KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT FOR
ENVIRONMENT AND WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
Conducted in English
___________________________________________________________________
Background
Knowledge management has recently
attracted much attention towards
achieving sustainable water resource
management. Knowledge
Management comprises a range of
practices used by organisations to
identify, create, represent, and
distribute knowledge for productive
gain. Knowledge management is the
capabilities by which organization and
players within defined localities
capture the knowledge that is critical to
them, constantly improve it and make
it available in the most effective
manner to those who need it, so that
they can exploit it creatively to add
value as a normal part of their routine
work.
Proper management of water
resources - as a prerequisite of
sustainable development - includes the
ability to build and apply a water
knowledge management strategy, in
order to deliver demand driven
services and to accommodate
innovation. In the globalising
knowledge economy, proper water
management is much dependent on
the ability to develop, share, apply and
disseminate knowledge in an effective
and efficient way.
Water knowledge management is less
about the flow of water, but more
about the flow of knowledge (storage,
access, retrieval, re-use). Participants
learn to apply modern concepts of
water knowledge management
empowering them to contribute to
building an environment for improved
knowledge services.
Kenya water sector is endowed with
knowledge that is needed to be
captured shared, captured and
transferred. Although practiced,
knowledge management is not well
understood by organizations as they
are faced with the challenged on how
to create and implement knowledge
management practices as part of their
organizational strategy, leadership and
culture. Organizations do not engage
in measure of knowledge management
practices. This course targets at
developing a (first) knowledge
management action plan, to be
presented at the end of the course.
After the course the participants are
invited to keep in contact to share their
experiences with the implementation of
the action plan.
