Editor's Notes
Culture plays a vital role in shaping people’s identities and influencing their behaviors. Culture guides the people's way of life by the language they speak, racial identification, ethnic identity, as well as their religion, and the different holidays that they celebrate (Lin, 2020). Culture also involves the shared social norms such as the beliefs, material objects, and values highly regarded in the society. The US has a diverse culture that consists of white as the majority. The Hispanic, African American, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and American Indian are the minorities. Every race comprises various ethnic groups that are formed by people that have closely related characteristics. The US has many different ethnic groups due to the increasing immigrant population. Each one of those groups contributes to the country's cultural diversity and heritage. As one of the most diverse countries globally the US enjoys diverse workforces in the organizations.
Cultural diversity is also referred to as multiculturalism. Cultural diversity can be defined as a system of behaviors and beliefs that identify and respect the inclusion of diverse groups within an organization or society. Being culturally diverse values and acknowledges the socio-cultural variations that promote the continued contribution of all groups without discrimination (Partnership International, 2016). Having a well-developed cultural diversity helps to empower the staff and create a culturally inclusive context. Valuing and empowering groups bolster people to capitalize on their skills and abilities in the organization to achieve maximum potential without the effect of biases. Acceptance of cultural diversity ensures that cultural differences are tolerated and celebrated to enhance harmony and unity. Culture serves as the lens that helps people examine all things around them and determine what is proper or improper. People may become disoriented or experience cultural shock when immersed in a culture different from their own. In most cases, individuals naturally utilize their specific culture as the main standard for judging other cultures. Judging other cultures is wrong as it marks the start of the discrimination process of things that appear strange and difficult to understand.
Cultural diversity is crucial because many schools, workplaces, and the entire country are made up of various ethnic, cultural, and racial groups. Understanding cultural diversity helps people learn about each other and enhance their level of cooperation and collaboration between them. Knowledge of other cultures also helps people understand the various perspectives in the society and enable them to dismiss personal biases and negative stereotypes that affect group unity (Unesco, 2009). Besides, cultural diversity helps individuals respect the way of life of other people and encourage healthy interaction. This builds trust and respect across the different cultures. Moreover, cultural diversity makes the organization and country more interesting as the individuals from diverse cultures contribute new knowledge, different experiences and skills, and a new mode of thinking. The power of cultural diversity encourages people to be motivated by the ‘ways of being’ that differ from other ethnic groups and foster growth of acceptance and equality.
People must increase their level of understanding towards other cultural groups through frequent interaction with individuals outside one’s culture. This can help in establishing meaningful relationships and avoid misunderstandings. People should also avoid forcing values on others as this can cause conflicts. They need to be proactive listeners and welcoming to different ideas and people from other cultures. Whenever interacting with people non-proficient in English, it is vital to recognize that their language limits do not reflect intellectual abilities (Kerwin, 2010). Organizations and society must advocate using materials that fit all cultural groups, particularly in educational, clinical, and workplace settings. This will ensure that all cultural groups in the society are represented. Everyone should promote cultural sensitivity in the country and intervene when people engage in a way that promotes stereotypes. Different concepts such as emotional well-being, family roles, and spirituality should be respected, among other cultural behaviors.
Cultural awareness enables the learners and educators to appreciate various diversities and recognize diverse cultural backgrounds shape their values. It helps educators understand what may be accepted in one culture may be a cultural issue in the other society. For that reason, educators need to be respectful establish a professional relationship with their learners. Trust enhances acceptance of an individual’s rights, feelings, and opinions and enables the involved people to gain from multiculturalism (Rhodes, 2015). Besides, cultural awareness boosts open-mindedness as the student interacts and exchanges various ideas. Being aware of cultural diversity is critical as it helps the teachers and students to adapt to new environments and feel comfortable and safe. It improves communication between educators and learners by choosing the right words and texts that will not hurt the students to create an inclusivity atmosphere. Cultural awareness in adult education is vital as it helps to validate all the cultures and discuss matters related to other cultural groups with sensitivity. Teachers should explain academic matters unbiased to allow the learners to enjoy an equitable experience in class.
Adult educators should recognize how skin color has affected a wide range of American culture and how it can negatively affect students' perceptions and how they relate with each other in class. The educators should consider ethnicity, which results from nationality aspects and differences. The teachers should know that some of the adult students they are dealing with are immigrant groups. Thus it is vital to consider their interests. Understanding that adult learners engage in different ways of worship, and some do not will help to plan the learning process better. Adult educators need to familiarize themselves with religious requirements and traditions as these interfere with the behaviors of the students (Johnson and Owen, 2013). Besides, adult educators should be aware that language can limit education if not properly handled. Although the educators cannot use all the languages, they should be willing to assist adult learners who use English as a second language to be comfortable in the presence of other students. Besides, adult educators must be aware of the economic pressures that students could be facing that can lead to poor concentration in the classroom. Also, the educators should be sensitive to the sexual orientation and gender identity of the student. This should not be allowed to become a conflicting issue in the classroom.
