CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION
Media Studies
How does your product use or challenge conventions
and how does it represent social groups or issues?
The social groups that are represented in my magazine are the
readers who are involved in day to day fashion which can be
both the younger generation as well as the middle aged.
My magazine would be read by people aged between 14 – 40.
People who are interested in fashion genre.
People who like to dress up and are concerned about their
beauty. (mainly the female gender)
The genre that I chose is women’s fashion, since I
myself have a lot of interest in knowing about the
present fashion talk. It’s important for women to
know about fashion.
One more reason for making a fashion magazine is that
more people like to buy fashion magazines instead of
food magazines or sports magazines.
Conventions
Front cover:
Main heading- The name of my magazine is ‘Glitz’ which basically
relates to something more glamorous or showy.
The font of the main heading is obviously supposed to big and bold
so that it stands out and attracts the eye of the reader.
A picture of my model- The age of my model reflects the age of my
target audience. The look that the model gives through the cover to
the reader is a way of communication with him or her. All the
accessories clothing items and shoes create a meaning.
Feature articles- are all the appealing things to the market which I
have chosen. This will encourage more and more people to buy the
magazine.
Contents
• Pictures- to give the reader a clear idea of the
genre.
These are the comments I got when I asked about my
content page:
“The pictures go well with the genre.”
“It gives a nice look to the content page.”
Page numbers- along with page numbers I also put
some interesting headings and further sub headings
to them.
Double spread- I used one picture on the double
spread the background was dark and the text
color was black and white which looked quite
appealing.
It’s important to use bold and large fonts on the
double spread as it has a lot of text on it and it
should be easy to read for the buyers.
How does your product engage with audience and how
would it be distributed as a real media text?
The reason why there should be a target
audience is that because the interests are
fulfilled.
It’s important to make the heading stand out
and the picture should be appealing to the
audience.
I also used some codes and conventions and
broke some being successful either ways)
How did your production skills develop
throughout this project?
Blogs- most importantly I learned to put
information on a blog. I have been working on
weebly and I found it very interesting to share
information there.
Research- A lot of research is required while
working on a magazine to make it the most
appealing and attractive one in the market.
I made an account on weebly which is a blogging
site and posted all my daily posts there as
assigned by my class teacher.
Secondly the camera that I used for the photoshoot
was nikon d3200 with a 55mm lens. I imported
the pictures to the computer and used the
software adobe photoshop cs3 to edit the picture
and make the magazine cover, content page and
the double spread of the magazine. I also used
powerpoint to make presentations such as this
one to post on the blog.
