Many virtual reality applications, such as training, urban design or gaming are based on a rich semantic description of the environment. This paper describes a new representation of semantic virtual worlds. Our model, called SVHsIEVs1 should provide a consistent representation of the following aspects: the simulated environment, its structure, and the knowledge items using ontology, interactions and tasks that virtual humans can perform in the environment. Our first main contribution is to show the influence of semantic virtual objects on the environment. Our second main contribution is to use these semantic informations to manage he tasks of each virtual object. We propose to define each task by a set of attributes and relationships, which determines the links between attributes in tasks, and links between other tasks. The architecture has been successfully tested in 3D dynamic environments for navigation in virtual urban environments.

The World Wide Web hosts vast repositories of information. The retrieval of required information from the Internet is a great challenge since computer applications understand only the structure and layout of web pages and they do not have access to their intended meaning. Semantic web is an effort to enhance the Internet, so that computers can process the information presented on WWW, interpret and communicate with it, to help humans find required essential knowledge. Application of Ontology is the predominant approach helping the evolution of the Semantic web. The aim of our work is to illustrate how Swoogle, a semantic search engine, helps make computer and WWW interoperable and more intelligent. In this paper, we discuss issues related to traditional and semantic web searching. We outline how an understanding of the semantics of the search terms can be used to provide better results. The experimental results establish that semantic search provides more focused results than the traditional search.

Coordination is a fundamental problem in the engineering of collective adaptive systems (CAS). Prominent approaches in this context promote adaptivity and collective behaviour by founding coordination on local, decentralised interaction. This is usually enabled through abstractions such as collective interfaces, neighbour-based interaction, and attribute- based communication. Application designers, then, use such coordination mechanisms to enact collective adaptive behaviour in order to solve specific problems or provide specific services while coping with dynamic environments. In this paper, we consider the other way round: we argue that a CAS model can be used to provide support for high-level coordination models, simplifying their implementation and transferring to them the self-* properties it emergently fosters. As a motivating example, we consider the idea of supporting tuple-based coordination by Linda primitives such that tuples and operations have a position and extension in space and time. Then, we adopt an aggregate perspective, by which space-time is logically represented by a mobile ad-hoc network of devices, and show that coordination primitives can be implemented as true collective adaptive pro- cesses. We describe this model and a prototype implementation in the ScaFi aggregate programming framework, which is rooted in the so-called computational field paradigm.

The paper proposes a core ontology of socio-cyberphysical systems for resource interoperability. The ontology comprises the main concepts and relationships which are identified as relevant to model such systems. The approach considers a socio-cyber-physical system comprising cyber space, physical space, and mental space. In the ontology, these spaces are represented by sets of resources. The ontology provides the resources with a common vocabulary to share information and services and therefore makes these resources interoperable. The core ontology is specialized for a socio-cyber-physical system embedded in robotics domain. Technology of online communities is proposed to be used for resource communication.

In the last decade, ontologies have played a key technology role for information sharing and agents interoperability in different application domains. In semantic web domain, ontologies are efficiently used toface the great challenge of representing the semantics of data, in order to bring the actual web to its full power and hence, achieve its objective. However, using ontologies as common and shared vocabularies requires a certain degree of interoperability between them. To confront this requirement, mapping ontologies is a solution that is not to be avoided. In deed, ontology mapping build a meta layer that allows different applications and information systems to access and share their informations, of course, after resolving the different forms of syntactic, semantic and lexical mismatches. In the contribution presented in this paper, we have integrated the semantic aspect based on an external lexical resource, wordNet, to design a new algorithm for fully automatic ontology mapping. This fully automatic character features the main difference of our contribution with regards to the most of the existing semi-automatic algorithms of ontology mapping, such as Chimaera, Prompt, Onion, Glue, etc. To better enhance the performances of our algorithm, the mapping discovery stage is based on the combination of two sub-modules. The former analysis the concept’s names and the later analysis their properties. Each one of these two sub-modules is it self based on the combination of lexical and semantic similarity measures.

SEMANTIC INTEGRATION FOR AUTOMATIC ONTOLOGY MAPPING

Patterns for the internet of things (IoT) which represent proven solutions used to solve design problems in the IoT are numerous. Similar to objectoriented design patterns, these IoT patterns contain multiple mutual heterogeneous relationships. However, these pattern relationships are hidden and virtually unidentified in most documents. In this paper, we use machine learning techniques to automatically mine knowledge graphs to map these relationships between several IoT patterns. The end result is a semantic knowledge graph database which outlines patterns as vertices and their relations as edges. We have identified four main relationships between the IoT patterns-a pattern is similar to another pattern if it addresses the same use case problem, a large-scale pattern uses a small- scale pattern in a lower level layer, a large pattern is composed of multiple smaller scale patterns underneath it, and patterns complement and combine with each other to resolve a given use case problem. Our results show some promising prospects towards the use of machine learning techniques to generate an automated repository to organise the IoT patterns, which are usually extracted at various levels of abstraction and granularity.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
