WHAT IS A CRANKSHAFT ASSEMBLY?
Simply put, a crankshaft assembly is a component in
car engines that converts linear motion into rotary
motion. Through a series of connected components,
this motion then moves the vehicle’s wheels so that the
vehicle can move forward.
THE PARTS
There are many different types of crankshaft assemblies,
with differences varying from the number of pistons used to
the shape of the assembly as a whole. For this project we
have designed a very simple crankshaft, focusing on three
main parts:
- the Crankshaft
- the Connecting Rod & Pin
- the Piston

THE CONNECTING ROD & PIN
The connecting rod, as
its name implies,
connects the piston on
one end to the
crankshaft on the other.
It is held in place by
pins at either end.

THE PISTON
The purpose of the piston is to
transfer force from gas being
expanded inside the cylinder.
It pushes down on the head of
the piston, which in turn
pushes down the connecting
rod, thus allowing the
crankshaft to rotate, which
then turns gears in the engine.
