middle and end) and their impact on the academic performance of Pre Diploma
Science students at the University of Technology MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. The population of the Pre

  • 3. What Are Emerson s Views On Individualism Emerson begins his major work on individualism by declaring the importance of thinking for oneself instead of humbly acquiring someone else s belief. Emerson says, To believe that what is true in your private heart is true for all men that is genius . The one who scorns personal intuition and, instead, chooses to admit others opinions lacks the inventive power necessary for strong, fearless individualism. Emerson says, Trust thyself, a saying that ties along this initial section of the essay. This simply resembles to believe others judgments is poor spirited, with no inspiration or hope. An individual with dignity, exhibits originality and is childish unspoiled by egoistic desires but mature. Emerson currently focuses his attention ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Religion s main drawback is its worry of individual creativeness. Emerson s criticism of society, and particularly its misguided notion of progress, differs from his earlier comments on the topic. He debates that society does not essentially improve from material changes, as an example, advances in technology lead to the loss of some sorts of wisdom: The one that incorporates a watch loses the flexibility to inform time by the sun s position in the sky. Thesis: Are self reliance and being independent two sides of the same coin? This question is more like a debatable topic where different individual have their own perspectives and views. The first objective mentioned above deals with self reliance and the second mentioned below matches the contradictions of independence together with self reliance. There is a clear space of overlapping however independence is regarding decision making within the condition you are in, whereas self reliance concerns management of the resources necessary to support significant independence. Over the past few years self reliance has decreased remarkably throughout the world with the increase in dependencies of individuals on others and entities. Individuals are getting more and more cross dependant and reliable on support either in materialistic or moralistic means. Finally to be self reliant one need to do things metaphorically and more figuratively that is in one s destiny ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Parents Not Bureaucrats Should Decide What Kids Eat Summary Should the government control what children eat or don t eat, or should parents step up to the plate and decide what their own children should eat. The two articles, Parents, not bureaucrats, should decide what kids eat by Daren Bakst, and First lady s fight for healthier food needs broad support by William Rice both take a turn on the national issue of healthy eating. Daren Bakst states that it should be parents that instruct their children on how they should eat and the government should not interfere with this decision, even at school. But on the other hand William Rice explains that the obesity rate is rising steadily each year and that we cannot afford not to put a plan into action. Even with these differences both articles use the same tactics to share information throughout. Parents, not bureaucrats, should decide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But on the other hand, author of First lady s fight for healthier food needs broad support , William Rice combats the argument of Darren Bakst by stating, Organizations that work most intensively to promote good nutrition, such as the Food Research and Action Center, and most closely, with students, such as the National Education Association, wholeheartedly support the meal standards and are fighting efforts to water them down (Rice 12).This shows that these two articles are contrary of each other; however, they both use strong evidence and wording to prove their ... • 5. The Effects Of Love In The Miracle Worker By Arthur Keller If love is judged by its visible effects, it often looks more like hatred. As stated in the quote, individuals tend to show their affection towards their loved ones in a rather aggressive fashion thus the process of expressing one s love to another is often interpreted as hatred. However, this misinterpretation only occurs when one s treatment of love is judged solely based on the visually observable aspects. These actions actually show an insight into their genuine love, but the clumsiness in expressing is what people mistakenly perceive as loathing and detestation. As a result, the relationship between individuals develop contrary to the original intents as it is followed by individual s actions, inevitably arousing disputes. In William Gibson s play based on Helen Keller s life, The Miracle Worker, the characters also struggle with similar relationship conflicts revolving around the idea of visible love ... As the story progresses, the frequent clashes between the two characters gradually build antagonism in their relationship. Eventually, James starts to fear, and pleads Keller in pain Don t don t (83). • 6. Analysis Of The Film Green Lantern As one can imagine, being trapped out in the ocean, hundreds of feet from any kind of safety while an enormous shark is circling you, has