Definition of Cultural Diversity
• Culture shapes people’s identity
and behaviors.
• Culture guides the people’s way
of life.
• Culture promotes shared social
norms.
• The US has a diverse culture that
• comprises whites, African
Americans, Hispanics,
American Indians, among
others (Lin, 2020).
What it Means Being Culturally
Diverse
• Cultural diversity or multiculturalism is a system of behaviors
and beliefs that promote the inclusion of diverse groups.
• Being culturally diverse values and acknowledges the socio-
cultural variations.
• A well-developed cultural diversity helps to empower and
strengthen people to maximize their skills.
• Culture serves as the lens of judging proper and improper
norms in society (Partnership International, 2016).
• People use their culture as the standard for judging other
cultures and can lead to discrimination.
Why Cultural Diversity is Good
• The workplaces and the entire country are made up of different
racial groups.
• Understanding cultural diversity helps people learn about each
other and increase cooperation.
• Knowledge of other cultures helps to dispel personal bias and
negative stereotypes (Unesco, 2009).
• Cultural diversity encourages respect, healthy interaction and
makes the country interesting to live in.
• The power of cultural diversity encourages the power of being.
How Individuals can Support
Multiculturalism
• Increasing the level of understanding about other
cultural groups.
• Avoid own compelling values on others and
encourage active listening.
• Avoid associating English proficiency with intellectual
level (Kerwin, 2010).
• Encourage use of materials that support cultural
diversity.
• Promote cultural sensitivity in the society.
Importance of Cultural Awareness Adults’
Educators - Cultural Awareness in Adult Education
• It helps the educators and learners to
appreciate different cultural
backgrounds.
• Promotes respect, acceptance, and
• professional relationship (Rhodes,
2015).
• Boosts open-mindedness to diverse
ideas.
• Helps to adapt to new environments
and
• improve communication.
• It helps to validate all cultures and
observe sensitivity.
Types of Cultural Diversity Adult
Educators Need to be Aware of
● Race
● Ethnicity
● Religion
● Language
● Economic
● LGBTQ
How can Educators Foster Cultural
Sensitivity and Awareness?
• Show interest in
diversity.
• Be sensitive to cultural
differences.
• Make the curriculum
culturally inclusive
(Biniecki and Kang,
2014).
• Keep the expectations
of all students high.
Benefits of Cultural Awareness in
Adult Education
• Enhancement of critical thinking and cognitive
skills (Scoop Team, 2021).
• Promotion of creativity.
• Educators learn about the cultural
backgrounds of the students.
• The creation of a learning environment that is
culturally responsive.
• Students learn better about their different
community heritages.
STRATEGIES FOR AVOIDING BIAS
AND PREJUDICE IN INSTRUCTION
ACCEPT THAT WE ALL HAVE
UNCONSCIOUS BIASES
• Accept that you are not color blind, no one is. There are various common
mindsets that adult educators aren’t even aware of and these are rooted in
biased beliefs.
• Educator Gail Thompson recommends that all adult educators do what she calls
a “checkup from the neck up.”
• Ask yourself these questions:
• Do I truly believe that all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or
socioeconomic background, are capable of being academically
successful?
• Do I have beliefs about their home lives or community that prevent me from
seeing their academic potential?
• Do I treat students how I want my own children to be treated by their
teacher?
MONITOR YOUR OWN BEHAVIOR
• Question your first impressions and extreme reactions to people and reflect on
any rapid decisions you make.
• Examples: were they made objectively or was unconscious bias at play?
Also pay attention to bias that are related to protected characteristics
• Age
• Disability
• Sex
• Maternity
• Race
• Religion
• All of these things are discrimination and also illegal!
Skills for demonstrating cultural
sensitivity in a learning environment
Create a Culturally Sensitive Classroom
• Get to know individual students
• Curriculum is culturally appropriate
• Be aware of cultural biases
• Seek help and support from family and community
• Incorporate authentic work or cultural project
COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR
INTERACTING WITH DIVERSE LEARNERS
DEMONSTRATION OF HIGH
EXPECTATIONS
• Beliefs and Values
• High level, open ended questions that requires them to interpret ,
analyze, synthesize, and evaluate.
• G-Getting Along Compromising
• R-Respect the teammates and each other
• O-Offer your ideas and feedback
• U- Use a Plan
• P-Participate
• S- Stay Positive
IMPLEMENTATION OF CULTURALLY
RELEVANT INSTRUCTION
ETHNIC-BASED PROGRAMMING
• The Introduction of Technology has raised a wide
range of legal and ethical issues that are distinctive
to the 21st century when it comes to adults and their
learning in the new modern day era.
• By Having ethical policies in place, it helps to
promote learning at the highest level , and ensures
that the student is maintain academic integrity
Strategies for promoting acceptance and
respect in the learning environment
Respecting and accepting
adults is one of the important
steps in developing a positive
diverse learning environment
while promoting positive
attitude in the classroom.
Acceptance is an important factor in the classroom and highlight value and
characteristic of who you are and your core value. In addition, acceptance
require empathy and understanding that all humans are equal.

Editor's Notes

  1. Culture plays a vital role in shaping people’s identities and influencing their behaviors. Culture guides the people's way of life by the language they speak, racial identification, ethnic identity, as well as their religion, and the different holidays that they celebrate (Lin, 2020). Culture also involves the shared social norms such as the beliefs, material objects, and values highly regarded in the society. The US has a diverse culture that consists of white as the majority. The Hispanic, African American, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and American Indian are the minorities.
