Cupcakes originated in the late 18th century when they were first mentioned in a cookbook from 1796 called "American Cookery" and were referred to as "Number cakes". They made their first appearance in America in the 19th century and have since become popular treats. Cupcakes can be made either easily from a boxed cake mix or with more effort by mixing homemade ingredients from scratch and baking in cupcake liners for 10-12 minutes at 350°F before decorating with icing.
