This document discusses coronaviruses and COVID-19. It provides background on coronaviruses, describing them as enveloped viruses with positive-sense RNA genomes that infect humans and other animals. It discusses SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV as previous zoonotic coronaviruses. It then focuses on COVID-19, describing its emergence in China in 2019 and its symptoms, transmission, diagnosis and treatment. Tables provide data on severity of COVID-19 cases and the geographical spread of the disease.
This article provides a review of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It discusses the epidemiology, causes, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and prevention/control of COVID-19. Key points include that COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild to severe/fatal, with the elderly and those with preexisting conditions most at risk of complications. Diagnosis is via PCR tests of respiratory samples. While there are no approved vaccines or treatments yet, prevention focuses on avoiding exposure, hand washing, and other hygiene/social distancing practices. The aim is to increase awareness and understanding of this ongoing public health threat.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Common symptoms include fever, tiredness, and dry cough, with most patients recovering without special treatment. However, older individuals and those with pre-existing medical conditions are more vulnerable to severe illness. While bats were believed to be the original host, the exact origin of SARS-CoV-2 is still unclear. The initial epicenter was Wuhan, China, though person-to-person spread has led to a global situation with rising case numbers and death tolls that vary by age. Preventive measures center around social distancing, quarantines, and maintaining good hygiene.
Corona virus was first identified as the cause of the common cold in 1960. In one study carried out in Canada in 2001, more than 510 patients presented with flu-like symptoms. Virological analyses showed that 3.7% of these cases were positive for the HCoV-NL63 strain by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Until 2002, the corona virus was considered a relatively simple, nonfatal virus; however, an outbreak in 2002–2003 in the Guangdong province in China, which resulted in spread to many other countries, encompassing Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong Singapore, and the United States of America, causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and high mortality rates in over 1000 -1100 patients.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a newly discovered coronavirus and spreads mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Most people infected experience mild symptoms, but older people and those with underlying conditions are more likely to develop serious illness. The first known human coronavirus was identified in 1965. More recently, SARS emerged in China in 2002 and MERS started in Saudi Arabia in 2012. To prevent the spread of coronavirus, it is important to wash hands regularly, cough into the elbow, avoid touching the face, and practice social distancing.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment.
Elderly people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.
WHO clearly stated that the COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Corona virus was first identified as a cause of the common cold in 1960. Until 2002, the virus was considered a relatively simple, nonfatal virus.Over the last three decades there have been three attacks of three different coronaviruses, SARS-CoV, MERS CoV and the recent one 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
The document summarizes information from the CDC about the COVID-19 outbreak:
- The virus was first detected in China and has spread internationally, with the disease being named COVID-19. Both the WHO and HHS Secretary have declared public health emergencies.
- The virus spreads mainly between people within 6 feet through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
- Older people and those with preexisting health conditions are at higher risk of severe illness. Schools and childcare facilities are encouraged to take preventative measures to slow the spread.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
A novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was identified in 2019 in Wuhan, China. This is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans.

COVID-19 is a respiratory infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019. It causes symptoms like fever, cough, shortness of breath that appear 2-14 days after exposure. The virus spreads mainly through respiratory droplets from infected individuals coughing and sneezing, and possibly through touching contaminated surfaces. To prevent infection, one should wash hands frequently, avoid touching the face, disinfect surfaces, maintain distance from those coughing/sneezing, and cough/sneeze into the elbow. Droplets from coughs or sneezes can transfer from surfaces to hands and then to the face, causing infection if introduced to mucous membranes.

