It can be a major challenge to work in multicultural environments where your clients’ organizations have values, beliefs and certain conventions that are distinctly different from yours.
An organization’s culture is driven by the values throughout that organization. Quite often, decisions in organizations are based on the strong values among its members. To help your employees or clients make meaningful decisions and to understand decisions that they may have made already it is extremely important that you have some understanding of the culture and values of other groups or organizations.
Cross cultural communication refers to the communication between people who have differences in any one of the following: styles of working, age, nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Cross cultural communication can also refer to the attempts that are made to exchange, negotiate and mediate cultural differences by means of language, gestures and body language. It is how people belonging to different cultures communicate with each other.
This presentation features a scenario about top managers who have a cultural misunderstanding. Displaying the cultural competency behaviors of active listening, empathy, and effective engagement can help us to create a welcoming environment and establish the appreciation of similarities and differences among cultures.
Cultural competence is the ability of a person to effectively interact, work, and develop meaningful relationships with people of various cultural backgrounds. Cultural background can include the beliefs, customs, and behaviors of people from various groups. Gaining cultural competence is a lifelong process of increasing self-awareness, developing social skills and behaviors around diversity, and gaining the ability to advocate for others. It goes beyond tolerance, which implies that one is simply willing to overlook differences. Instead, it includes recognizing and respecting diversity through our words and actions in all contexts.
Why Is Cultural Competence Important?
Demographic shifts and an increasingly diverse population
The United States has always had an ethnically diverse population, including African Americans, Native Americans, and Japanese Americans, to name a few. In recent years, our country has undergone dramatic shifts in its population, particularly as rapid migration has changed its landscape. For example, the Hispanic population in the U.S. rose from approximately 12.5 percent in 1990 to over 16 percent by 2009, and is anticipated to comprise 25 percent of the population by 2050. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by 2043, the U.S. will become a “majority minority” country. This means that although the non-Hispanic white population will still be the biggest group, a single group will no longer make up the majority. More than 50 percent of the population will identify as belonging to an ethnic minority group or any group other than non-Hispanic white.
In other words, although we have always lived in an ethnically diverse society, we are all operating in an increasingly culturally diverse environment where we need to be able to interact, communicate, build relationships, and work effectively with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Moreover, those of us working with youth need to prepare them to operate in a society that will be even more diverse in terms of religion, ethnic background, and sexual orientation.

Language Decoded is a project that is meant to make individuals think before they speak. It is an inclusive language glossary that we hope all can learn from.
This glossary is intended to empower anyone who reads it. It symbolizes the stories of all of the people, experiences, and perspectives that exist, and encourages us to be more mindful of how we choose to convey ourselves. By opening up to new ways of understanding the world,
we become strengthened through unity. Adopting an inclusive vocabulary promotes others to accept, embrace, and celebrate our differences, and acts as a catalyst for more meaningful changes to take place.
This tool was envisioned to be used as a guide that provides valuable history and context, and was not produced to shame, belittle, or otherwise dictate one’s self-expression. Due to its ever-changing nature, language selection will rarely be a black or white issue. However, we are certain that with the right awareness, intentions, and alternatives, that we can all engage in discussions that treat others with respect and dignity. While the knowledge contained within this glossary encompasses many topics, we also recognize that there may be additional words or phrases missing from our list. Please use this as a prompt for further discussion within your own lives about the intricate and multifaceted power of language, and how we can all work together to generate positive change.
This project was started by Canadian Cultural Mosaic Foundation with a collaborative approach. We worked with a group of diverse organizations and individuals that share a passion for inclusion and justice. We wanted to develop a resource that reflects the growth of our society and represents all of our unique community members. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
Participants are asked to create their own personal map by writing their names on top of their paper and then identifying and listing all the "communities" that they identify with. For example, some may identify themselves as certified people, and others as Irish Americans, women, ex-Catholics, step-mothers, college professors, pet owners, environmentalists, Democrats, runners, and so on. It often helps if the facilitator shows a pre-written example of his or her own map, so the participants understand what is expected of them. Once participants finish their maps, students should be provided with time to walk around and view other participants' maps. Once all participants have had time to examine all the maps, the following questions can help to facilitate the discussion: € What did you learn about others that you didn't already know? € Did you find that you were similar to others in ways that surprised you? € Did you find that you were different from people that you thought were the same as you? € How many of the listed characteristics about a person would you have been able to tell by merely looking at them? € What are the implications of this activity when working with multicultural populations? The ensuing discussion of the above questions will compel people to engage in a face-to-face discussion of their preconceived feelings about other groups of people. Bringing these feelings out in the open can defuse anxieties that one person may have about others, and hopefully will increase his or her comfort level with people from different backgrounds.
A stereotype is a preconceived judgment about an entire group of people, where all are believed to have the same characteristics. A stereotype often clouds the judgment of a person, preventing him or her from seeing the youth as a person with individual characteristics. For example, if a person is perceived as being an alcoholic, one might believe he or she is less trustworthy, less ambitious, or good for nothing. But what about stereotypes that appear to be positive, such as the stereotype that all African Americans are good athletes? If one assumes that all African Americans are naturally athletic, then the athletic trainer may overlook the possibility that an extra flexibility or strength training program would improve the performance of an African American athlete. The bottom line is that all stereotypes are negative, even if they have a positive connotation. Stereotyping is also dangerous because if often leads to prejudice. Prejudice is an attitude, feeling, or pre-judgment that often results in negative action against members of a group. To help debunk the merit of stereotypes, an analogy of a beach often clears things up. Think of the number of grains of sand on a beach. There are billions of grains. Stereotypes may have a grain of truth to them, but one grain is nothing compared to the billions of grains of sand that make up a beach.
