The East Africa Dairy Development Project aims to double household dairy incomes in 10 years through integrated interventions in dairy production, market access, and knowledge application targeting 179,000 families in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. A cornerstone is the "hub approach" of improved access to inputs, services, and milk markets through chilling plants and bulking centers. While gender was initially not a priority, a gender strategy was developed including appointing gender focal points and training staff. Over 36,000 women have been trained, exceeding targets, though mainstreaming gender earlier in project design would have been preferable.

The Social Enterprise Consortium is a partnership of 15 organizations working to improve health and wellbeing across the southwest of England. Through local delivery partners, it aims to reach 20,000 isolated, disadvantaged, or marginalized individuals and families, especially those over 50. To date, it has reached over 25,000 people with programs promoting healthier eating, increased physical activity, and improved mental health. It develops toolkits and resources for partners and manages projects and evaluations to achieve meaningful outcomes through shared learning and training.
Instructional design at ILRI: Working with the Feed Assessment Tool (FEAST)
Instructional design at ILRI aims to help learners rapidly acquire skills to further the organization's strategic goals. The ADDIE model is used: Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate. For the Feed Assessment Tool (FEAST), this involved analyzing goals like scaling training while maintaining research quality. Materials were designed like software guides, activities, and eLearning modules. Evaluation uses Kirkpatrick's model and measures outcomes like pre/post-test scores to assess success and need for revision. The project expects to meet 30-40% of the seed requirements of 10,000 farm families locally by 2017 and expand potato cultivation to non-traditional areas.

Dr. William Payne delivered a presentation on the highlights of the CRO on Dryland Systems at the Launch meeting in Amman in mid-May.
The Dry Areas of the world represent fragile ecosystems, which is to say areas with physical water scarcity, rapid natural resource degradation, groundwater depletion and drought. The prominent features of these, “dryland systems” are that they cover 41% of the earths surface, are home to 2.5 billion people – and the majority of the world’s poor, they have a youth skewed age distribution and 93% of the malnourished people in the world live in them. Consequently, the Dryland Systems CRP will target the poor and highly vulnerable populations of dry areas in developing countries and the agricultural systems on which they depend.
System level outcomes to be addressed by the CG system through CRP1.1 include reduced rural poverty, improved food security, better nutrition and health and the sustainable management of natural resources. Specific outputs have been set for each of the strategic research themes.
Target area selection criteria for SRT2 and SRT3 were chosen during the inception phase. They include the length of the growing period, distribution of poverty, malnutrition, aridity index, environmental risk, land degradation, market access and population density. The CRP will operate at multiple scales and in multiple disciplines from the microbial level to the watershed with 5 crosscutting themes; youth, gender, biodiversity, nutrition and capacity building.
Partnership is a crucial part of he conceptual framework, it is critical to outscaling and impact, it sets research priorities and action sites and partners are an explicit part of overall governance.

Over nine years, the CRS-led AIDSRelief consortium delivered HIV care and treatment through local partners in ten countries with over $700 million in PEPFAR funding. The program strengthened local health systems by building organizational and technical capacity through ongoing assessments, training, and accompaniment. As a result, partners sustained quality patient services, managed sub-grants, and over 30,000 participants were trained. Upon completion, 14 local partners in 8 countries secured direct PEPFAR funding to continue managing the programs.

Running Mixed Workloads on Kubernetes at IHME
The mission of the IHME is to apply rigorous measurement and analysis to help policy makers make better decisions on a range of health policy issues. Like other organizations, the IHME have embraced containers and micro-services aggressively to better support hundreds of collaborating researchers.
In addition to containerized workloads, the IHME run a wide-variety of traditional analytic, simulation and high-performance computing workloads on an HPC cluster with 15,000 cores and 13PB of storage. Researchers increasingly need to combine both containerized and non-containerized elements into workflow pipelines, and a key challenge has been ensuring SLAs for various departments and avoiding duplicate infrastructure and unnecessary data movement and duplication. In collaboration with industry partners, IHME have deployed a unique solution based on Univa’s Navops technology that allows them to combine containerized and traditional analytic and high-performance application workloads on a single shared Kubernetes cluster, ensuring departmental SLAs and helping contain infrastructure costs.
In this talk Dr. Grandison will discuss IHME, their experience deploying containerized applications and how they went about using Kubernetes to support a variety of new containerized applications as well as a variety of traditional analytic applications.

This study evaluated the impact of different levels of supplemental irrigation on olive productivity in Syria. The objectives were to enhance yields, minimize fluctuations, and increase water productivity. Treatments included rainfed (control), irrigating at 100% of crop water requirements (CWR), and 50% CWR. Results from 2012 showed that irrigation increased yields by 33-96% compared to rainfed. Applying 50% CWR increased yields over rainfed, with further gains from 100% CWR. Irrigation also improved water productivity and oil yields. Cost-benefit analysis found net profits were higher under irrigation. This study assessed the impact of switching from conventional flood irrigation to drip irrigation on fruit quality, oil yield, and oil composition of 36-year-old olive trees in Morocco. Five treatments were tested: flood irrigation, minimum or deep tillage with drip irrigation at 100% or 70% of crop water requirements. Results showed that highest yields and fruit weights were from deep tillage with deficit drip irrigation. Oil quality was generally improved with drip irrigation, shown by increased viscosity and stability. Sensory evaluation indicated oils from deficit drip irrigation expressed positive attributes more intensely. In conclusion, deficit drip irrigation improved olive fruit and oil quality over conventional flood irrigation.Achievements and Key Findings (Syria)

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.
