Influence of cosmetics
“Wearing more makeup has been positively correlated
with women’s public self-consciousness”.
“Cosmetics allow women to feel better about themselves”.

Introduction
• According to D & C act 1940 and rule 1945,
“Cosmetic is defined as any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on, or introduced
into or otherwise applied to, the human body or any part therefore cleaning, beautifying, promoting
attractiveness or altering the appearance and includes any article intended for use as a component of
cosmetic”.
• Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or alter the appearance of the face or fragrance & texture
of the body.
• Many cosmetics are designed for the use of applying to the face, hair & body.
• Cosmetics applied to the face to enhance its appearance are often called make-up.
• Common make-up items such as-Lipstick, Mascara, Eye shadow, Foundation.
• Whereas other common cosmetics can include Skin cleansers & body lotions, Shampoo & conditioners,
Hairstyling products( gel, hairspray, wax etc.).
• They are generally mixtures of chemical compounds.
• Some derived from natural source’s
• Some being synthetic or artificial.
Regulatory body
• (CDSCO) Central drug standard control organization under DGCI (Drug controller
general of India) which comes under Ministry of Health & family welfare.
• Within the CDSCO, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) regulates
pharmaceutical and medical devices, under the gamut of Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare.
• The DCGI is advised by the Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) and the Drug
Consultative Committee (DCC).It is divided into zonal offices which do pre-licensing and
post-licensing inspections, post-market surveillance, and recalls when needed.
• Manufacturers who deal with the authority are required to name an Authorized Indian
Representative (AIR) to represent them in all dealings with the CDSCO in India.
• Though the CDSCO has a good track record with the World Health Organizations, it has
also been accused of past collusion with independent medical experts and pharmaceuticals
companies.
Functions
• Providing protection from harmful external factors.
(Environmental factors such as Heat & Low humidity, pollen & airborne allergens).
• Reduce harmful effects of UV radiation.
(causes erythema-skin redness, sun burn, photoaging).
• Regulate body temperature with blood supply.
• Prevent loss of internal moisture.
• Synthesizing vitamin D.
• Serving as a blood supply.
• Sensation
• Protection
• Storage

• Shampoos (Clear liquid shampoo, Liquid cream shampoo, Solid cream shampoo, Egg/Herbal/Oil
shampoo, Dry powder shampoo, Aerosol shampoo).

• Antiperspirant(gel formation-temporarily blocks sweat glands on skin-reduce the amount of
sweat)
• Deodorants

 Classified into three main categories-
1) According to their use.
2) According to their function.
3) According to their physical nature.

Use for the Skin:-

Powder
Lotion
Deodorants
Antiperspirants.
Use for the nails:-
Nail polish
Nail polish remover
Manicure preparations.
Classification-
• Use for teeth & mouth:- oral care products intended to cleanse the oral cavity freshen the breath
and maintain good oral hygiene.
Dentifrices-preparation meant to be applied to the teeth with a tooth brush for the purpose of cleaning the accessible surface of
teeth.
• Cleaning of tooth
• Polishing tooth root
• Removal of strains
• Reduction of mouth odour
Mouth washes.

• Protective function-Face powder( to minimize shininess caused by oily skin).

• Cakes:-rough compacts
• Emulsions:-vanishing cream, cleansing cream
• Oils:-hair oils

• Powder:-face powder, tooth powder
• Soaps:-shaving soap, toilet soap, shampoo soap.

  • 1. COSMETICS Presented By:- Ruchi pal M. Pharm(Pharmaceutics) CSJM University, Kanpur.

