Rhema House provides shelter and care for 21 children ages 5 to 17. It was established in 1996 and is located in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. The home requires renovations and additions such as painting the fence, adding shoe racks and storage, and fixing drainage issues. A proposal was made to address these needs through donations of materials, volunteer labor, and fundraising.

Nature of the business
Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Rhema (PKKKR) is a welfare home for children and was formally
known as Pusat Rhema. It is an organization, which was established in 1996 for orphaned, homeless,
abandoned and destitute children of Malaysia with the purpose of providing shelter, clothes, food
and education to those children who are deprived such basic needs because of their dire
circumstances.
The house has a surface area of 10, 0000 square meters. It emerged at a time of unprecedented
development in policy, law and services for children. This provided a stimulating context and a
challenging opportunity for the home to contribute to thinking about, and provision for, children and
young people.

2. Occupants
There are 21 children in the home, with ages ranging from 5 till 17 years old. There are 3 full time
staff and 3 part time staff working in the home.
Source of funding of the organization
Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Rhema consistently requires funds to cover their monthly budget,
and, as such, they depend a lot on the generosity of the public. To help cover operating costs of the
home, Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Rhema conducts on-going recycling programmes in which
they collect worn clothings, recyclable items such as cans, papers and plastics to generate funds.

constantly filled with water, which encourages the growth of mosquitoes.

shoes, the space provided to place their shoes are insufficient as there isn’t a designated personal
space for each occupant to store their foot wears.

7. The image shows that there is insufficient storage space within the toilets of the home to allow the
occupants to place their toothbrushes and toothpastes.
The image shows that the toilets of the home do not have proper accessories to allow the occupants
to hang their towels or hand towels.
The image shows the conditions of the cupboards which were designated as bag storage area. The
cupboards are currently filled with other items and as such, the home requests for the construction
of a new bag storage furniture.

manner at the back of the home.

marker pens are stuck onto the boards permanently and require immediate treatment to remove
the marks.

9. Detail of proposal
Most of the images shown above in the “site pictures” section reflects the needs as well as issues of
Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Rhema which needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
1. the unfinished painting of the fencing wall located at the side of the garden, which has an area
of 37.4 meter square (2.2meters by 17 meters), requires a fresh new coat of paint to protect the
wall against the conditions of the weather as well as to beautify the boundaries of the home.
2. Pot holes are visible throughout the turf of the house. The pot holes are constantly filled with
water, which encourages the growth of mosquitoes and the spread of diseases, such as dengue.
To tackle this problem, we suggest that we remove the water contained within the pot holes
manually and to cover these pot holes using soil, which costs about RM 10. After covering the
holes using soil, the covering will be compacted to ensure that the soil will not run off due to the
heavy downpour of rain.

10. 3. As each occupant owns 3 pairs of shoes, the space provided to place their shoes are insufficient
as there isn’t a designated personal space for each occupant to store their foot wears. As such,
new shoe racks should be constructed for the 21 inhabitants. The show racks will be specially
designed to allow each individual to have his or her individual storage space to place 3 foot
wears. The show racks will be constructed using pallets as they are readily available. Wood
shields will be applied to the structure to protect the furniture against damage.

11. 4. Moreover, there is insufficient storage space within the toilets of the home to allow the
occupants to place their toothbrushes, toothpastes, towels as well as hand towels. To tackle the
problem, brush holder holders, toothpaste holders and towel hangers will be purchased and
install on the site.
5. In addition, conditions of the cupboards which were designated as bag storage areas are
unsatisfactory as the occupants do not have a designated space to allow them to organize their
bags in an organized manner. The cupboards are currently filled with other items and as such,
the home requests for the construction of a new bag storage furniture. Similar to the show racks,
pallets will be dismantled and reassembled to create the desired bag storage furniture. With the
completion of this furniture, the occupants, who are mainly students, will have the opportunity
to organize their bags and academic materials which will boost their concentration and mood
during their studies. Wood shields will be applied to the structure to protect the furniture against
damage.

12. 6. Moreover, the dirty conditions of the white boards available in the home disrupts the occupants’
usage of the furniture. The marks left by marker pens are stuck onto the boards permanently and
require immediate treatment to be removed. A simple solution to this problem is that thinner,
with a price of RM 30, will be applied onto the boards to clean and remove the stains present.
7. Finally, as requested by the authorities of the home, a simple badminton fence will be
constructed using tyres or PVC pipes to allow the occupants to enjoy their leisure times by
playing badminton. The badminton fence constructed will be lightweight to allow the occupants
to move the structure according to their needs.

13. 8. The recycle bins on the site is not labelled all the children treat the recycle bin as a rubbish
bin. Stickers will be pasted on each recycle bins to create awareness of recycle among young
children

15. Plastic watermark sticker
Plastic watermark stickers were required by our lecturers and tutors to be pasted on the constructed
objects which will be donated to Rhema Home. The reason for doing so is to allow the occupants of
Rhema Home to acknowledge and appreciate the effort and generosity of the people who made the
project a success, such as our group members as well as the respective sponsors.
The design of the watermark logo is in the form of a square which includes the logo of Taylor’s
University and the School of Architecture, Building and Design of Taylor’s University. The logos serve
to remind the occupants of Rhema Home that the donated objects were personally handled and
constructed by Taylor’s University architecture students. Moreover, the respective names of the
module as well as project name were also included to indicate that the project was initiated by the
Environmental Sustainable Design module. Last but not least, the respective names of sponsors were
included into the design of the watermark logo to allow the occupants of Rhema Home to appreciate
the generosity shown by them.
The designed logo will be printed using plastic. The reason for doing so is that plastic products are
waterproof and they are able to withstand water corrosion and is also stain-free. This will allow the
logo to be easily cleansed when dirtied and ensure that they are durable. Moreover, the plastic logos
will be able to withstand minimal degrees of wear and tear, making them long-lasting and
economical in the long run.
The watermark logos will be pasted onto the constructed shoe racks, bag organiser as well as the
painted fencing wall of Rhema Home.

17. Funding of project, source of fund and fund raising activities
The funds required to purchase the materials as well as tools will be donated by the group members’
relatives as well as generous donors such as organizations and businesses. Fund raising activities will
be conducted to raise more funds to cover the expenses of the project. Our group will contact bread
companies to sponsor breads for our group to sell. Booths will be opened near places with high
circulation of people, such as cyber cafes or golf clubs to allow the sales of the breads to be
completed in a shorter time frame.
Through our contact with one of the sponsors of Rhema Home, Mr Chong, is willing to sponsor in
total RM300 cash as the transportation of the installations.
One relative of our group member, Mr. Lee, is also willing to lend a hand in helping the occupants of
Rhema Home by allowing our group to use the carpentry tools and machineries at his carpentry
factory free of charge. Mr. Lee is also willing to share his knowledge in furniture making and to
supervise our progress to ensure that our work is on the right track.
