Jenkins and Chef: Infrastructure CI and Automated DeploymentDan Stine
This presentation discusses two key components of our deployment pipeline: Continuous integration of Chef code and automated deployment of Java applications. CI jobs for Chef code run static analysis and then provision, configure and test EC2 instances. Release jobs publish new cookbook versions to the Chef server. Deployment jobs identify target EC2 and VMware nodes and orchestrate Chef client runs. The flexibility of Jenkins is essential to our overall delivery architecture.

Continuous Delivery with Jenkins and Wildfly (2014)Tracy Kennedy
A presentation on a continuous delivery pipeline that leverages Jenkins Enterprise, Jenkins Operations Center, Nexus, HAProxy, and Wildfly. Pipeline components run in Docker containers along with SkyDock/SkyDNS for service discovery and NSEnter for command-line access to containers.
Linux containers and Docker specifically have revolutionized the way applications are run at scale, but testing can greatly benefit from those technologies too.Containers allow to run tests in isolation with a minimum performance penalty, increased speed with respect to virtual machine based tests and easier configuration and less complexity for integration testing. Testing with containers allows running tests in a new, clean environment for each execution, minimizing false positives and environment corruption. At the same time it allows reusing container clusters to run development, testing and production workloads. You will learn to effectively use Jenkins with Docker and Kubernetes, a multi host Docker clustering technology, to run your Jenkins jobs in isolated containers for each execution at scale.

DCEU 18: App-in-a-Box with Docker Application PackagesDocker, Inc.
Michael Irwin - Application Architect, Virginia Tech
Docker Application Packages is an experimental tool that makes it easy to share multi-service applications. Create a Compose file, package it in an image, and voilà! You now have an "app-in-a-box"! Not convinced yet? No worries! It took a while for me to be convinced too! In this session, we'll start off by diving into how Docker Application Packages actually works, which will help us understand the use cases. We'll see how dev environments can hook in to this app-in-a-box by replacing the service being worked on with a dev container. Then we'll move on to see how end-to-end functional tests are much easier to run. And, finally, we'll see how to maintain an "app-in-a-box" with the latest versions of each component in a CI/CD pipeline, allowing for a unique app-in-a-box for each feature branch under development. Lots of good material! And lots of live demos!

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Enhancing Research Orchestration Capabilities at ORNL.pdfGlobus

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
