This document explores the issue of student reticence in speaking within Maldivian ESL classrooms, identifying factors contributing to this behavior and strategies both students and teachers use to address speaking anxiety. The research highlights that students often feel pressured and lack opportunities for speaking, leading to anxiety and silence during lessons, while teachers typically focus more on reading and writing. Recommendations include incorporating speaking assessments into exams to improve students' communicative competence.
