This document provides a summary of several topics from the July 2014 issue of the WaterCap newsletter: 1) It discusses the challenges of implementing Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), including making theoretical IWRM policies effective in practice through gains in the productive sectors like agriculture, water supply, and sanitation. 2) It describes a recent training of trainers course on Water Safety Plans held in collaboration with the International Water Association, Ghana Water Company Limited, and Cap-Net to build capacity on developing and implementing Water Safety Plans. 3) It includes a spotlight on network member Dulo Simeon Otieno, a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi who discusses his role in

Message from the Network Manager
CHALLENGES TO IMPLEMENTING IWRM
IWRM is unquestionably one among major, probably the most significant initiatives towards sustainable man-
agement of water resources in our time. Since the Mar del Plata Conference, Argentina in 1977, IWRM con-
cepts remained focused on how best to ensure adequate supply of quality water to meet the socio-economic
needs; to increase water use efficiency; and to promote preparedness, nationally and internationally, so as to
avoid a water crisis in the future, and therefore IWRM can provide sustainable water security for every citizen
in the modern world. The major challenge of IWRM remains its effective implementation in the field; practical
implementation of the theoretically agreed-upon IWRM policies of Integrated Water Resources Management.
Effectiveness of IWRM will be realized by gains made in use of water in the productive sectors; agriculture,
water supply, sanitation, energy, tourism. Going forward WaterCap will devote greater effort to stimulate ca-
pacity for innovative technological and financial solutions in productive sectors and the ensuing benefits to un-
lock private talents/resources and develop community enterprises within tenets of efficient and sustainable
water use envisioned by IWRM. To start with during this month WaterCap together with partners will undertake
pilot exercise in Kajiado County in GIS and mobile applications for water resources data and knowledge man-
agement. It will be exciting to discover what potential mobile application hold for water resources management

Training of trainers in Water Safety Plans
The training was held by the International Water Association in
collaboration with Ghana Water Company Limited and Cap-Net.
Participants were drawn from Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Zambia,
Congo, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. The training aimed at building
capacity of country experts and local training institution on Wa-
ter Safety Plan and to provide continuous support to WSP de-
velopment and implementation. During the training participants
were given support on how to disseminate the technical content
on WSP. Participants observe that there is need for onsite prac-
tical learning of Water Safety planning especially in developing

2. The Ewaso-Ny’iro catchment extends from the high up-
lands of Mt Kenya, whose peak is 5,199 m above sea level
to the Lorian Swamp which is below 150 m .
Seasonal flooding of the swamp provides grazing land to
the pastoralists communities. Nonetheless, pastures that
depend on river floods might be lost as a result of up-
stream changes due to the drying-up point backtracking, pastoralist groups are moving
into neighboring territory resulting in conflict situations. Read More.......

I am a senior lecturer (Water Resources Engineering Associate) Institute for Climate
Change and Adaptation University of Nairobi. Currently, I am the National Chair of Hydro-
logical Society of Kenya
How long have you been a network member?
I am one of the founder members of WaterCap. I am also a founding member of the
NBCBN-RE, Nile-IWRM
How have you benefited from the network?
The main benefit I have acquired through joining the network is the vast sharing of experi-
ences in the Water resource Engineering and Catchment problems and the new methodol-
ogies of solving them. Further, my involvement of the network activities have positively
impacted on my career due to increased knowledge base and recognition among fellow
professionals.
How would you want to see the network develop?
With improved funding and communication among network members, I believe the net-
work will be a one stop window for professional resource tapping as well as problem solv-
ing towards enhancing sustainable water resource management
Water Dialogue The seventh water Dialogue was held on 25th June 2014 at Strath-
more Business School at 2.00 to 4.00 P.M. The topic discussed
was ‘Water Innovations and Entrepreneurship Research from Ken-
ya.
A long-term solution to reduce, reverse or mitigate the impact of climate
change is to make climate-smart innovations a development priority
in the water sector, particularly targeting water quality, quantity and