  • 3. Influence of cosmetics “Wearing more makeup has been positively correlated with women’s public self-consciousness”. “Cosmetics allow women to feel better about themselves”. “Self-esteem | Believe increases”. “Enhances social interaction”.
  • 4. Introduction • According to D & C act 1940 and rule 1945, “Cosmetic is defined as any article intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on, or introduced into or otherwise applied to, the human body or any part therefore cleaning, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance and includes any article intended for use as a component of cosmetic”. • Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or alter the appearance of the face or fragrance & texture of the body. • Many cosmetics are designed for the use of applying to the face, hair & body. • Cosmetics applied to the face to enhance its appearance are often called make-up. • Common make-up items such as-Lipstick, Mascara, Eye shadow, Foundation. • Whereas other common cosmetics can include Skin cleansers & body lotions, Shampoo & conditioners, Hairstyling products( gel, hairspray, wax etc.). • They are generally mixtures of chemical compounds. • Some derived from natural source’s • Some being synthetic or artificial.
  • 5. Regulatory body • (CDSCO) Central drug standard control organization under DGCI (Drug controller general of India) which comes under Ministry of Health & family welfare. • Within the CDSCO, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) regulates pharmaceutical and medical devices, under the gamut of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. • The DCGI is advised by the Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) and the Drug Consultative Committee (DCC).It is divided into zonal offices which do pre-licensing and post-licensing inspections, post-market surveillance, and recalls when needed. • Manufacturers who deal with the authority are required to name an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to represent them in all dealings with the CDSCO in India. • Though the CDSCO has a good track record with the World Health Organizations, it has also been accused of past collusion with independent medical experts and pharmaceuticals companies.
  • 6. Functions • Providing protection from harmful external factors. (Environmental factors such as Heat & Low humidity, pollen & airborne allergens). • Reduce harmful effects of UV radiation. (causes erythema-skin redness, sun burn, photoaging). • Regulate body temperature with blood supply. • Prevent loss of internal moisture. • Synthesizing vitamin D. • Serving as a blood supply. • Sensation • Protection • Storage

Types of Cosmetics Facial cosmetics- • Cleansing preparation • Skin nourishing(sun burn, sunscreen). • Skin toxic • Shaving cream • Make up( face mask, vanishing cream, powder, fairness cream). Hair cosmetics- • Hair dye • Hair oil • Hair creams • Hair gels • Antidandruff preparation • Hair removing creams • Shampoos (Clear liquid shampoo, Liquid cream shampoo, Solid cream shampoo, Egg/Herbal/Oil shampoo, Dry powder shampoo, Aerosol shampoo).

Types of cosmetics- Eye cosmetics- • Eye liners • Eye gloves • Kajal • Kohl • Contact lens • Eyebrow pencils. Dental & oral cavity cosmetics- • Tooth paste • Tooth powder • Mouth washes • Teeth whitening chewing gum. Antiperspirant & Deodorants- • Antiperspirant(gel formation-temporarily blocks sweat glands on skin-reduce the amount of sweat) • Deodorants

Classification of cosmetics  Classified into three main categories- 1) According to their use. 2) According to their function. 3) According to their physical nature. Cosmetics according to their use- Use for the Skin:- Cream Powder Lotion Deodorants Antiperspirants. Use for the nails:- Nail polish Nail polish remover Manicure preparations.

Classification- • Use for teeth & mouth:- oral care products intended to cleanse the oral cavity freshen the breath and maintain good oral hygiene. Dentifrices-preparation meant to be applied to the teeth with a tooth brush for the purpose of cleaning the accessible surface of teeth. • Cleaning of tooth • Polishing tooth root • Removal of strains • Reduction of mouth odour Mouth washes. • Use for the eye:- • Eye cream • Eye lashes • Eye liner • Use of hair:- • Shampoo • Hair removers • Hair dyes

Classification- Cosmetics according to their function:- • Curative or therapeutic function-Antiperspirant and hair preparations. • Protective function-Face powder( to minimize shininess caused by oily skin). • Corrective function-face powder • Decorative function-Lipstick, nail polish, eye lashes. Cosmetics according to their physical function:- • Aerosols:-hair perfumes • Cakes:-rough compacts • Emulsions:-vanishing cream, cleansing cream • Oils:-hair oils • Paste:-tooth paste, deodorant paste • Powder:-face powder, tooth powder • Soaps:-shaving soap, toilet soap, shampoo soap. • Stick:-Lipstick.