to be the most frightening experience one can endure. Nancy, a young medical student ventures out to a secluded beach in Mexico to enjoy some time surfing, but little does she know how close to death she will come. The suspense that builds up as Nancy struggles to escape her predator throughout the film is what keeps the viewers on their toes, as the entire movie revolves around her plan to make it back to shore. This being the plot, can seem dull and uninteresting at first, but as the film progresses, it s hard to take your eyes off the screen. The acting of Blake Lively, who plays Nancy, helps to make the film even better, as many people know her from her other acting rolls, such as Sarena van der Woodsen from the hit television show Gossip Girl and Carol Ferris from the film Green Lantern . The director of the film, Jaume Collet Serra, is known for creating movies with an extensive amount of suspense. He is able to get an incredible performance from actors, as well as understand all of the scenes from the perspective of the viewers, thus giving him the ability to know exactly what needs to take place to keep the film interesting. Attending college is important in helping people receive a college degree that will help in educating them for a successful future. Deciding where to attend college can be a challenging choice. The University of Kansas (KU) and Washburn University (WU) are two colleges where one can obtain a degree. When deciding which college to attend, one must consider the costs involved, the housing options, and the student activities offered. When comparing colleges, a person should look at the various expenses and costs of each college. An expense that comes with attending college is the cost of tuition. The cost of tuition at KU is $330.25 per credit hour based on taking thirty credits annually. AT WU, the tuition is cheaper as the cost per credit hour is $281. Along with the cost of tuition, there are multiple fees that college attendees will be required to pay. The campus fees at the University of Kansas is $916 for those enrolled in six or more credit hours. The author behaved in this manner to ensure the requirements of the assignment were met, and the presentation was delivered in order to avoid failure for the assignment. The other members of the group that also took initiative to complete the assignment were motivated to achieve these goals as well. The individuals that lacked participation were fueled by conflict and determined to create a negative experience because of refusal for agreement. The individuals removed themselves from the group and choose to work on aspects of the presentation alone. This impacted the group negatively because there was lack of communication, and opinions from everyone involved. Canada s Nuclear Arms Race Right after the end of World War II with the Allied forces rejoicing over a marginal victory over Germany, a new and different kind of war was brewing over the tensions of the Western and Eastern blocs, a kind that wouldn t be fought on the battlefield. The Cold War began in the year of 1945 and lasted all the way until 1991. A cause of the Cold War was the tension between two former allies of World War II, the United States of America and the Soviet Union (also known as the USSR, which stood for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). When Canada first intervened in the war, Canada supplied three Royal Canadian Navy destroyers (HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Cayuga, and HMCS Sioux) and a Royal Canadian Air Force transport squadron, the No. 426 Thunderbird Squadron. After being pressured by the American, UN, and domestic pressure, Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent announced that the Canadian Army Special Force (CASF), later dubbed the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group, was to be created and used to expand contributions to South Korea. This was very important because the extra squadrons and machinery helped turn the tides in many battles within the war. • 12. Overview Between Phonetics And Phonology At the very beginning, I want to sheds the light on the definition of both Phonetics and Phonology. Phonetics is considered the study of sounds of any language, it relates to the mechanism of how sounds are produced and the way of speech sounds production. Phonology studies how those sounds are put together to create meaning. It studies the rules of language that govern how those phonemes are combined to create meaningful words. Hereunder detailed features of each branch of linguistics are explained. On one hand, Phonetics is talking about the physical aspect of sounds; it studies the production and the perception of sounds, called phones. Phonetics is the term for the description and classification of speech sounds. Sounds within phonetics are divided into vowels and consonants. Vowels are embodied in the letters (i e o a u). Whereas, consonants letters are embodied in the rest set of English language alphabets. Vowels and consonants describe the articulation of English language. Now that I am an adult, I agree with her because every day in my life, I experience something new and worth it. Having very traditional beliefs, the Catholic Church uses numerous different terms and practices that are not familiar with non Catholics. The most drastic of them would be the Eucharist. This