K12 Online Learning: What we Know Now -- SLATE Conference 2010Jeffrey Hunt
With online learning growing across the P-20 spectrum, this session will outline what we are learning about our online students and what they are telling us about their learning online. Indian Prairie offers several online courses for students to prepare them for future learning in higher education, the business world, or in the service to their country. The presentation includes results of demographic analysis of students and survey results of student learning.
LMS stands short for Learning Management System.
Learning, because you use it to deliver education courses or training programs.
Management, because it helps you organize these courses (create them, change them, assign them to students, grade them, etc).
System, is just a fancy word that translates to "software". An LMS is a computer program.
Just like Word helps in writing documents and Gmail helps in managing the emails, an LMS is a software program that helps create, manage and deliver eLearning courses.
An LMS is the "engine" that powers eLearning, and in the most common form it consists of two separate parts:
- A server component that performs the core functionality (creating, managing and delivering courses, authenticating users, serving data and notifications, etc.)
- A user interface that runs inside your browser as a web (like Gmail or Facebook), that is used by administrators, instructors and students .
“Don’t just give your students a lesson. Give them an experience.” (Alan Cohen).
There is growing attention and great interest in the next generation learner experience (NGLX)—how students interact with their ever-changing learning environment. Next-generation learning is about the WHOLESOME EXPERIENCE of learning that are rich, deep, meaningful and impactful.
NGLX is characterised by its highly personalised, flexible, interactive and engaging, relevant, authentic, organised around learner’s own progress and adaptive.
In this presentation, the speaker will share several game-changers and actionable strategies to achieve the wholesome (awesome) learning experience that is memorable and impactful.

Speaking in English confidently is a challenging task but very crucial for university students. Graduates with good communication efficiency especially in the engineering field are greatly demanded in the current work industry. Performing confidently is not only important for scoring academic tasks but also to help expand the revenue of the companies at workplace. Thus, a pilot study was conducted to investigate the perceptions of a public technical university engineering undergraduates’ confidence level in speaking English. A mixed method design was employed where a survey and semi-structured interview were conducted for data collection. The participants were selected using purposive sampling method where a total number of 50 undergraduates provided valid responses to the online questionnaire and 5 undergraduates participated in the semi-structured interview. Descriptive statistics using Statistical Package for the Social Science Version 25.0 (SPSS version 25.0) and thematic analysis were adopted for data analyses. The results revealed three main areas that were identified as important to build the students’ confidence in speaking: applying manual skills, familiarization of vocabulary and correct usage of grammar. The findings also highlighted that the participants felt that more public speaking practices should be provided to them to improve their confidence level further in speaking English fluently.

Reticence of Speaking in a Maldivian ESL Classroom Causes and Solutionijtsrd
Although teachers adopt various approaches in their teaching to improve the language skills of the students, reticent behaviour of the students in speaking lessons often frustrates teachers. Hence, the present study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the reticent behaviour of students in ESL classrooms, strategies used by Maldivian students to cope with speaking anxiety and how teachers attempt to alleviate the problem of reticence in ESL classroom. To fulfill this aim, the present paper addresses the following questions 1 what do Maldivian students and teachers notice as the factors contributing the reticence in speaking in ESL classrooms 2 What strategies do Maldivian learners use to cope with speaking anxiety 3 What strategies do Maldivian teachers adopt to effectively cope with student’s reticent behaviour of speaking in ESL class The data was taken from seven participants four teachers and three students through face to face interview. Further, classroom observations was done to gain more information about the behviour being studied. The research findings showed that different social psychological factors, fluency factors and cognitive factors make the learners to be reticent in ESL classroom. Furthermore, students employ various strategies, such as avoidance strategy, seeking help from friends, using mother tongue, writing and rehearsing what they want to say in order to cope with the problem of reticence. The findings also showed that teachers attempt to alleviate the problem by altering the teaching methods and building a stress free classroom environment for the students. Surprisingly, the results showed that teachers give less importance to speaking skill as it not tested in exam. Therefore, it is recommended to include speaking in when Maldivian students do IGCSE exam. THE STATE OF VIDEO
IN EDUCATION 2017
A Kaltura Report.
Video has become a major part of education, used in classrooms around the world. The
uniquely compelling nature of video, engaging multiple senses in an easy-to-understand,
information-dense format, has made it wildly popular in our daily lives. Through video,
we can join and share experiences around the world. We can broadcast an event live,
and capture it to be watched again and again. Video has become a major component of
our personal lives as well as a huge driver in the business world. Today’s students expect
to learn with the help of video, while prospective employers expect them to leave
education with the video skills necessary to participate in a digital culture. So it’s no
surprise that video plays a major role on campus.
This is not a role that’s being forced upon educators externally.
Video has proven to be a massively powerful tool, helping improve comprehension,
retention, discovery, and accessibility. It’s not limited to the classroom, either. Video
continues to spread across campuses, proving its value in every department.

This paper was presented at the Center for English Language Communication Symposium 27 May, 2013 in Singapore. The findings indicate that students perceived positive benefits of learning with mobile technology and iTunes University. However there is a need for further research regarding whether or not students would gain greater benefit if they choose the content themselves.
Teaching Programming to Non-Programmers at Undergraduate LevelDr. Amarjeet Singh
This paper focuses on solving the problems faced by
non-IT (Information Technology) background students at
undergraduate level in learning programming language who
are at the same time non-native English language speakers. In
this regard a step by step methodology has been proposed
here which try to take into account the difficulties faced by
this particular niche of programmers and counteract them
with possible solutions. Following this approach may help
lower the problems faced by the non-IT background students
to some extent and fulfill their aim in being professional or
conversational or end- user programmers according to their
career choices.

The case study discusses the potential of drone delivery and the challenges that need to be addressed before it becomes widespread.
Key takeaways:
Drone delivery is in its early stages: Amazon's trial in the UK demonstrates the potential for faster deliveries, but it's still limited by regulations and technology.
Regulations are a major hurdle: Safety concerns around drone collisions with airplanes and people have led to restrictions on flight height and location.
Other challenges exist: Who will use drone delivery the most? Is it cost-effective compared to traditional delivery trucks?
Discussion questions:
Managerial challenges: Integrating drones requires planning for new infrastructure, training staff, and navigating regulations. There are also marketing and recruitment considerations specific to this technology.
External forces vary by country: Regulations, consumer acceptance, and infrastructure all differ between countries.
Demographics matter: Younger generations might be more receptive to drone delivery, while older populations might have concerns.
Stakeholders for Amazon: Customers, regulators, aviation authorities, and competitors are all stakeholders. Regulators likely hold the greatest influence as they determine the feasibility of drone delivery.
