Headline
• Headlines are telegraphic or short cut, basically
because space on newspapers is highly considered
Functions
• Catches reader’s attention
• Tells gist of the story
• Shows story’s importance compared to others on the
page or spread
Example 1:
60 mentors and students participated
in the writing workshop
Headline:
60 mentors, studes attend writing workshop
Note: and is substituted by a comma.
Example 2:
“Feature writers have rich vocabulary,” says Advento
Headline:
Feature writers have rich vocabulary — Advento
Note: “says” is substituted by a dash, and the quotation
marks were omitted
Shorter words are preferred
Example 3:
60 mentors and students participated
Headline
60 mentors, studes attend
Note: “Participated” and “students” were substituted by shorter
words “attend” and “studes”, respectively.
Guidelines for Writing headlines
1. The head should tell the gist of the story
simply and accurately.
2. It should contain a verb, but it showed not start
with a verb.
3. Be in the active voice.
4. Be in the present, the historical present or the
future tense.
5. Avoid the use of articles to begin a headline.
6. Use no abbreviations except those generally
known ones and acronyms.
7. The first line of two-line or three-line headline
should not end with a preposition, conjunction,
articles or any form of the verb to be, unless
the preposition goes with the verb, as in the
word call up.
Guidelines for Writing headlines
8. Be specific. Avoid generalities.
Wrong: Student wins contest
Right: Baquiran wins nat’l essay writing tilt
9. Avoid label head
Wrong: Auctioned
Right: Imelda jewelry auctioned
10. Do not editorialize your headline.
Wrong: Chronicles shows great performance in DSPC
Right: Chronicles wins 6 out of 7 in DSPC writing contest
11. Do not use the same word twice in the headline or kicker.
Ex:
Gun haul
Cagayan cops seize 24 guns
from suspected bandits
12. Never use the word “may”. It denotes the uncertain
element of the story.
13. To use direct quotation as head, use any of the following
forms instead of the traditional quotation marks:
a. Using the dash instead of the quotation mark.
Ex: Truth commission repugnant-Miriam
b. Using the colon
Ex: Sto Tomas: Brain drain just a prescription
c. Using narrative form
Ex: Garci is back, says wife
• 14. Do not be negative.
Wrong: Afi festival won’t be held
Right: Afi festival cancelled
• 15. The first letter of the word and proper nouns are
generally capitalized.
• 16. Avoid awkward verbal breaks.
Wrong: CNHS debaters to
Join nat’l tilt in Manila
Right: CNHS debaters
to join nat’l tilt in Manila
• 17. Mention only the name of person, who is prominent.
Wrong: Santos wins P30M lotto jackpot
Right: Veggie vendor wins P30M lotto jackpot
• 18. Use M for million and B for billion.
Ex: Philhealth lost P520M to fraudulent claims, says chief
• 19. Use comma instead of and.
Ex: PRRD, Trump skip West Phil. Sea issue in China meet
• 20. Separate double headline by a semicolon.
Ex: Bomb explodes at Zamboanga market;
13 killed, 53 hurt
• 21. Do not end the headline by a period.
• 22. Use the infinitive for future events.

Wrong: CNHS celebrates Buwan
ng Wika with beauty tilt
Right: CNHS holds Buwan ng Wika
with beauty contest
