Lesson 1: Your work life (remote or otherwise) is
a series of spaces.
Physical
Virtual
Psychological
Individual
Collective
These spaces interact to make new ideas
either possible or improbable.
Lesson 2: How others interact with a corporate
environment lets new ideas in or keeps them out.
Consultants, futurists, evangelists, interns and visitors
can all contribute ideas that move in and out of a
business like a permeable barrier.
Lesson 3: Innovation work is not done
by innovative people.
The production of new ideas is not limited to a
particular ‘type’ of person.
There are good or bad conditions for those ideas to
be expressed openly.
Lesson 4: Ideas behind open source software
affect how innovation work
has been framed in the last 20 years.
From open innovation to week notes how we talk

a more precarious situation of under-investment
and mass closures of dedicated R&D work.

  • 3. Lesson 1: Your work life (remote or otherwise) is a series of spaces. Physical Virtual Psychological Individual Collective These spaces interact to make new ideas either possible or improbable.
  • 4. Lesson 2: How others interact with a corporate environment lets new ideas in or keeps them out. Consultants, futurists, evangelists, interns and visitors can all contribute ideas that move in and out of a business like a permeable barrier.
  • 5. Lesson 3: Innovation work is not done by innovative people. The production of new ideas is not limited to a particular ‘type’ of person. There are good or bad conditions for those ideas to be expressed openly.
  • 6. Lesson 4: Ideas behind open source software affect how innovation work has been framed in the last 20 years. From open innovation to week notes how we talk about innovation work in public hides a more precarious situation of under-investment and mass closures of dedicated R&D work.
  • 7. Lesson 5: Financial markets have deeply impacted innovation work, its framing, its presentation and its replicability. Venture capital and the startup economy have commodified the production of new ideas making it easier for a corporation to artificially recreate within its walls without actually disrupting its culture.