Adult educators can foster cultural sensitivity and awareness by showing a high level of interest in diversity. The educators should design a classroom that promotes cultural diversity and engages students to give personal stories related to cultural experiences. Throughout the learning process, the educators should be sensitive to cultural differences that may impact the students' learning habits (Biniecki and Kang, 2014). Teachers should avoid stereotypes and provide accommodations to all students. In addition, it is essential to make the curriculum culturally inclusive to capture the global perspectives. Ensuring that the curriculum focuses not only on Western culture will help ensure that the minority adult learners also feel important and their contributions wanted. Through cultural awareness, the adult educators will meet the high expectations of all the learners. The teachers should provide special accommodations for some students with special but all students should be aligned to the same educational expectations regardless of their cultural difference.
The consideration of diversity in a class by adult educators is crucial. It helps in enhancing critical thinking and cognitive skills. Also, it assists the adult learners to engage opinions and perspectives that supersede those formed early in life by friends and family members. Through cultural awareness in adult education, the students’ creativity is boosted. Adult educators use diversity to encourage new ideas and transform the thinking process of the students to develop innovative and unique solutions to problems (Scoop Team, 2021). Cultural diversity integrates different perspectives, which improve the learning process and performance. In addition, cultural awareness enables thee, adult educators, to learn about the various cultural backgrounds of the students. The educators should know their students better and discover viewpoints and perspectives towards the world and the learning process. Also, being culturally sensitive enables educators to create a culturally responsive environment to support learning and promote cultural diversity by convincing them they have similar traits inside. The teachers should run fostered class that guides the students to understand and respects culture that differs from their own. Moreover, educators can encourage the students to learn better about different community traditions. They can facilitate sharing of community histories to discover unique cultural practices.
Cultural sensitivity has many meaning for example cultural differences and similarities exists among people without assigning a value. It is important to keep in mind that cultural differences and similarities exist among people and affect their values, learning and behavior. In addition, there are many strategies and skills that enable you to understand and learn about people whose cultural background does not match you.
Educator should build a rapport with students to understand their unique backgrounds. Students skills and experiences can promote classroom culture. Take time to understand students value, strengths, and needs. Engaging with students in conversations, by surveys, or questions with improve background knowledge on student culture.
Incorporating culturally based lesson and projects may provide connection to their unique identities and personal interests. In addition, this allow students to feel more comfortable opening up about their culture.
Another important strategy is avoiding cultural biases. This mean be very careful of how we operate in the classroom and being cautious with word choices and body language. According to the author, Reflect openly and honestly, and make efforts to correct any cultural biases you find (Sinkman, 2015).
The community and parent may also help with student culture and values. Visiting student community and learning their way and student population is helpful. In addition, it assist when creating lessons. There are many opportunity to build knowledge and create lessons to transcend cultural and communication barriers
Educational research directed at working with diverse learners is replete with studies identifying best practices for closing the achievement gaps that persist by race/ethnicity, socio-economics, language, and disability. The best practices may be categorized into four broad bands of strategies. Which are Demonstration of high expectations, Implementation of Culturally relevant instruction, and establishment of caring relationships, ethnic based programming.
By developing this skills , people become able to take responsibility for their own learning. Most of the adult learners models have been based on the work of Malcolm Knowles. Diversity in education is extremely important because it creates a success- oriented , cooperative and caring environment.
This area recognizes the importance of including students cultural references in all the aspects of learning. When it comes to cultural and traditional the cultural side of it helps individual to think critically.
Adult education has only recently begun to consider the role of ethics an its relationship to practice. Adults tends to make decision on how the believe things needs to be done. Clearly ethics are an integral part of adult education practice. These are some ethical practice in adult learners. Self-examination. The starting point for understanding the
ethics of practice is found in personal value systems but these
must be articulated. Writing down and reflecting on one's
personal philosophy of adult education is a helpful process for
helping clarify personal beliefs.
--Reflect on ethics in practice. Finding time for personal and
group reflection on ethical issues is important because it helps
uncover ethical dilemmas and resolve conflicts before they arise.
--Examine the practices of other professions. Learning how other
professions deal with ethical dilemmas can lead to more insights
about the ethics of adult education practice. Although this
approach may be helpful, Brockett warns against uncritical
adoption of practices that are incompatible with adult
education's philosophical approaches.
--Encourage and support a research agenda on ethics. Research

Respect is a character trait that is easy to recognize when it is present and equally easy to identify when it is absent.