Coronavirus (COVID 19) and Human reproduction Presently, very much less is understood about the impact of COVID-19 on human replicas and its next impact on the ensuing pregnancy.
The document lists the 10 deadliest viruses in the world and provides details about each. It discusses how influenza, rabies, dengue virus, Marburg virus, Ebola virus, smallpox, HIV, hantavirus, SARS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 are among the deadliest viruses and have killed millions of people worldwide through history or in recent outbreaks. Mortality rates for these viruses range from under 10% to over 80% depending on the virus and outbreak. Many of these viruses originated in animals and jumped to humans, triggering large epidemics and pandemics.
The document provides information on COVID-19 and ways to protect against it. It discusses what coronaviruses are, details of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, how the disease spreads via respiratory droplets, those most at risk like the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, common symptoms like fever and cough, and the importance of practices like hand washing, social distancing, and masks to prevent transmission. It aims to fight misinformation by providing an authentic resource on understanding the pandemic and staying safe.
Travel-related infectious diseases on the rise
International travel has an important role in the transmission of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases across geographical areas.
Since 1980, the world has been threatened by different waves of emerging disease epidemics.
In the twenty-first century, these diseases have become an increasing global concern because of their health and economic impacts in both developed and resource-constrained countries.
It is difficult to stop the occurrence of new pathogens in the future due to the interconnection among humans, animals, and the environment.
As many as 43%–79% of travelers to low- and middle-income countries become ill with a travel-related health problem.
Although most of these illnesses are mild, some travelers become sick enough to seek care from a health care provider.
After months of deliberation, the World Health Organization has
declared COVID-19 a pandemic. As it seemed clear for quite some time, the virus will likely spread to most (if not all) countries on the globe. However, actions can still limit its impact.

