A LEADER’S GUIDE TO WHY PEOPLE BEHAVE THE WAY THEY DO
To be autonomous means to act in accord with one’s self—it means feeling free and
volitional in one’s actions. When autonomous, people are fully willing to do what
they are doing, and they embrace the activity with a sense of interest and
commitment. Their actions emanate from their true sense of self, so they are being
authentic. In contrast, to be controlled means to act because one is being pressured.
When controlled, people act without a sense of personal endorsement. Their
behavior is not an expression of the self, for the self has been subjugated to the
controls. In this condition, people can reasonably be described as alienated.
—Edward Deci, Why We Do What We Do
Leaders influence people. Unless leaders understand why people behave the way they do,
their efforts to influence others will have random, perhaps unpredictable, even alienating effects.
You might try to influence someone and get just the opposite effect that you expected. For instance,
perhaps you have been trying to get a subordinate to do something at work, and no matter what you
do, she just won’t respond. On the other hand, maybe your boss has been asking you to do
something, and you resist. If you’ve ever asked yourself as a leader or a colleague, “Now why did
he do that?” you’ve wrestled with this problem. At home, at work, or at play, you have no doubt
observed people doing things that were, to you, unexpected or unusual. You may have seen two
people in very similar situations respond in very different ways. All of these incidents raise the
question, for leaders, of why people behave the way they do. This is a very complex subject about
which volumes have been and continue to be written. This chapter will introduce some
fundamentals about what motivates people, suggest under what conditions they will give their best
efforts, and then offer a summary framework that has proven pragmatic and powerful for leaders in a
variety of situations.
Some people resist this conversation by saying that you are being asked to be psychologists
rather than leaders. There is a difference. Both leaders and psychologists have to know something
about human behavior, and both are encouraging change. Leaders who resist understanding human
behavior focus at a very superficial level and simply command, “Do this!” or “Do that!”—cl ...

The Silent Epidemic of "Self-Estrangement" Among Today's Adolescents and Youn...James Tobin
A disturbing trend among children today is a an under-developed capacity to observe, identify and make use of one's own inner life and experiences in order to formulate a balanced self-concept and identity. Quite simply, children don't seem to "know" themselves. Associated qualities of this trend of "self-estrangement" is a loss of drive and motivation, lack of personal agency, poor interpersonal skills, distressed parent-child relationships, and a limited "capacity to be alone." In this article, I elaborate on these characteristics and also identity five specific personality types that are self-estranged and commonly present in clinical psychotherapy practice.
Teen Parent Relationship Boundaries - GenzanduGenZandu
Establishing boundaries in a parent-teen relationship is crucial for fostering mutual respect and understanding. These boundaries may encompass areas such as privacy, communication, curfews, and responsibilities. Open dialogue, empathy, and compromise are essential for setting and maintaining these boundaries effectively. By clearly defining expectations and respecting each other's autonomy, parents and teens can cultivate a healthy, supportive relationship that promotes growth and independence while ensuring safety and well-being.

Social Understanding, Peers, Media, and Schooling
This week addresses the development of social cognition, or how children come to understand their multifaceted social world. We will also learn about the importance of peer relations, television, computers, and schooling in child development.
Topics to be covered include:
· Stages in Social Understanding.
· Impact of Peer Relations, Media, and Schooling in Child Development
Development of Self-Awareness and Self-Concept
How do children come to understand their multidimensional social world? How do they think about and interpret their experiences with others? These questions address the concept of social cognition, thinking about characteristics of the self and other people. The first step in this development is self-awareness.
You may wonder when babies begin to recognize the concept of self. The development of self-awareness occurs in stages, with the first stage commencing at birth.
As language takes more of a role in the toddler’s interactions, self-awareness increases, as the toddler is now able to express the self in a more defined manner. Between 18 and 30 months, children begin to classify themselves and others on the basis of perceptually distinct attributes and behaviors, such as age, gender, size, and temperament. This is known as the categorical self. The remembered self encompasses a bigger picture as children rely on autobiographical memories to view themselves as continuously existing individuals. This type of awareness grows out of conversations and interactions with adults who can elaborate on past experiences. Finally, the concept of the enduring self is developed as preschoolers begin to discuss future events and begin to view themselves as persisting over time.

You may recall that newborns have the capacity for intermodal perception, or making sense of light, sound, tactile, odor, and taste information. As babies touch their toes, watch their arms move, and hear themselves cry, they begin to differentiate their own bodies from their surroundings. After feeling a particular object with their ...

The case study discusses the potential of drone delivery and the challenges that need to be addressed before it becomes widespread.
Key takeaways:
Drone delivery is in its early stages: Amazon's trial in the UK demonstrates the potential for faster deliveries, but it's still limited by regulations and technology.
Regulations are a major hurdle: Safety concerns around drone collisions with airplanes and people have led to restrictions on flight height and location.
Other challenges exist: Who will use drone delivery the most? Is it cost-effective compared to traditional delivery trucks?
Discussion questions:
Managerial challenges: Integrating drones requires planning for new infrastructure, training staff, and navigating regulations. There are also marketing and recruitment considerations specific to this technology.
External forces vary by country: Regulations, consumer acceptance, and infrastructure all differ between countries.
Demographics matter: Younger generations might be more receptive to drone delivery, while older populations might have concerns.
Stakeholders for Amazon: Customers, regulators, aviation authorities, and competitors are all stakeholders. Regulators likely hold the greatest influence as they determine the feasibility of drone delivery.

2. Grant Autonomy
By offering young people self-directed freedom and moral
independence, teenagers access an actionable level of
responsibility. Psychological studies have determined that the
more trust you place in someone, the more he/she will behave
in the way you’d like them to. Autonomy is a tool that
encourages a mind-shift and pushes young people to become
motivated change-makers.
3. Show Empathy
When someone feel misunderstood, they’ll rarely
try to be understanding. Empathy can be a
decided pathway to successfully reaching out to
misunderstood individuals, especially young
person. By putting yourself into the shoes of a
young person or being a good listener, you’re
demonstrating that you’re on their side.
But more than that you’re proving that you’re
willing to cry with them, laugh with them, and
celebrate with them, and they’ll understand the
importance of being empathetic & understanding.
4. Lead By Example
Young people don’t always listen, and the reason for
that isn’t psychological, but biological. Instead,
youth are more likely to imitate the behavior around
them. If they witness their parents striving for success
or attempting to stride toward glory, they’ll attempt
to do the same --mirroring and mimicking that
behavior.
5. Recognize Their Efforts
Validation and recognition are valuable to young
people and adults alike. It’s a priceless motivator
that pushes individuals to recognize their worth. If
a young person can’t see the impact of their
contribution, they’ll begin to ask, “why am I
contributing?” For that reason it’s important to
communicate with young people, informing them
of their importance --and it’s best to do this on a
one-on-one basis.
6. Identify the Purpose
Help a young person to understand incentive,
motivation, and purpose --that will be
instrumental for helping young people to
participate in community service, deal with
critical physical and psychological issues, cope
with depression, and identify a valuable
purpose.
