In the short story, The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick, the symbol of the Shawl changes
over the course of the story. For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl
represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents
mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda s mother. Similarly, in the short story,
Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoessymbolize varying
ideas as the story develops. Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not
met, to own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore, represent a feeling of lacking.
Later in the story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes
begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories as
symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking
proper nourishment.
The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to
provide these same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, It was
a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three night . While the
shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa
feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial
necessities indirectly from the shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other
hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in
providing them with the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic
needs met.
Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of
nourishment. During her life, the shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa
to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no longer provides
sustenance. Ozick writes, Rosa drank Magda s shawl until it dried . The shawl
dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the
shawl possessed prior to Magda s death. The dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa s
lacking. Before Magda died Rosa s needs were met through Magda, however, now
that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs met. Although the shawl, initially,
symbolized Rosa receiving proper sustenance, once Magda dies the shawl symbolizes

of Pi. In the novel, Pi Patel, the main character, is stranded on a boat with a variety of
animals. Pi then relates his daily experiences with these animals throughout his

Based on a through reading and analysis of the novel, the use of anthropomorphism
is integral to Pi surviving his experience on the open water because it allows Pi to

INTRODUCTION
Clay bricks are used in a wide range of buildings from housing to factories, and in the
construction of tunnels, waterways, bridges etc. Their properties vary according to
the purpose for which they are intended, but clays have provided the basic material of
construction for centuries. Brick is the oldest manufactured building material, and
much of its history is lost in antiquity. The oldest burnt or fired bricks have been
found on the sites of the ancient cities of Babylonia, some of which are estimated to
be about 6000 years old. Brick is, after all, virtually indestructible. The industry
developed on traditional lines, using hand making processes for the most part. ...
Water can be added here or if it is a dry pan the clay is reduced to dust and water
added later. Further crushing takes place through conveyor rollers reducing the clay
particles to about 1 2mm.
FORMING THE BRICK SHAPE
Most bricks are formed by one of two basic processes.
Extrusion
The clay body is mixed to a fairly stiff texture and is then loaded into an extruder
where a worm screw pushes it along a barrel into a vacuum chamber which
compresses it through a taper and out through a die. The die is machined to a
precise size and shape larger than the finished size of the brick, calculating how
much the clay will shrink during the drying and firing process. The clay emerges
as a continuous brick shaped column. Initially this is smooth but it can be modified
by removing a thin sliver from the top and sides using a taught wire to produce a
wiredrag effect or by placing textured rollers over the column to create a rusticated
effect or even by blasting the column with sand. The clay column is then cut into
single bricks and palletised ready for the dryers or in some factories, are loaded
directly onto kiln cars. Extruded bricks are generally perforated and can be solid but
cannot be frogged.
