1. Crisis intervention involves short term help for those experiencing emotional distress from stressful situations that disrupt normal coping abilities. 2. A crisis can be developmental, situational, or adventitious. Assessment involves understanding the precipitating event and the individual's usual coping strengths and support systems. 3. The goal of crisis intervention is to reduce distress, help solve problems, and improve coping to resolve the crisis and return the individual to their pre-crisis level of functioning. Techniques include catharsis, clarification, and exploring solutions.
