The costumes in the music video shown in the top image show what some people might say
a stereotypical outfit for a male as they are in construction clothing. This ‘stereotypical’ outfit
is contrasted by the fact that Fifth Harmony are also wearing construction clothing. However,
they are dressed in a much more seductive manner than the males. It could be said that the
male characters in this video are being objectified and this is suggested by the fact that they
are dressed in very few clothes and the majority of them are topless. The fact that both the
band and the males are dressed in a seductive way shows that there is an aspect of the
male gaze which is on show but there is also something for the female audience to look at.
The way that the artists are dressed is common in music videos as they want to look good
for their audience. The male gaze is often used to attract a wider audience and make the
video bold to make people talk about it. Normally in a music video it is either one gender that
is represented sexually. However, in this music video, both genders are represented sexually
through costume. Costume allows for representation to become clear in video without having
to even listen to the words. You can often work out the object and the subject of the song
without having to listen to the song when the music video looks like this where one or both
genders are represented sexually.
Macklemore & Ryan
Lewis - Thrift Shop
The comedic effect that costume creates in this music video is done very
creatively in the way that everyone in the video is wearing bold and vibrant outfits
that are sold in thrift shops in America. In the song Macklemore lists the things he
has bought and continues to wear those things throughout the video. What is so
unique to this video is how easily relatable it is to the audience. Everyone can tell
stories about what they have bought from thrift shops and the deals they have got.
While watching this video the audience can look at the clothes that the people are
wearing and think to themselves that they once bought something like that.
Macklemore’s ability to create a song about something that is so relatable to every
day people is very unique and he compliments the song with an array of
questionable outfits that have been bought at a very cheap price. The large fur
coat that Macklemore wears is very symbolic and immediately establishes him as
the main character in the video. The fur coat is so noticeable and is often
represents wealth and importance although it is clear to see that in this video it is
used in a comedic manner and it is a bold item of clothing that he bought for
cheap.
Overall, this music video uses bold costumes to have a unique effect on the
audience as they can very much relate to the lyrics of the song and the clothes
they wear.
Drake - Started From
The Bottom
This song uses 3 main outfits to showcase Drake’s progression
throughout the years. These scale from the beginning of the video
where Drake is wearing his work clothes for a department store to the
highest fashion for rappers as he wears all black clothing with gold
chains. The outfits he wears suggest the point in life where he is at.
The 3 different costumes represent different things. The work clothes
represent a possible lower class as his work colleagues are all in the
same outfit. It also represents a lack of individuality as the same outfit
means that Drake cannot be himself in this controlled environment.
This heavily contrasts to the two other outfits where the outfits are
clearly chosen by himself as he is rich enough to wear what he wants
to wear. The gold chains are incredibly synonymous with rap artists
and this music video is no different as there are 2 occasions where
Drake is wearing gold chains to symbolise his wealth and importance.
The song tells the story of how Drake has progressed to where he is
now as well as what he experienced when he was at the bottom. His
outfits represent a different point in his life from when he had nothing to
where he is now one of the most successful artists in the world.

This ‘stereotypical’ outfit is contrasted by the fact that Fifth Harmony are also wearing construction clothing. However, they are dressed in a much more seductive manner than the males. It could be said that the male characters in this video are being objectified and this is suggested by the fact that they are dressed in very few clothes and the majority of them are topless. The fact that both the band and the males are dressed in a seductive way shows that there is an aspect of the male gaze which is on show but there is also something for the female audience to look at. The way that the artists are dressed is common in music videos as they want to look good for their audience. The male gaze is often used to attract a wider audience and make the video bold to make people talk about it. Normally in a music video it is either one gender that is represented sexually. However, in this music video, both genders are represented sexually through costume. Costume allows for representation to become clear in video without having to even listen to the words. You can often work out the object and the subject of the song without having to listen to the song when the music video looks like this where one or both genders are represented sexually.

In the song Macklemore lists the things he has bought and continues to wear those things throughout the video. What is so unique to this video is how easily relatable it is to the audience. Everyone can tell stories about what they have bought from thrift shops and the deals they have got. While watching this video the audience can look at the clothes that the people are wearing and think to themselves that they once bought something like that. Macklemore’s ability to create a song about something that is so relatable to every day people is very unique and he compliments the song with an array of questionable outfits that have been bought at a very cheap price. The large fur coat that Macklemore wears is very symbolic and immediately establishes him as the main character in the video. The fur coat is so noticeable and is often represents wealth and importance although it is clear to see that in this video it is used in a comedic manner and it is a bold item of clothing that he bought for cheap. Overall, this music video uses bold costumes to have a unique effect on the audience as they can very much relate to the lyrics of the song and the clothes they wear.

These scale from the beginning of the video where Drake is wearing his work clothes for a department store to the highest fashion for rappers as he wears all black clothing with gold chains. The outfits he wears suggest the point in life where he is at. The 3 different costumes represent different things. The work clothes represent a possible lower class as his work colleagues are all in the same outfit. It also represents a lack of individuality as the same outfit means that Drake cannot be himself in this controlled environment. This heavily contrasts to the two other outfits where the outfits are clearly chosen by himself as he is rich enough to wear what he wants to wear. The gold chains are incredibly synonymous with rap artists and this music video is no different as there are 2 occasions where Drake is wearing gold chains to symbolise his wealth and importance. The song tells the story of how Drake has progressed to where he is now as well as what he experienced when he was at the bottom. His outfits represent a different point in his life from when he had nothing to where he is now one of the most successful artists in the world.