How Is Coronavirus Spread? Here's What You Should (and Shouldn't)
Worry About
by Jessica Migala
With more than 46,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States (and more
than 392,000 cases worldwide), it's clear that the novel coronavirus (aka COVID-19), along with
the anxiety surrounding it, isn't going anywhere soon.
Because the virus is so new (it's technically called SARS-CoV-2, FYI), lots of the fear
surrounding COVID-19 stems from how little we know about it. Luckily, experts do know some
pretty important things about the virus' transmission, or how the coronavirus does—and
doesn't—spread.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is mainly
spread from person-to-person, usually via close contact (within six feet). It can spread through
physical contact like handshaking if someone's hands are contaminated with the virus. And it can
also spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes
(again, that's why the six-feet rule is handy: those droplets can travel that far, and land on another
person's mouth or nose, and can even be inhaled).
The virus may also spread from person-to-person through surfaces that have been
touched by those infected. "A sneezing or coughing person will cover their mouth, get it all over
their hand, and then touch something that you then touch," Robert Murphy, MD, an infectious
disease expert at Northwestern University, tells health.com. “The virus can then gain entry into
your body when you touch your own face,” he adds. That’s precisely why experts can only
preach basic disease-prevention measures, like washing hands correctly (20 seconds with soap
and water) and regularly, wiping down common surfaces, and staying away from sick people.
Lastly, another possible way coronavirus can spread between people is via fecal
transmission. According to recent research from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (CCDC), those with confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (aka, COVID-19) have
live virus in stool specimens, meaning there's a possible fecal-oral route for the virus, as well.
Unfortunately, the only way to truly know if someone has COVID-19 is to test them;
that's because the symptoms of the illness look extremely similar to that of the common cold or
flu: cough, fever, and body aches. It's also important to know that.
The document provides background information on coronaviruses and the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak that began in Wuhan, China in late 2019. It discusses coronaviruses in general, describing their structure and how some have evolved to infect humans. It then summarizes details about the initial 2019-nCoV outbreak cases linked to a seafood market, the virus's origins in bats and possible intermediate hosts, its spread between humans, and global responses to the outbreak.
The Coronavirus Disease – 2019 (COVID-19) is officially now a pandemic and not just a public health emergency of international concern as previously labelled. Worldwide, the new coronavirus has infected more than 4.9 million people and leaving more than 300,000 people dead in 188 countries. As countries of the world get locked down in an effort to contain the widespread of the virus, experts are concern about the global impacts of the pandemic on individuals, countries and the world at large. Millions of people are currently under quarantine across the globe. Many countries have responded by proclaiming a public health emergency, closed their borders and restrict incoming flights from high risk countries. This has grossly affected the travel plan of many. Several international programs, conferences, workshops and sporting activities are either postponed or cancelled. As the number of confirmed cases continues to escalate across the globe, hospitals seems to be running out of medical supplies, hospital spaces and personnel. Health workers are being overwhelmed by the numbers of people requesting for testing and treatment. Many of such health workers have been infected with the coronavirus and even lost their lives since the fight against COVID-19 started. Public health experts are also concerned about the huge medical wastes coming from the hospitals at this time and the adverse effects associated with improper management of such medical wastes, both at the hospital and community levels. The pandemic has also impacted negatively on the global economy. There have been serious crises in the stock market, with gross fall in the price of crude oil resulting in inflation and economic hardship among the populace. Many are currently out of job and as a result, the level of crime, protest and violence have continued to escalate in different parts of the world. The deaths of loved ones due to the coronavirus has left many emotionally traumatized. Nigeria, like other African countries is not spared of the ravaging effects of the pandemic, even as the government take strict measures to contain the virus. No doubt, this is very challenging, but the country is capable of surmounting the virus with the needed help from her international partners and cooperation from the citizenry. But if we as a people, remain complacent and continue with business as usual, without taking measures to flatten the curve, the disease will escalate too quickly beyond our capacity to handle and our health system will be overwhelmed and may collapse eventually. We cannot therefore afford to be complacent in our response to containing the pandemic.
The document discusses facts and opinions about the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides details about the virus such as it being derived from bats, how it spreads mainly through droplets from coughs or sneezes, and its global impact with over 7 million confirmed cases. The document also discusses the virus's symptoms and how they develop over time, from initial fever to potential respiratory distress. It emphasizes the importance of following government health protocols to prevent transmission and protect lives.
Corona viruses are a group of RNA viruses. In late December 2019, Patients with pneumonia with unknown etiology was get admitted in health care facilities in Wuhan, China, and resulted in a pandemic disease which affected more than 200 countries and responsible for 182,989 deaths world wide. The disease is officially named as Coronavirus Disease 2019 COVID 19, by WHO on February 11, 2020 . COVID 19 is a potential zoonotic disease with low to moderate estimated 2 -5 mortality rate. Currently, there is no definite treatment for COVID 19 although some trials are under investigation. Hence, appropriate use of PPE, regular hand hygiene, Respiratory and cough etiquettes, social distancing are some key elements to prevent the spread of disease. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has taken the world by storm. COVID-19 is a member of the coronavirus family, which has never been detected in humans before. There are seven known strains of coronavirus (CoV). Coronaviruses are derived from a variety of animals. The virus has many similarities to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The viruses can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe health complications.
Clinical Features and general Symptoms of COVID-19 Illness and Influenza: Dif...suppubs1pubs1
The document summarizes the clinical features and symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza. While the viruses have similarities, there are differentiating factors. COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 and has an incubation period of up to 14 days, with symptoms like fever, dry cough, and loss of taste and smell. Influenza is caused by influenza viruses and has a shorter incubation period of 5 days, with symptoms like fever, fatigue, and dry cough but no loss of taste or smell. Pneumonia is a common complication of both but presents differently based on the causing virus. Laboratory tests are needed to definitively diagnose the infection.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
Most people who fall sick with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover without special treatment.
The document discusses COVID-19 and provides definitions of related terms. It explains that COVID-19 is caused by a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that likely originated in bats and pangolins. Since being identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019, the outbreak has spread rapidly worldwide and is now classified as a pandemic by the WHO. Participants will learn about the differences between epidemics and pandemics, the transmission and challenges of COVID-19, and recommendations for protecting oneself and dental practice regulations during the pandemic.
The document discusses the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). It begins with an introduction to coronaviruses in general, then discusses the discovery of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China in late 2019. It describes the symptoms of COVID-19, which can range from mild to severe and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. It explains there are currently no vaccines or antiviral treatments available. The document concludes there is a need for further research to develop targeted antiviral drugs and a vaccine for COVID-19.

Countries around the world are scrambling to halt the spread of the coronavirus
pandemic.
As of April 8, more than 83,000 people worldwide have died of COVID-19, the highly
infectious respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus. The number of people who
have tested positive for COVID-19 has exceeded 1.4 million, according to data compiled
by Johns Hopkins University.