tradition is referred to by Catholics as Holy Communion and is referred to by protestants as The Lord s Supper. Meg Kane described the differences by saying, Catholics actually believe that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ. It has much more meaning behind it than other communion services. (Kane). • 16. Alka Seltzer Temperature Change Lab Results How does the dissolve rate of the Alka Seltzer tablets change as the temperature of the water changes? The dissolve rate is being affected by the temperature of the water. Temperature is a measure of kinetic energy in molecules (NYU). The higher the temperature, the higher the kinetic energy. Energy is required to create a reaction. Molecules with more energy come into contact with each other more often. The molecules of the reactants have to come into contact with each other, so more energy in molecules result in faster dissolving time. If the temperature of the water increases, the dissolving time of the Alka Seltzer tablet will decrease. This is because molecules of warmer water contain more energy than molecules of cooler water. The extra ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of our flaws was that the temperature of the water was not exactly the same when we did the different trials. The temperatures were slightly off from our recorded value during the experiments. The change in temperature would affect the time it took for the Alka Seltzer tablet to dissolve in the water. If there was a direct relationship between water temperature and dissolve time, we would not be able to see it because the temperatures are off and the dissolve times are not associated with the correct temperature. Another flaw is that we did not use the same amount of water throughout the experiment. We used a beaker to measure the water, which did not result in accurate measurements. The difference in amount of water could result in a difference in reaction time. The third flaw in the experiment was that during the reaction of the warm water, the water in the cup overflowed and spilled, bringing some of the Alka Seltzer tablet with it. There were different amounts of tablet in different areas of the water, which means a different amount of Alka Seltzer remained inside of the cup in each trial. • 17. Spaying And Neuter Pets Essay the Arms of an Angel and there are dogs and cats sitting behind a closed kennel door looking at the camera with sad eyes. This breaks my heart every time I see this commercial or hear the song playing on the radio. There are many millions of animals that are unloved, neglected and abandoned in shelters each year because people do not participate in getting their animals spayed or neutered or the animals are over bred for profit. Animal overcrowding in shelters is only one reason of many as to why pet owners should spay or neuter their pets, but it is the most important reason of all. Shelters all over the United States are past the overcrowded level and even dog rescue groups are finding it harder and harder everyday to find homes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When you think about all these situations, the amount of animals in a shelter can rapidly increase every day, and this is very sad that we have done this to our furry friends . Spaying and neutering your animal can not only help with the overcrowding in shelters but can actually be beneficial to your home and pets. Male dogs and cats when un neutered have a tendency to mark their property. When they mark their territory it can lead to a very unpleasant smell in and around your home. Have you ever walked a dog and noticed them peeing frequently on fire hydrants, trees, corners or certain sections in the yard? This would be your male animal stating that he is a male. When you neuter your male animal, this behavior decreases and thus you can have a cleaner smelling house. Also, it is a recognizes concept amongst pet owners that getting your animal fixed can help with behavioral issues such as aggression, dominance, and also sexual arousal around a female animal. Female dogs and cats go into a heat cycle, similar to that of a female human. Their cycle causes them to bleed for about two weeks and can make quite the mess if you are not planning for it. Also, spaying can help with the females behavior as well; they mellow down and are less fussy. If you re a female you know that when you re on your cycle you can be temperamental, it s the same for female dogs and cats. There is also health related issues that are more prominent in animals that aren t ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What transpired during that war changed the face of America for generations. This was not a war between countries however; this was a war between women: what they called the The Feminist Sex Wars . Anti porn feminists led by Andrea Dworkin debated with pro sex feminists on subjects such as prostitution, erotica, and pornography and their position within feminism and our society. Dworkin and her supporters argued that these were products of a patriarchal society, that these were extremely harmful toward the image and status of women. Others such as Susie Bright argue that prostitution and pornography can be feminist or empowering to women, and are not intrinsically harmful. In this paper, I will endorse the view of radical feminists that pornography is harmful, not only for