The CPU, or central processing unit, is the brain of the computer that performs all data processing and controls other parts. It contains at least one processor chip that can have multiple processing cores and operates at a clock speed measured in megahertz or gigahertz. The CPU fetches instructions from memory, decodes and executes them by performing calculations in its arithmetic logic unit and control unit, and stores results back in memory. It has registers for temporary storage and a memory unit for primary storage.

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.
It is the important part of any computer system.
It is also called as “brain of the computer”, ”central
processor”, “main processor” or simply “processor”.
The main tasks of a CPU are:
i. Perform all data processing operations.
ii. Store all type of data and results.
iii. Controls and coordinate every part of computer.

Dual-core processor: CPU with two processing cores .
Quad core processor: CPU with four processing cores.
Clock speed: rate at which a processor can complete a processing

CPU functions are primarily classified as:
1. FETCH: fetches every instructions from memory.
2. DECODE: convert the instructions into machine readable format.
3. EXECUTE: execute the instructions and perform calculations.
4. STORE: result after execution is stored in memory and given as
output.

8. Arithmetic logic unit (ALU)
ALU is divided into 2 units:
• Arithmetic Unit(AU)
• Logic Unit(LU)
Arithmetic unit performs all arithmetic operations like addition,
subtraction, division, multiplication.
Logic unit performs all logic operations like comparing,
selecting, matching, and merging of data.

9. Control unit (cu)
It controls the operations of all parts of the computer.
CU does not carry out any actual data processing operations
and does not store data.
Major functions of CU:
• Controls the transfer of data and instructions.
• Coordinates all units of computer.
• Fetch instructions from memory.
• Communicates with input-output devices.

10. MEMORY UNIT
Memory unit stores data, instructions and intermediate
results.
It is also known as “internal storage”, “primary storage”,
“RAM”, or “main memory”.
It gives data to other parts of computer.

11. REGISTERS
They are temporary storage areas inside CPU.
Also called as processor registers.
Registers may hold instructions, storage addresses, or any
other data.
Instructions may specify registers as part of the instruction.
