1. Provide loving, caring and a homely environment for children from broken homes, those who are
poor and need love, care and shelter
2. Provide a sense of self-worth for the children to lead productive lives
3. Provide basic education skills for those who are academically weak
4. Instill moral values and teach children to be responsible adults
5. Give them a new hope in life and restore the broken relationship with God
a t u r e o f o r g a n i z a t i o n .
Rumah Shalom is a foster home for underprivileged children who come from families with a difficult background. Founded in 1997, by several
individuals that were concerned for society, aimed to provide shelter whilst providing care and education for the unprivileged children. The founders
hopes to mould these children into responsible citizens of the future. Rumah Shalom strongly believes in achieving a vision of providing basic education
and develop moral values in them. On top of that, the home provides homely and commutable environment for the children to grow, live and be
nurtured in.
c c u p a n t s .
Rumah Shalom currently houses 22 children ranging for ages of 7-19 years old. The boys and girls are divided amongst two homes, one for the
boy and girls, which are supported by four staff members. The boys home located on the street of Jalan Tiong 1, Puchong Jaya, is a rented
house, whilst the girls house located in the same area on the street of Jalan Tiong 5, Puchong Jaya, is a landed property owned by the
organization itself. With this in mind, we had more opportunities to improve and alter the girls home compared to the boys home.
s o u r c e o f f u n d i n g .
Shalom Home consistently requires funds to cover their monthly budget, and, as such, they depend a lot on the generosity of the public. The
monthly income is RM25,000, that allows the organization care for the children. For example, feed, electricity, water, education, transport, rent,
etc.

In addition to that, some of the bathroom doors are broken and cannot be
closed properly. As the occupants do not have a proper facility to place
their toiletries, they simply place them, raising the concern of unhygienic
lifestyle.

Wall outside bathroom is slowly deteriorating by fungus
and algae growth due to excess exposure to sunlight
and rain.

Implement a new shading device that would not only
shade the wall, but also the corridor so the children are
able to use the bathrooms even when it’s raining.

The side porch is an area to function as an outdoor study, estimating to be -m2. To
accommodate the ten girls living in the house, the space given is smaller than the
minimum space for human comfort. The space is easily affected by rain as the extended
roof could only provide shade for a quarter of the area. The slight elevation of the porch
ground from the grass compound does not eliminate the issue of water flooding into the
study area during rain. The need for proper drainage arises in this context.

The tables that are stacked at the side were donated by local clubs and used as the
children’s study tables. Due to the lack of space, the children has to stack the tables
every time after use. Some of the tables are already damaged due to weathering and
exposure to water, deeming the tables unusable.
i t e i s s u e s a n d o b s e r v a t i o n .
Due to the roofing material to be made of aluminum zinc, the study area sustains heat.
This is also due to the direction of wind flow that is inaccessible as it doesn’t flow into the
compound. Thermal human comfort can not be achieved, causing the space to be
uncomfortable for use.

The edges of the tiles by the study area are chipping off making it a
hazard for children to walk on as it is not visible due to the growth of

s u g g e s t i o n .
Replace the individual tiles or create slope from tile to ground with
concrete to prevent chipping in the future.
i t e i s s u e s a n d o b s e r v a t i o n .
A small piece of land at the corner of the garden is currently not in
use. As such, items such as plastic containers and unused bricks are
stored there. According to the owner of the house, Pastor Arul, the
area is to be converted into a guest house to accommodate the staff of

Prone to flooding when heavy rain.
Lack of maintenance of garden, increases risks of pests such as mosquitoes and lizards.
Unsheltered areas have higher chance of rotting and weathering compared to shaded areas.
Safety of girls are jeopardized if doors are not fixed and in good condition.

An ice-breaking game with children to increase the bond
between us and them. The idea behind this is to remove that
uncomfortable feeling that the children have when around
us and not treat us like strangers but more like friends.
Activity 1: Hand-painting on long mahjong paper followed
by doodling on the resulting hand prints. The idea behind
this is to increase creativity of the children while being able
to brighten the interior of the study area when pinned up.
Activity 2: Create stencils that will be used as guides when
painting the wall that supports the shelving units. Brightens
the dull alleyway while protecting the wall from excessive
weathering and fungi growth.
