Introduction
I am going to analyse a music
video looking at the genre
and things that are included
in the video such as props
and Mise en scene. I have
chosen to analyse the music
video T:I, B.O.B and Kendrick
Lamar – Memories Back
Then as I have chosen this
genre based on the reasons
of enjoy to listen to it and
also find the song relates to
situations which happens in
life but it is told in a song.
Genre
The genre of this song by T:I which features other
song artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Kris Stephens
and B.O.B. They all have a completely different look
about each artists especially the males because
there are elements such as the costume. In this
video the costume is very distinctive as seen in the
screenshot below where he is wearing a vest and
also has a silver chain around his neck which is a
stereotypical item of clothing to be worn in a rap
video. Also in the other screenshot below we can
see that there is a pattern between the clothing
and that is the colour both the costumes he is
wearing are both black, which also fit the
conventions of a rap video as it is not seen as
normal to wear bright colours. Another factor that
tells you the genre is the performance of the artist
there are many occasions when he is looking into
the camera rapping this is a convention or the rap
genre and you can tell the genre just by watching
him.
Narrative
In the music video the narrative is based on three of
the rappers that are featured on the song and they all
explain what there past experiences with females
have been like before they got famous and when they
were a lot younger. It shows that they are now
successful in life and as they talk about there
experiences each rapper is different based on T:I
(Explaining his all time girl who used to do favours for
him and then moved onto be seeing another boy)
B.O.B ( How he had an argument with his girlfriend
and then called another girl up to a hotel to have sex
with her then got her pregnant and when she left him
after it turned out the baby wasn’t his) and finally
Kendrick ( How a girl chose another boy before him
when he was broke because the other male was
richer and now as he got older he has found out that
she has three kids with three different fathers. So you
can clearly see that the video is related to the lyrics of
the song and it matches the feeling of the
instrumental.
Setting and decor
The main setting in the music is two
main one which is in a city, park, hotel
room and streets and back alleys.
There are a variety of different
locations based on the fact that there
are three different rappers that have a
story to tell which means that there
will be a lot of different locations to
use and also a lot of different actors.
This also fits the generic conventions
of a rap video as they are often set in
streets and in rundown environments
alongside different expensive
locations which makes it feel towards
being poor to turning into a wealthy
individual.
Costume
There are typical conventions of a
rap video based on the costumes
being worn which are stereotypical
such as hoodies, baggy clothing,
adidas and also Nike. These are the
type of brands and clothing you
would expect to see in a rap video
based on the stereotypes of the
genre. The female artist wears a
different costume which changes
from casual, hip-hop and then
formal every chorus, in one of the
costumes she wears a Cuban link
chain which is also a classic hip hop
style jewellery which you would
expect to see in a music video of this
genre.
Props
There was barely any props being
shown except the backup actors
shown in the video acting out
situations based on the lyrics such
as showing a mixtape of Kendrick
Lamar with the girl looking at it and
left in shock as she cant believe it is
him. There was also a smartphone
being shown which was a good way
to show a rich enviroment, The
director wanted the audience to
gain a mutual feeling with the
rappers to understand there pain
and struggle they went through or
even relate to the actors in the
video.
Body language and movement
The main actors tend to show a mature
body language by the way they stand in a
position such as being calm and nice as
they are showing themselves in the
future. The mixed race female in the
black dress shows an arrogant personality
as she's walking down the bridge and
Kendrick does a complete different
attitude towards walking down the bridge
also.
Performance
This is the most important part of the
video as they are the main focus of the
whole video and in all the shots the
artists is always there. They have a
variety of younger actors to show a
representation of what the story
looked like to give the audience a kind
of vision based on allowing the
audience to gain an understanding
towards. The rappers themselves just
rhyme the words and are only seen to
just rap in the video except Kendrick
Lamar's verse which seems as if he is
walking down the street trying to gain
her attention until it gets to the part
where she betrays him which then
switches her to gain his attention
while he laughs and ignores her.
