Reduction of earned revenues, charitable contributions and sponsorships (public
and private museums alike):
• Short/medium term: financial sustainability of museums (especially small) is at risk
• Medium/long term: shrinkage of research and cultural activities
Jobs in museums and around:
• Short term: reduced wages and lay offs (temporary staff; external contracts including
mediators, seasonal work, jobs related to exhibitions, publishing, events and other
commercial activities).
• Short/medium term: structural threat to the survival of companies and freelancers part
of museums ecosystem which will impact on other cultural and creative sectors which
rely on these professionals for creative contents
Museums & local development:
• Short-term: abrupt withdrawal from local development projects
• Medium term: reduced capacities to contribute to local development projects

6. Emerging innovations/game-changers
for the future

#myhomeismymuseum (Stuttgart).
• Increased recognition of the role of culture plays for our society and in
particular to people’s well-being and mental health
• Increased attention to the link between culture and education
• Increased levels of trust in cultural institutions that can be capitalised on in
the recovery
• Digital becomes more important: stronger cross-fertilization with emerging
technologies such as virtual and augmented realities; stronger cross-overs
between culture and education, culture and well-being.

7. Policies to support the sector
Short/ medium term:
• Direct aid, subsidies, emergency financial assistance (to smaller museums) and
emergency funds for maintenance of museum facilities
• Tax and rent reliefs
• Income support measures including freelance professionals
• Inclusion of small non-profit businesses, including many museums, in support
programmes designed to help small businesses continue paying employees
• Measures to support cultural micro-firms (tax reliefs, access to credits)
• Tax incentives for donations
Medium/ long term:
• Stronger partnerships between local governments and museums for the
recovery
