This document describes the design of a rigid flange coupling. It consists of two flanges, one keyed to the driver shaft and the other to the driven shaft. Bolts and nuts are used to couple the flanges together. Design considerations include the diameter and key dimensions of the shafts, dimensions of the hub and flanges, number and diameter of bolts based on shaft diameter, and stress calculations. Rigid flange couplings are used to connect shafts, allow for some misalignment, reduce shock transmission, and transfer power between components.

2. RIGID FLANGE COUPLING

3. • It consist of two flanges one keyed to the driver
shaft and other to the driven shaft.
• One of the flange has projected portion and
other has a corresponding recess. This help to
bring two shafts in line and maintain the
alignment.
• The two flanges are coupled together by means
of bolts and nuts. The number of bolts used are
generally three, four or six. The two keys are
staggered at right angles along the circumference
of the shafts.
• The flanges made of cast iron ,cast steel or steel.

1) UNPROTECTED TYPE RIGID FLANGE COUPLING
2) PROTECTED TYPE RIGID FLANGE COUPLING
3) MARINE TYPE RIGID FLANGE COUPLING

11. USES
To provide for misalignment of the shafts or
to introduce mechanical flexibility.
To reduce the transmission of shock loads
from one shaft to another.
To introduce protection against overloads.
To connect driving and the driven par.
To transfer power one end to another
end.(ex: motor transfer power to pump
through coupling.
