Copper belongs to the noble metals (a metal that resists corrosion and oxidation
when exposed to air). These stand in the row after hydrogen and are not affected by non-
oxidizing acids, which is why it is not dissolved by hydrochloric acid.Means Cu++ + 2e- = Cu Eº
= 0.34 volt H+ + e- + 1/2H2 = 0 V So from Eo value we can see Cu can't displace H from Hcl .
However nitric acid is a strong oxidizing acid and therefore oxidises copper. Nitric acid will
oxidise both zinc and copper. Where in reaction with Hcl, Zn will displace H from Hcl because
of negative electrode potential

Copper belongs to the noble metals (a metal that .pdf

  • 1. Copper belongs to the noble metals (a metal that resists corrosion and oxidation when exposed to air). These stand in the row after hydrogen and are not affected by non- oxidizing acids, which is why it is not dissolved by hydrochloric acid.Means Cu++ + 2e- = Cu Eº = 0.34 volt H+ + e- + 1/2H2 = 0 V So from Eo value we can see Cu can't displace H from Hcl . However nitric acid is a strong oxidizing acid and therefore oxidises copper. Nitric acid will oxidise both zinc and copper. Where in reaction with Hcl, Zn will displace H from Hcl because of negative electrode potential Solution Copper belongs to the noble metals (a metal that resists corrosion and oxidation when exposed to air).
