3. What is a RIVET?
• A rivet is a round rod of circular cross-section. It
consists of two parts HEAD and SHANK.
Metals commonly used for rivets are Mild steel,
Wrought iron, copper and aluminum alloys etc.

4. “Riveting”
• Riveting was the standard method of joining
plates and structural parts before welding
began to replace it with increasing rapidity.
• Applications:
– Pressure Vessels and Boilers
– Hulls of ships
– Aero planes
– Cranes
7. Terminologies
• Pitch. It is the distance from the center of one rivet to the
center of the next rivet measured parallel to the seam as
shown in Fig. It is usually denoted by p.
• Transverse pitch. It is the perpendicular distance between
the center lines of the successive rows as shown in Fig. It is
usually denoted by pt.(aka back pitch pb )
• Diagonal pitch. It is the distance between the centers of
the rivets in adjacent rows of zigzag riveted joint as shown
in Fig. It is usually denoted by pd.
• Margin or marginal pitch. It is the distance between the
center of rivet hole to the nearest edge of the plate as
shown in Fig. It is usually denoted by m.