those who appear in it, but those who consume it. Before we explore the topic of pornography and its harms, we must look at what radical feminism is. Radical feminism, the theory espoused by leading critic of pornography Andrea Dworkin, is the idea that women are biological class which oppressed by the dominant class of men. Patriarchal power surrounds women completely, through all media and institutions. Resistance To Affirmative Action Resistance to affirmative action has existed from the time it was introduced (Allen, 2011; Kaufmann, 2007), and in many instances, the U.S. Supreme Court has played a crucial role in determining the extent to which it can achieve its original goals (Zamani Brown, 2003). One of the earliest cases to challenge the use of affirmative action was DeFunis v. Odegaard (1973), of which the court found the University of Washington Law School s use of race in admissions to be unconstitutional (Platt, 2007; Zamani Brown, 2003). Kirwan (1994), a federal court ruled on the constitutionality of race based merit scholarships. In this case, the merit based Benjamin Banneker Scholarship, earmarked for African American students, sought to attract academically talented African American students to the University of Maryland at College Park. The court ruled it was not permissible to maintain separate financial merit awards according to race (Shapiro, 1995), illustrating the increasing difficulties postsecondary institutions faced to designate a fellowship or scholarship specifically for racial/ethnic minorities (Platt, 2007). In fact, efforts to prohibit affirmative action in the United States really ramped up in the mid 1990 s. For instance, in 1996 the Supreme Court upheld California s Proposition 209, an amendment to the state constitution that banned both discrimination and affirmative action programs that give preferences to groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity, or national origin. To that end, race could not be used as a consideration (e.g., admissions and hiring decisions) in public education (Alvarez Bedolla, 2004). In addition, in Hopwood v. Texas (1996), the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decision ending affirmative action in both private and public college admissions in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. More litigation continued in 1997 (Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger) that challenged the use of affirmative action in undergraduate and law school admissions, and in 1998, Washington voters passed Initiative 200, a nearly identical policy to Prop. 209. In 1999, Florida Governor Jeb Bush pre issued an executive order ending consideration of race and ethnicity in public college and university admissions, public employment, and government contracting. Despite the fact that Paris was his birthplace, Claude only spent 5 years of his childhood there as he and his family moved to Le Havre, a port town in Normandy. Claude developed a love for art in his early childhood and was well known in his town for drawing caricatures of his community members. His mother was highly encouraged his talent whereas Claude s father wanted his son to become a businessman. Living in Le Havre, Claude had many opportunities to strengthen his talent such as meeting Eugene Boudin who was a local landscape artist and introduced Claude to landscape painting outdoors and set him on the track to his future success. In 1859 Claude moved back to Paris to pursue his career in art. During his time in Paris he was enrolled in the Academie Suisse and was influenced by the paintings of Barbizon School. Other great influences on his art were his friends Charles Gleyre, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Frederic Bazille as well as Johann Barthold Jongkind who was a well known landscape painter of the ... Disposable income Values of rubbish Overseas Factories Waste being sent overseas Seduced amp; Repressed Migrants Recycling Consumption Consumer society Explore the claim that a consumer society is always a throw away society. In this essay I will be outlining consumerism and claims that a consumer society is always a throw away society. Consumption plays a big part in our lives and causes us to live in divided societies. We often question how our food and clothes can be sold so cheap, this all comes down to where it is made or grown. Our clothes are made overseas in factories by women and in some cases even children in unsuitable conditions. They work long hours and don t get paid much in return, it is said to be less than what they can afford to live on and made to work extra hours. This is why large stores like Primark and Asda can sell their clothes at such little cost. Some of the workers are said to be working 60 to 90 hours every week for as little as £17 per month. (Making social lives pg.88) The workers in the factories are grateful for their small wage and would struggle if the factories were to close and business was took elsewhere. The growth of consumption has caused a large increase in rubbish. This is due to people having more choice when out shopping. Many years ago women stayed at home and men went to work but now that both men and women are out earning there is a lot more disposable income which ends with people buying luxuries and upgrading items they already have. This results in the old ones being thrown away. People are constantly upgrading and renewing items to better models. Mobile phones bring out new models every year which people feel the need to buy to keep up with the trend and because they want the newest gadgets on the street. Pcs have changed to laptops which gives the pc no home except out to be collected on bin day. This causes a problem