What is a coronavirus?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), coronaviruses are a family of
viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such
as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome
(MERS).
Anyone can publish on Medium per our Policies, but we don’t fact-check every story. For
more info about the coronavirus, see cdc.gov.
2. These viruses were originally transmitted from animals to people. SARS, for instance,
was transmitted from civet cats to humans while MERS moved to humans from a type of
camel.
Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected
humans.
The name coronavirus comes from the Latin word corona, meaning crown or halo.
Under an electron microscope, the looks like it are surrounded by a solar corona.
The novel coronavirus, identi ed by Chinese authorities on January 7 and since named
SARS -CoV- 2, is a new strain that had not been previously identi ed in humans. Little is
known about it, although human-to-human transmission has been con rmed.

What are the symptoms?
According to the WHO, signs of infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and
breathing di culties.
In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia, multiple organ failure, and even death.
Current estimates of the incubation period — the time between infection and the onset
of symptoms — ranging from one to 14 days. Most infected people show symptoms
within ve to six days.
However, infected patients can also be asymptomatic, meaning they do not display any
symptoms despite having the virus in their systems.

How deadly is it?
The number of fatalities from the new coronavirus has overwhelmingly surpassed the
toll of the 2002–2003 SARS outbreak, which also originated in China.SARS killed about
9 percent of those it infected — nearly 800 people worldwide and more than 300 in
China alone. MERS, which did not spread as widely, was more deadly, killing one-third
of those infected.
While the new coronavirus is more widespread than SARS in terms of case numbers, the
mortality rate remains considerably lower at approximately 3.4 percent, according to
the WHO.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older people are at
higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 which may result in increased stress during
a crisis.
People who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or
diabetes also seem to be at high risk for developing more serious complications from
COVID-19 illness.

Where have cases been reported?
Since March 16, more cases were registered outside mainland China than inside,
marking a new milestone in the spread of the global pandemic.
The virus has spread from China all around the world, prompting the WHO to label the
COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic.
Human-to-human transmissions became evident after cases were recorded with no
apparent link to China.
Read about which countries have con rmed cases here.
What is being done to stop it from spreading?
Scientists around the globe are racing to develop a vaccine but have warned it is not
likely one will be available for mass distribution before 2021.
Meanwhile, a growing number of countries have introduced a series of sweeping
measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus, including nationwide lockdowns, bans
on gatherings, closure of schools, restaurants, bars, and sports clubs, as well as issuing
mandatory work-from-home decrees.
International airlines have canceled ights the world over. Some countries have banned
non-citizens from entering their territories, and several more have evacuated their
citizens from abroad.

5. Where did the virus originate?
Chinese health authorities are still trying to determine the origin of the virus, which
they say likely came from a seafood market in Wuhan, China where wildlife was also
traded illegally.
On February 7, Chinese researchers said the virus could have spread from an infected
animal species to humans through illegally-tra cked pangolins, which are prized in
Asia for food and medicine.
Scientists have pointed to either bats or snakes as possible sources of the virus.
Is this a global emergency?
Yes, this outbreak is a global health emergency, the WHO said on January 30, raising
the alarm further on March 11 when it declared the crisis a pandemic.
The international health alert is a call to countries around the world to coordinate their
response under the guidance of the WHO.
There have been ve global health emergencies since 2005 when the declaration was
formalized: swine u in 2009, polio in 2014, Ebola in 2014, Zika in 2016 and Ebola

Are smokers more likely to be at risk from coronavirus?
Smoking can make people more susceptible to serious complications from a coronavirus
infection, the European Union agency for disease control said.
In its updated assessment of the risks caused by the coronavirus, the European Centre
for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) included smokers among those potentially
most vulnerable to COVID-19.
Smokers have also appeared to be more susceptible to breathing complications caused
by the disease, and the ECDC said it was advisable to identify them as a potentially
vulnerable group, con rming an earlier assessment.
The agency cited a study by Chinese doctors which on a sample of 99 patients a ected
by the coronavirus found that acute smokers were more at risk of dying than elderly
7. people.
The ECDC report also said smoking was associated with heightened activity in the lungs
of an enzyme, ACE2, that could make patients more vulnerable to COVID-19, citing a
study conducted by Guoshuai Cai, from the University of South Carolina.
The activity of ACE2, or angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, also increases with age and
with some kinds of hypertension treatment — both risk factors — the ECDC said.
