Copyright law has evolved over time to protect more than just books, and now also protects maps, performances, art, music and software. The first copyright statute arose in 1709-1710. Copyright gives the author rights to copy, distribute and modify their work, but does not protect ideas or thoughts. Copyright protection is limited to a certain period of time before works enter the public domain. Different types of works like technology and literature may have different copyright rules and protections. The concept of copyright originated from European countries granting printers rights to publish certain works for a limited time in order to control printing and prevent easy copying.
