 Peer educators - tutors with additional training, assigned to
facilitate peer-assisted learning in the gatekeeper courses.
 Through faculty liaisons, works closely with faculty in the
department to identify the common learning needs for
students enrolled in those courses.
 New: 17.5 hours of paid mandatory tutor training
 Can’t start without first training
 Mentor sessions
 Continuing: 7.5 hours per semester + “advanced” option
 Think:
 What is good tutoring?
 What are the qualities of a good tutor?
 How can you support tutors so they develop those listed skills?
 Pair: Discuss answers with your neighbor.
 Share: Share out your or your partner’s answers.
 Participatory – Tutors are the ultimate guide to helping students
help themselves.
 Transferrable - Not subject experts (yet)… BUT… are experts at
learning, succeeding in classes.

Course-embedded Tutoring: Training & Support

  • 4.  Peer educators - tutors with additional training, assigned to facilitate peer-assisted learning in the gatekeeper courses.  Through faculty liaisons, works closely with faculty in the department to identify the common learning needs for students enrolled in those courses.  New: 17.5 hours of paid mandatory tutor training  Can’t start without first training  Mentor sessions  Continuing: 7.5 hours per semester + “advanced” option
  • 5.  Think:  What is good tutoring?  What are the qualities of a good tutor?  How can you support tutors so they develop those listed skills?  Pair: Discuss answers with your neighbor.  Share: Share out your or your partner’s answers.
  • 6.  Participatory – Tutors are the ultimate guide to helping students help themselves.  Transferrable - Not subject experts (yet)… BUT… are experts at learning, succeeding in classes.  Leadership – Role models for learning