  • 46. The Monkey s Paw by W.W. Jacobs Would you want three wishes to be granted to you? You probably said yes, but have you ever thought of anything that could go wrong with your three wishes? In W.W. Jacobs, The Monkey s Paw , the story is about the White family who received a monkey s paw that allows three wishes to be made. They find out that this monkey s paw is one big troublemaker that causes havoc and unrest. Overall, The Monkey s Paw , had very distinct and believable characters and a great plot that was fraught with danger and suspense. One element I like in The Monkey s Paw was it had very distinct characters. For instance, Mrs. White s unawareness of what s going to happen really contributes to the outcome of the story. If it weren t for Mrs. White s naïve and unwary personality, the book probably would have been different as this quote suggests. Wish! she cried in a strong voice. It s foolish and wicked, said Mr. White. Wish! repeated his wife. (192) When she had forced Mr. White to make this wish she did not know that Herbert would come back as an undead corpse. Every mom wants her kid, but she did not realize that bringing her son would make things even worst. Along with Mrs. White s unwariness, Mr. White s interest in the paw without a doubt contributes to the developing story. I deem that Mr. White paid no attention to the warnings Sergeant Morris conveyed. Pitch it in the fire like a sensible man said Morris. Mr. White shook his head and examined his new possession closely. How ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ifrs Applicable in Bangladesh Executive Summary The adoption of IFRS around the world is occurring rapidly to bring about accounting quality improvement through a uniform set of standards for financial reporting. However, accounting quality is a function of the firm s overall institutional setting, including the legal and political system of the country in which the firm resides. This paper documents the prospects of IFRS adoption and their impact on the financial reporting environment of Bangladesh considering the underlying institutional and economic factors. It argues about trade off between the scale advantage of IFRSs (designed globally by the highly sophisticated authority) and the local advantage of decentralized adaptation. Despite the difficult process Anderson (1993) said a set of international accounting standards will allow new horizons of evolution due to the fact that comparative analysis of the rates of returns established based on the balance sheets and profit and loss account between the companies being in competition become relevant . The comparison, as the basic form of economical judgment can be realized only if the accounting system is unique for all the companies involved in the analysis. Also harmonization is absolutely necessary because national standards of financial statements are virtually useless; financial markets in more regulated countries are threatened with a loss of market share; and multinational corporations must prepare multiple reports for different nations they do business in. (Nobes and Parker 1991). In order to accomplish this target the accounting profession developed the solutions like: the American solution GAAP or the European solution (British solution to be read) IAS/IFRS. On the backdrop of getting a single set of international accounting standards (since October 2002, the IASB and FASB have been working systematically toward convergence of IFRS and U.S. GAAP), IFRS is rapidly gaining acceptance as over 100 countries have recently moved to IFRS reporting or decided to require the use of ... • 51. Child Abuse Is A Social Problem Essay Child abuse is a social problem that continuously produces a wave of concern. The State of New Jersey Department of Children and Families explains that Abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional harm or risk of harm to another child under the age of 18 caused by a parent or other person who acts as a caregiver for the child (2016). The harsh reality of child abuse and its consequences is recognized throughout this essay. The cost of child abuse can be understood through direct and indirect costs. Direct costs describe those of the child welfare system, judicial and law enforcement, health and mental health systems (New Jersey Child Assault Prevention, 2015). Comparatively, indirect costs apply to much more long term problems/a turn of events the child victim and their abuser(s) may have. These costs involve the effects abuse has or may have in regards to education, mental health, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, welfare dependency, domestic violence, homelessness, juvenile delinquency and adult criminality (New Jersey Child Assault Prevention, 2015). It costs a substantial amount of money to deal with child abuse. Moving away from these consequences, it is arguable that children exposed to violence or abuse, if left unaddressed or ignored, are at an increased risk for emotional and behavioral problems in the future.
