Controlled Assessment
• This task is divided into two parts:
• A01 - Industry Research worth 10 marks.
• A02 - Micro Analysis of a five minute scene worth 20 marks.

• Both of these tasks must be completed for the same film that
is selected. You can NOT analyse a superhero movie as this is
the genre selected for the unseen extract in the exam.
A01 – Industry Research
• You will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how
films communicate meanings, evoke responses and engage
audiences.

• The analysis must be between 350 – 500 words. The research
will be divided in to three areas that have criteria that’s should
be included for each:
A01 – Industry Research
• Production
What is the source material for the film, consider
franchises, adaptions of books and texts, could it have been made due to current
trends.
• Who financed the film and who made it? Consider the methods of acquiring
funding Hollywood differs from the UK, and the impact of the actors and crew on
assisting with acquiring the funding?
• Distribution
How is the film marketed and promoted, consider the
marketing campaign and the range of products that are created to assist with the
production of the film and raising awareness. What are these products?
• You should identify three examples of marketing or products that were used in
the promotion of your film
• Exhibition
What type of cinema your film was shown at and why?
• Consider the difference between cinemas and how they appeal to different
audiences?
• How long was the film shown for?
• What is the films classification?
• Who are the main audience for this film; justify your answer using the age
range, gender and socio-economic grouping.

A02 – Micro Analysis
• The micro analysis of a scene will be based upon a selected
five minute extract which you should state the start and finish
time of your scene. It can be no longer than five minutes and
should not be any shorter than three minutes.
• The anslysis should be between 500 – 750 words.

• To analyse the scene you will need to select TWO micro
elements of film language to analyse from the list below:

• Consider which of these may compliment each other.
Screening
• You should present your five minute clip.
• You should explain why you have chosen this scene, why is it a
good sample to analyse for the controlled assessment.
• Your justification of the scene should be between 2 – 3
minutes.
